The same year which would see the release of Tsui Hark's much celebrated wuxia outing “Zu Warriors from the Magic Mountain” coincided with Chang Pang-yee's “The Night Orchid” arriving in cinemas. Even though the former is more known among cinephiles, both movies share a similar approach to their stories, a blend of martial arts and sword fighting, spiced with humour and fantasy. Also known as “Demon Fighter” or “Faster Blade Poisonous Darts”, the latter is an adaptation of Gu Long's novel of the same title, and typical for the kind of genre features the Taiwanese movie industry had been known for at the time. While Chang Peng-yi does not divert from the formula too much, perhaps “The Night Orchid” is worthwhile due to its visuals, which often border on being surreal or even going into horror territory.

The short life and brilliant career of Hong Kong singer, actress and social activist Anita Mui is celebrated in the middling biopic “Anita,” starring 31-year-old model Louise Wong in her film debut. This handsomely decorated and lushly filmed portrait nails the look and electric atmosphere in Hong Kong’s entertainment industry during its 1980s and ’90s heyday but only fitfully captures the sassy energy and fearless spirit that made Mui an adored figure who became known as the “Madonna of the East” and the “Daughter of Hong Kong.” Archival footage of Mui sprinkled throughout the film highlights the difference.
“Anita” joins a long list of productions about Mui (Miu Yim-fong), who died from cervical cancer in Dec. 2003 at the age of 40. Among these are the lengthy Chinese TV series “Anita Mui Fei” (2007) and “Dearest Anita” (2019), a fact-based drama inspired by members of the Mui Nation online fan club. This big-budget...

Stories can be familiar because we here them so often. Whilst we are forever seeking something new, we return to the familiar because we enjoy them. With “The Sword” we begin to see how a fresh set of film-makers were beginning to take the stories of their youth and reimagine them for newer audiences. The onset of the New Wave produced several directors that had a fantastic visual flair. While Patrick Tam might not always be remembered as much as a Tsui Hark, he remains an artist that is worthy of discovery.

Around this time, several productions emerged that seemed to mirror the success of “The Untouchables”. “First Shot” was to follow a few years after this, but in the same year came “The Big Heat” also produced by Tsui Hark and starring Waise Lee. All three are set in different periods, but feature a similar narrative around police corruption and a small team of straight cops that refused to succumb. The latter of the three is the finer piece of work but whilst this production is flawed it is not without merit. Kirk Wong is probably not talked about a lot in modern circles. Whilst he doesn’t have the visual flourish of a peak John Woo, or the intensity of a Ringo Lam, his work always has, for the most part, a polish that other contemporaries lack.

Within the career of renowned Hong Kong director Tsui Hark, 1983 was quite an exciting and busy year with all in all five projects which he worked on, two of which he directed. One of those films he eventually helmed as director was an adaptation of a popular xianxia novel titled “Legend of the Swordsmen of the Mountains of Shu” written by Huanzhulouzhu, whose works served as the foundation of many TV series and movies over the years. In the hands of Hark and his team the film, which was consequently titled “Zu Warriors of the Magic Mountain”, became a blend of wuxia and fantasy, while its use of effects and genre-bending nature was significant for filmmakers in finding an international audience.

Guest reviewer Lee Broughton returns with a Region B review of Tsui Hark’s mystical tale of derring-do in ancient China. Hark revived a once popular variant of the wuxia film form — the Chinese shenguai wuxia films from the late 1920s — which paired chivalric martial arts with more overtly mystical and mythological elements. The groundbreaking and stylishly executed result is said to have been John Carpenter’s chief inspiration when making Big Trouble in Little China.

“Zu Warriors from the Magic Mountain” is the first Hong Kong production to combine traditional Hk actions stunts with Western special effects. At the 3rd Hong Kong Film Awards ceremony, the film received five nominations.
Zu is a collective name of a mountain chain located somewhere in present-day Sichuan. Being a place of great military importance in ancient China, it was always a battleground between various warring factions. Nevertheless, it was also a place of great mystique due to numerous exotic peaks and old temples. An army deserter Dik Ming-kei (Yuen Biao) is accidentally attacked by vampires in a cave, but he is rescued by Master Ding Yan (Adam Cheng). Dik Ming-kei does not realise that he entered the underworld where good is in an eternal struggle against evil (controlled by the Blood Demon). Chung Mei (Sammo Hung) can hold the Blood Demon in captivity only for 49 days until the stars shift.

Our latest delve into martial arts cinema looks at the movie that inspired a John Carpenter favourite...
I've had a few comments here on my martial arts features asking "Where's the best place to start with martial arts films?" and I always find myself struggling to answer. The genre's so broad that it's hard to know what to recommend - different people will respond to different films, of course - and yet all this time, the perfect answer for Den Of Geek readers has been staring me in the face. If you've grown up on the geek diet of comic books, Star Wars, Lord Of The Rings, and the Diy SFX of Doctor Who, then the ideal martial arts starter movie for you is Zu: Warriors From The Magic Mountain (1983).
Zu was a significant film for the Hong Kong 'New Wave' movement that revolutionised the industry in the late 70s.

Made in 1988, Gunmen is one of the better gangster thrillers to come out of Hong Kong cinema in the 1980’s. Unfortunately, due to its availability, the film seems to have become largely forgotten, having disappeared in the crowd of other but not necessarily better Hong Kong gangster films of the time. Loosely based on the Brain De-Palma film The Untouchables (1987), the film stars Tony Leung Ka-fai as Ding Chun – Bee as a police officer in 1930’s Shanghai. He ends up on the case of the evil Haye, played by veteran actor Adam Cheng. Haye is an opium smuggler who also happens to have history with Ding, due to him torturing Ding and his friends during the war, when he was a Chinese...

When it comes to making features like this one, i love the idea of coming up with my own personal “100 Great Kung Fu Movies” of all time. It is tough choosing just 100 because you know there are many more great Kung Fu movies that are not on the list.
I have decided that to make the list, a movie must have a few hand to hand moments during fight scenes in the movies chosen. If for example its mainly sword play with one fight scene hand to hand it won’t make the list. Its old school “style” Kung Fu movies, not modern day settings.
I understand everyone will have their own personal favorites and some may not agree with my list and that’s fine because it’s nice to have different opinions on this genre which keeps it fresh and alive when having good debates.
Anyway, thank you...

Yuen Biao is one of the greatest screen performers of all time. He exploded onto our screens when Sammo Hung cast him in the amazing movie Knockabout and he has never looked back since.

I know there are still many Yuen Biao movies i could have named in this list, some i shall give a mention to at the bottom of the feature. So i hope you like the movies i have listed, if your new to Yuen Biao please check out some of these great flicks.

Saving General Yang

Hong Kong, 2013
*The following review is included in the Saturday Shaw Brothers column for its familiarity with several iconic Shaw epics. In fact it is actually another spin on a famous tale which Shaw Bros did tackle more than once in their history.
Ronny Yu’s journey as a director of feature films is eerily reminiscent of that experienced by John Woo. After early success in their native land, Yu and Woo, albeit at different times in their careers, ventured into the Hollywood system with mixed results at best. Action movie legend John Woo returned to Hong Kong and made an extraordinarily grand scale period piece in the mainland, Red Cliff. After Bride of Chucky and Freddy vs Jason, Yu headed back home and made one of Jet Li’s greatest films, Fearless. Now, after a seven-year wait,...

Journeyman director Ronny Yu (The Bride With White Hair, Fearless) delivers his first film in seven years, a solid if unremarkable retelling of the legendary Yang family, with sporadic visual flourishes but a lightweight script that fails to develop its large roster of characters.Despite being in love with Liulang (Wu Chun), sixth son of revered General Yang (Adam Cheng), the beautiful Princess Chai (Ady An) is betrothed to the son of a rival clan leader. Defying their father's orders, Liulang and his younger brother enter into a duel for the Princess' hand, inadvertently starting a war that will destroy the clan - and much of the kingdom along with it.General Yang is forced into battle, only to find himself cut off and surrounded by enemy...

Based on a classic series of beloved books and plays, Ronny Yu's Saving General Yang is an old school wartime epic, starring veteran Hong Kong actor Adam Cheng as the titular General, and Ekin Cheng as the elest of his seven loyal sons who swear to rescue him.It looks to be a good year for Yu, who was recently named as the first choice to direct Silver Vase, Iron Knight, The Weinstein Company's sequel to Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. Before all that, however, he must deliver this large scale period drama, which will most likely debut at next month's Hong Kong International Film Festival. A new trailer has surfaced out of Taiwan, and while it is unsubtitled, readers should have no difficulty in gleaning a...
