Ferraro, who exec produces.
American Gladiators is considered one of the first reality competition series. It pitted a cast of amateur athletes against each other as well as the shows’ own gladiators across a range of challenges including a tough obstacle course.
The new series includes classic competitions such as Gauntlet, Hang Tough, and, of course The Eliminator.

The first series hosted by Bradley and Barney Walsh has seen 16 new superhuman Gladiators: Sabre, Legend, Nitro, Diamond, Phantom, Athena, Bionic, Fire, Giant, Dynamite, Viper, Electro, Apollo, Comet, Steel and Fury quickly become household names as viewers cheer on favorites as they compete against contenders in iconic events such as duel and powerball, culminating in the iconic eliminator.

"C'mon Dan, you know me, I'm not that kind of guy..." Definitely don't watch this short at work. The Flute is a hilariously uncomfortable horror short from filmmaker Nick Roney. It premiered a few months ago at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival in the Midnight Shorts section, and is now available to watch online. "After a harrowing break up, Dan moves in with his best buds for a change in tempo. Things take a dissonant turn when one of his new roommates steals a nude of his ex. While retrieving his precious keepsake, he uncovers a dark secret about his band of friends that will change his tune forever. And that's just the tip..." So gross. The film stars Dan Carr, Ed Leer, David Finch, and Maya Sommer. Yes, that's a prosthetic - sculpted by Chelsea Delfino. This is even funnier and more disgusting than expected - which means it's a must watch.

The two-part “30 for 30” documentary on the seminal 1990s competition show “American Gladiators” has now concluded, wrapping up an epic saga that cut right to the core of the American Dream.
The documentary dove deep into the largely unknown history of the show, which dominated the TV landscape in its initial run in syndication on US television and around the world. It revealed stories of love, lust, betrayal, friendship, injury, agony, and everything in between from the creators of the show and the Gladiators themselves.
So how did a nearly three-hour doc about a show famous for events like jousting with things that looked like huge cotton swabs and rolling around in giant steel balls called Atlaspheres come together? According to the doc’s director Ben Berman, he was skeptical when initially approached by Vice about the project but changed his mind once he learned more about the story.

Chicago – Groundbreaking filmmakers often start at the South by Southwest Festival. Influencers like the Duplass brothers, Chicago’s Joe Swanberg and Lena Dunham got their first prominent notices at the fest. In that spirit, the 2022 SXSW Grand Jury Awards were announced on March 15th.
The top film in Narrative Features was “I Love My Dad” by writer/director James Morosini, featuring Patton Oswalt and Morosini himself as father and son reconnecting under odd circumstances. The Documentary Feature awardee was “Master of Light” by Rosa Ruth Boesten, an unusual profile of painter George Anthony Morton, as he struggles to render his mother. And the Narrative Short deemed best is by writer/director Tang Yi, entitled “All the Crows in the World,” with its “inventive story and critiques of patriarchal culture.”
The following is the list of top honorees …

Back together in person after two years of going virtual during the pandemic, the Austin-based SXSW Film Festival has announced its juried prizes. As in previous editions, the awards show happened at the midpoint of the nine-day event, before SXSW’s music events suck much of the attention away from film screenings.
The top prize in narrative feature competition went to “I Love My Dad,” written and directed by James Morosini, who also stars as a younger version of himself in this uncomfortable retelling of how he was catfished by his father (played by Patton Oswalt).
“Morosini displays massive empathy as a filmmaker to get into the mind of the father he feels betrayed by, and also as an actor portraying the impact of that betrayal,” said the jury, who also gave special jury prizes to the cast and crew of “It Is in Us All” and Elizaveta Yankovskaya, star of the Russian film “Nika.

Exclusive: American Gladiators, the classic competition series that originally premiered in 1989, is taking another shot at the obstacle course.
Deadline understands that MGM has teamed with WWE for a reimagined version of the non-scripted series that will feature a slew of WWE wrestling superstars.
Mark Burnett and his team are currently pitching the rebooted series, which is based on the format created by Johnny Ferraro and Dan Carr, to broadcasters and platforms.
It seems like good timing for the Hollywood studio and Vince McMahon’s wrestling federation given the success of physical competition series in the non-scripted space from American Ninja Warrior to Floor Is Lava and Holey Moley, as well as the growing focus on WWE with Netflix’s interactive film Escape the Undertaker and a documentary series about McMahon from Bill Simmons as well as Blumhouse TV scripted series The United States of America Vs. Vince McMahon in the works.
