We are doing stuff that is indicative of fun,” Arooj Aftab says, quite seriously, in the flat staccato cadence of a test proctor.
The Pakistani-born, Berklee-trained, Brooklyn-based musician is talking about the singing on her new album, Night Reign, out May 31: the doubled vocals, the fresh harmonies, and especially the Auto-Tune that envelops her voice on lead single “Raat Ki Rani” and lends it that spectral pop aura. “Devdas,” the 1917 novella by Bengali author Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay, is one of the most commonly adapted stories in Indian cinema, and the tale's star-crossed romance and harsh critique of contemporary social mores have served as an influence for countless books and films. By the time then up-and-coming auteur Anurag Kashyap began conceiving his own take on “Devdas,” there had been at least fifteen movies directly or indirectly based on the novel, and the wildly popular Shah Rukh Khan version had recently been released in 2002. Not wanting to merely copy what came before, Kashyap decided to alter the story to reflect 21st-century social issues. This resulted in 2009's “Dev. D,” a bold adaptation that brought an arthouse style to general audiences.

Thiruvananthapuram, March 20 (Ians) Haryana’s Krishan Kumar stepped up the pace approaching the halfway mark and topped the men’s 800m in the Indian Grand Prix 1 at the Laxmibai National College of Physical Education here on Monday.

Vikram Vedha is a neo-noir action thriller directed by Pushkar-Gayathri. It is a remake of their own 2017 Tamil film by the same name. Vikram (Saif Ali Khan), who plays an honest police officer, seeks to apprehend Vedha (Hrithik Roshan), a dreaded gangster. “Vikram sir, aapki imandari se sab darte hain,” says Vedha in a dialogue that defines the characters of both Vikram and Vedha. Also, when Vedha surrenders, Vikram’s perception of good and evil begins to transpose when Vedha narrates stories to him. In fact, Vedha’s character is introduced with this dialogue, “Ek kahani sunaoon?” that sets the tone and an assurance of interesting chapters within the cop-gangster saga.
For starters, Vikam Vedha takes its basic premise from the mythological tale of Baital Pachisi aka Vikram-Betaal. Pushkar-Gayathri have picked up a gruelling premise and presented an interesting, tangled take on the same in the form of this cop-gangster face-off.

The U.S. Open is serving up some unexpected controversy. Earlier this week, sports commentators Mary Carillo and Chanda Rubin were providing insight into Serena Williams' match against Anett Kontaveit at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York. But in between the match, the cameras panned to the audience, where a few famous faces including Dionne Warwick were cheering on Serena. Things got complicated, however, when Mary referred to the legendary singer as Gladys Knight, who was also in attendance at the match. After the clip went viral on social media, Chanda explained what led to the misidentification. "Too bad I was initially looking at the court (where Auntie Gladys was in the stands) and...

Rubin claimed that she was “initially looking at the court” where she spotted Knight but, on her monitor, Warwick appeared instead.
In the viral clip, the women’s tennis star turned commentator points out a celebrity watching Serena Williams’ U.S. Open match against Anett Kontaveit from the stands on Wednesday evening.
“Oh, got some more stars!” Rubin says. “Gladys Knight,” her co-commentator interjects. “Gladys Knight!” Rubin repeats, seemingly offering her confirmation of the legendary singer.

AMC+’s Pantheon posits a near future in which not one but two different companies have cracked the code to “uploaded intelligence” (Ui) — distinct from AI in that these aren’t sentient consciousnesses born of computers but ones born as humans, and then digitized into the cloud at the end of their corporeal lives. The approaches taken by Logorhythms and Alliance differ in minor points but, strikingly, both have chosen to deploy this bleeding-edge science in the same way: by stripping the UIs of everything but their professional skills so that they can continue toiling without end in the afterlife, trapped in simulated offices with little memory of any existence beyond work.

For any adult still avoiding animation out of some stubborn refusal to understand its advantages as a both visual and storytelling medium, “Pantheon” makes its ambitions known from the get-go. After the eerie opening theme, scoring a fluorescent string of code smashing through a Greek statue, the show cuts to a high-school classroom, where a blunt voiceover lays the stakes bare. “Most of the girls in my class completely missed the moment when the world began to end,” teen outcast Maddie Kim (Katie Chang) tells us, the laptops blinking in unison as if in agreement. It’s a fittingly arresting start to this unnerving series, which taps an all-star cast to meld micro character work with macro questions about technology that may never have a satisfying answer.
Created by Dan Silverstein, and based on Ken Liu’s short stories, “Pantheon” layers conspiracies on top of the even more bitter truth at every turn.
