David Fincher is set to receive the Honorary Cesar Award, France’s highest film prize, during a ceremony which will take place Feb. 24 in Paris.
“Fincher is one of these rare filmmakers whose entire filmography has become cult over the years,” said the Cesar Academie in a release.
The French organization described Fincher as being a “visionary,” and said his movies were “hypnotic, intellectual and a source of inspiration for so many artists.”
“He shocked us with ‘Seven,’ kept us on the edge with ‘The Game,’ and struck us again with ‘Fight Club.’ With ‘Zodiac,’ ‘The Social Network,’ ‘Gone Girl,’ which is his biggest film success so far, or with ‘Mank’ (his Oscar-nominated Netflix drama about the screenwriter of ‘Citizen Kane’), he breaks the usual codes and garners raving international reviews,” said the Cesar Academie.

When France announced its shortlist of five films it will consider for its international Oscar submission this week, it was the start of a new chapter in the country’s efforts to win the prize. With the backlash still simmering from last year, when the subversive Palme d’Or winner “Titane” got the slot over emotional crowdpleaser “Happening,” the country has revised its approach in an attempt to support films more likely to secure the nomination.
This year’s selection has no obligatory entry from the official Cannes competition, which reflects the decision to remove festival head Thierry Fremaux from his influential spot on the committee after more than a decade of wielding influence there. Additionally, the one possible entry from a veteran French auteur was snubbed as Claire Denis’ romantic drama “Both Sides of the Blade,” which won Best Director at the Berlinale, did not make the cut.

France has overhauled the composition of its Oscar selection committee for the second time in three years.
Under the move, the heads of the Cannes Film Festival, export agency Unifrance and the César Academy will no longer have an automatic place on the committee.
The changes were announced in the French government’s daily bulletin as amendments to the regulatory code governing the country’s National Cinema Centre, which oversees the process each autumn.
A key change is that the slot automatically reserved for the head of the Cannes Film Festival has been replaced by “a qualified person in the cinema domain”.
This means that long-time Cannes delegate Thierry Frémaux who has been on the committee for more than a decade will likely not be involved in the selection for France’s 2023 Oscar submission.

France has overhauled the committee that selects what film the country submits to the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences for consideration for the best international feature film Oscar.
The move, unveiled by the French culture ministry on Wednesday, comes after an exceptionally long Oscar drought for France. Of the last 10 French international Oscar submissions, only four made the final shortlist, and just two – Deniz Gamze Ergüven’s Mustang in 2015 and Ladj Ly’s Les Misérables in 2019 –received Oscar nominations. Neither won. France has not won an Oscar for best international film since Régis Wargnier’s Indochine in 1993.
Critics say France’s selection committee regularly picks films that have premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and are favored by French industry insiders, but don’t have the best chances of finding favor with the U.S. Academy.

France has rejigged its Oscar submission committee, changing the group that decides which French film to submit for an international feature film Oscar.
As part of the overhaul, permanent members such as Cannes Film Festival’s general delegate Thierry Fremaux, Cesar Académie president Veronique Cayla and Unifrance boss Serge Toubiana will no longer be part of the committee.
The decree was issued by the newly elected Culture Minister Rima Abdul Malak and was published in the Journal Officiel on July 27.
The decision to reform France’s Oscar commission stems from criticism over the submission of films that had premiered at Cannes but didn’t necessarily have the best chances of going far in the Oscar race and ultimately earning a nomination.

France has been a supreme force in the Oscars’ international feature race for decades. This year, three acclaimed films from women directors — Céline Sciamma, Audrey Diwan and Julia Ducournau — are believed to be at the top of the list to represent the country for the upcoming 94th ceremony, set to take place on March 27. Though France is the most-nominated country in the history of the category, it hasn’t walked away with the prize in nearly 30 years. Can that change this year?
The French submission is decided annually by the National Cinema Center. The committee will hold its first meeting on Thursday to pre-select a shortlist of films, with the producers being “auditioned” by the committee on Oct. 12, before the final choice is made. Sciamma’s “Petite Maman,” Ducournau’s “Titane” and Diwan’s “Happening” are believed to be the favorites for consideration. “Happening” was just acquired by IFC Films...

France’s Oscar selection committee has chosen comedy/drama Two Of Us as its submission to the International Feature Film category at the 2021 Academy Awards. From director Filippo Meneghetti, the feature debut world premiered in the Discovery section of Toronto last year and was released in France in early 2020 via Sophie Dulac Distribution. Magnolia has U.S. rights and is releasing on February 5, 2021. Other festival play has included London, Macau and Palm Springs.
The story centers on retirees Nina (Barbara Sukowa) and Madeleine (Martine Chevallier) who have hidden their deep and passionate love for many decades. France’s Oscar selection committee today set a shortlist of five films that are in contention to be the country’s official submission to the International Feature Film category at the 2021 Academy Awards. Among the titles is Cuties, the Sundance award-winning debut drama from Maïmouna Doucouré that was well-received in France when it released this summer, but also was collaterally involved in an online backlash spurred by Netflix’s early marketing campaign.
Bac Films released Cuties in France while Netflix began rollout elsewhere on September 9. The story follows Amy, an 11-year-old girl who joins a group of dancers named “The Cuties” at school, and who rapidly grows aware of her burgeoning femininity — upsetting her mother and her values.
