“Oppenheimer,” “Poor Things,” “Saltburn,” and “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” have won the top feature-film awards at the 28th annual Art Directors Guild Excellence in Production Design Awards, which were held on Saturday in Hollywood.
“Oppenheimer” won for period film, “Poor Things” for fantasy, “Saltburn” for contemporary and “Spider-Man” for animated film.
“Poor Things” was considered a bit of a surprise winner given that “Barbie” was also nominated the category, and winners Shona Heath and James Price said in their acceptance speech that they were not expecting the win. The victory might put them closer to a victory at next month’s Oscars, where “Poor Things” has 11 nominations.
In the television categories, awards went to “Succession,” “The Great,” “Reservation Dogs,” “The Last of Us,” “Beef,” “Frasier,” “Squid Game: The Challenge,” and the 80th Golden Globe Awards ceremony. The first three titles were honored for their final seasons on TV.

When the Art Directors Guild holds its annual awards ceremony on Feb. 10, prizes will go to talented designers who created looks ranging from the nuclear-threatened whimsy of Wes Anderson’s “Asteroid City,” to the apocalyptic wasteland of “The Last of Us,” to the pink-hued fantasy of a doll choosing between plastic eternity and real-world life and death (she picked the latter).
See a common thread here? In addition to the gloom lurking behind these creations, other contenders provided backdrops for the implied genocide of “Killers of the Flower Moon,” the grief of a lauded composer stricken by the death of his wife in “Maestro,” the battlefield carnage of “Napoleon” and the development of an ultimate weapon that can extinguish humankind in “Oppenheimer.”
Want more? There’s AI armageddon in “The Creator” and “A Murder at the End of the World,” Frankenstein biology in “Poor Things” and a cool-headed professional assassin in “The Killer.

LONDON -- Broadcast industry watchdog Ofcom threw open the doors to further consolidation between terrestrial broadcasters here Thursday, at the same time maintaining that the BBC license fee should remain a vital part of the United Kingdom's broadcast policy. Announcing the recommendations as part of a consultation document on the future of Britain's public service broadcasters in the digital age, Ofcom chief executive Stephen Carter issued a stark warning that without radical changes, quality programming within the terrestrial sector "would not survive" the transition to an all-digital world.

CANNES -- The head of independent British super regulator Ofcom called on the U.K. government Wednesday to set a specific date for the switchover from analog to digital broadcasting. "Our assessment is that the market alone will deliver somewhere between 75%-85% penetration," Ofcom CEO Stephen Carter said in a speech to the Westminster Media Forum in London. "However, if unaided, it will then stall." Having a set date would be the "single biggest galvanizing factor" to reach switchover, Carter said. The government has only said its target for switchover is 2006-10.
LONDON -- Ofcom chief Stephen Carter said Tuesday that early findings of a precedent-setting survey of the British public indicate that soap operas and sports are as important a part of the BBC's schedule as news and documentaries. The early results of the survey of 6,000 people -- who are keeping television diaries on their TV habits and preferences over a three-month period -- were unveiled in a speech in Oxford by the U.K. super regulator CEO. "The 'water-cooler' national moments remain part of our social and cultural fabric," Carter said. "The results suggest that the vox pop is considerably less snooty than vox dei (voice of the great and good) about the social value of soaps."...

Carl Franklin is in discussions to direct Warner Bros. Pictures' legal thriller Emperor of Ocean Park, based on Stephen Carter's novel of the same name. Studio-based John Wells Prods. and Gaylord Films are producing. Negotiations are expected to begin this week. Emperor would be Franklin's fourth feature film based on a novel after previous efforts with High Crimes, One True Thing and Devil in a Blue Dress, the latter of which he also adapted for the big screen. Stephen Schiff (True Crime) adapted Emperor, which is about a black law professor who gets caught up in a deadly game while investigating the mysterious death of his father, a legendary conservative judge. John Wells and Hunt Lowry are producing the project. Kristin Harms and Stacy Cohen are executive producing. Warners exec Kevin McCormick is overseeing the project. Franklin, repped by WMA, recently wrapped shooting the MGM thriller Out of Time, starring Denzel Washington.

LONDON -- Stephen Carter, the incoming chief executive of the United Kingdom's Office of Communications (Ofcom), pledged Wednesday that the media super-regulator will act "quickly and effectively" to protect consumers and prevent companies from adopting dominant market positions. Carter, who was named Ofcom's CEO in January, will be responsible for overseeing competition issues across Britain's television, telecommunications, Internet and radio industries when the regulator becomes operational at the end of the year (HR 1/22). Ofcom's regulatory instincts are a key concern among Britain's media and telecom businesses, which will be united under a single regulator's umbrella for the first time when Ofcom officially opens its doors.
