Deftones are one of the great rock bands to emerge in the 1990s. It’s hard to imagine the band going by any other name, as “Deftones” is strangely befitting of the act’s emotive, dynamic alt-metal sound.
However, at one point in the early days of the band, the young Sacramento outfit almost opted to change its name in a bid to score a record deal.
Ex-Roadrunner Records executive Monte Conner recently recounted the story in a since-deleted Facebook post [via The Prp]. It was Conner who almost signed the band and made them change their name “as a condition of the deal.”
“In the summer of 1993, I was sent a Deftones demo by their manager Dave Park,” wrote Conner. “He was based in Sacramento, where the band was from. I was instantly blown away; their music was like nothing I had ever heard before. While these days the band...

We toe the line sometimes here at JoBlo Horror Originals with what movies we discuss. Some things can qualify for multiple shows like a Black Sheep or a Deconstructing on the same movie. Sometimes there are enough behind the scenes shenanigans to give it a proper Wtf or maybe its adapted from a story. Not today, though. Today is something that reflects the true nature of this show. I know some viewers get bummed when they see some movies, even some of their favorite movies, get covered multiple times, so today’s hopefully different. Deftones‘ latest studio album, Ohms, dropped in 2020, but it appears the guys are well into the writing phase for their next LP. Speaking on the Gnostic Academy podcast, guitarist Stephen Carpenter said the band is working with producer Nick Raskulinecz on a new album, and they’re eyeing a 2024 release.
“Just in the last couple of months, really — two or three months; well, maybe a little longer now, really; February is when we started … to work on new material for a new record,” Carpenter told Gnostic Academy (as transcribed by Blabbermouth.net). “It’s going good now. It was a little slow at first, but it always is; dragging our feet ain’t nothing new. But we’ve got stuff up and going now, and we’re on a good little momentum at the moment. And we hope to have it all done and out by next spring [or] summer. There...

While movie remakes are popular across genres (Anyone remember the 2018 remake of Garry Marshall's "Overboard"?), the horror genre is especially susceptible. The genre is unique insofar as its scares endure more than most. Where comedies and action movies, for instance, are inextricably linked to their time of release, a scary movie is a scary movie. With a fresh coat of paint, what was new three decades ago can seem fresh again.
A curious contemporary trend has emerged in which relatively recent titles are remade just a few years after their original releases. Released just 14 years after the first "Cabin Fever," the remake used the exact script as the original. Recently, horror filmmaker Anthony Diblasi released "Malum" in select theaters. "Malum," a remake of Diblasi's 2014 indie "Last Shift," isn't quite a shot-for-shot remake so much as it is a reimagining. With more money and more experience, Diblasi revisits his demonic fable in a new context.

The late 80’s mostly pushed aside slashers for a return to potpourri poisons; creatures, monsters, zombies and mad scientists shared the spotlight in a bid to woo horror fans grown complacent with mere stabbing and stalking. Out of this stew grew The Kindred (1987), a mostly forgotten mélange that serves as the final (and best) calling card for the directing team of Stephen Carpenter and Jeffrey Obrow (The Power). Bring your slickers and keep the first five rows clear; things are going to get very messy.
Distributed by FM Entertainment in early January, The Kindred brought in $2.4 million before shuffling off to a home video release from Vestron; some critics praised the effects and that’s about it. But for horror fans who missed it the first go around (pick me!), it offers a fast paced ride through groovy practical effects and a typically, um, heightened performance from Rod Steiger.

NBC is going back to its Grimm past: The network is developing a spinoff of the series, which ran for six seasons.
The new project, from writer Melissa Glenn (Zoo, Leverage) and Grimm producers Universal TV and Hazy Mills, would be a continuation of Grimm's world. Building on the mythology of the original series, the spinoff will feature returning favorites along with new characters, new mysteries and new dangers.
Glenn and Hazy Mills principals Sean Hayes and Todd Milliner are executive producing. Jim Kouf and David Greenwalt, two of Grimm's three co-creators (along with Stephen Carpenter), will serve as consulting ...

All hail Film Ventures International. Long-time purveyors of cinematic sleaze and genre enchantment, they’ve produced or at least distributed some of my very favorite low budget wonders: Beyond the Door (1974), Grizzly (’76), The Incubus (1981), and Pieces (’82) are only some of their titles that have provided hours of entertainment, from the goofy to the sublime (which in their case, is often one and the same). One of their final releases, The Power (1984), is a good example of their often heady mix, and a solid springboard for directors Stephen Carpenter and Jeffrey Obrow on their way to their demented mutant mash The Kindred (’87).
Released in late January, The Power (Aka Evil Passage) didn’t do much business; playing in theatres for one weekend and bringing in just under a million dollars, head honcho Edward L. Montoro surely heading out the back door with a bagful of cash on his way to bankrupting the company.

April Fool’s, it was all a dream.Ok, not really, but kind of, on the Grimm (0.9/4) Season 6 ender and series finale last night. What's very real for NBC is that the Portland-set supernatural series from Stephen Carpenter, Jim Kouf and David Greenwalt was up 13% among adults 18-49 and 4% in viewers to an audience of 4.30 million to hit a season high in both categories. Matching its Season 6 premiere of January in the key demo, the 8 Pm Season 6 end of Grimm was also dead…...

Grimm will return for season 6, as NBC declares “absolute love” for the producers’ accomplishments so far…
The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Grimm will be returning for a sixth season later this year. NBC Entertainment’s president Jennifer Salke said this about Grimm’s season 6 renewal...
"We absolutely love what our producers and cast have accomplished over the past five seasons. They have created a whole new world of creatures and have a truly devoted fan base. We can’t wait to see what comes next."
On the producer side of things, David Greenwalt, Jim Kouf, Stephen Carpenter, Sean Hayes, Todd Milliner and Norberto Barb will all return for Grimm season 6.
Judging by previous form, we’d expect Grimm to return to American screens in late October 2016, and to run until May 2017. By all accounts, the show will remain in its Friday night slot on NBC.

A look at the pre-Grimm work of co-creators David Greenwalt and Jim Kouf, a screenwriting partnership that’s lasted over thirty years…
A poker table in the late seventies, a bathroom in the mid-noughties… television shows have many birthplaces. Had screenwriters David Greenwalt and Jim Kouf not been introduced at a card game over thirty years ago, and had producer Todd Milliner not taken a 2006 shower in which he pondered what existing stories were in need of a modern update for TV, then Grimm might never have existed.
First, that poker game. Greenwalt and Kouf’s friendship began a couple of years before their first official screenwriting credit on 1982’s horror spoof Wacko, a job for which the pair were paid the princely sum of fifteen thousand dollars…

Exclusive: Grimm co-creators David Greenwalt and Jim Kouf have signed a new overall deal with Universal TV. Under the pact, the writing partners will continue as executive producers on the NBC drama, produced by Universal TV and Sean Hayes and Todd Milliner’s Hazy Mills. Grimm, which Greenwalt and Kouf co-created with Stephen Carpenter, was recently picked up for a third season with an early renewal. Its most recent second season (6.9 million viewers, 2.4 in 18-49 in Live+7) was up 14% in 18-49 and 12% in total viewers vs. Season 1. Greenwalt and Kouf exec produce the series with Hayes,...

Deftones bassist Chi Cheng has died. He was 42 and had been in a semi-conscious state since a 2008 car accident. Cheng co-founded the band with Chino Moreno, Stephen Carpenter, and Abe Cunningham in the late 1980s, performing on the band’s first five albums—three of which went platinum. He won a Grammy for Best Metal Performance with the group in 2001 for “Elite,” from the record White Pony. Deftones’ debut, 1995’s Adrenaline, wasn’t an initial success, but after the group did some extensive touring, it ultimately ended up spending 21 weeks on the Billboard Heatseekers chart ...

Plenty of “regular” shows are airing Halloween episodes this week, but we love that Our Shows are doing the same, especially when you consider that most regular episodes of Our Shows could be already be considered Halloween fare. Tonight, Grimm takes on Halloween with an episode that takes on a Latin American folk tale, La Llorona. We also learn that Wesen have a particular fondness for this holiday.
For the first time, NBC will be broadcasting tonight’s episode of Grimm in Spanish on Telemundo from 12-1 a.m. (Et) and English on mun2 at 1-2 a.m. (Et). These airings will follow the episode’s debut on NBC at 9/8c. More about that is in the press release, which follows these videos for your Halloween episode appetizers:

It’s a good news/bad news report. Unfortunately, the bad news is that NBC has now confirmed that Mockingbird Lane, the Bryan Fuller-written-and-produced re-imagining of The Munsters, will not be produced as a series. The somewhat good news is that we don’t lose everything; the one hour pilot has been refashioned into a special, to air the Friday before Halloween.
Mr. Fuller himself tweeted this upbeat interpretation:
#Mockingbirdlane Lives!
— Bryan Fuller (@BryanFuller) October 11, 2012
It is perhaps a remote possibility that, should the special do well, the series still could become a reality, but that is wild speculation. Here’s the press release, which also details the episode of Grimm that will follow the special, and which will feature a Latin American folk tale:

Los Angeles – Few rock bands that emerged during the '90s nu-metal phase still exist today and practically none have the amount of respect and admiration the Deftones receive from their musical peers. Countless bands cite the Sacramento-based group as a big influence on their music.
Saturday night (July 28) the Deftones stopped by the Troubadour in Los Angeles – an incredibly tiny, sweaty 300-capacity club – to perform their first proper show in nearly a year and their only solo date before heading out on a co-headlining amphitheater tour with System of a Down prior to their new, still-untitled album dropping on October 9. Soad drummer John Dolmayan and bassist Shavo Odadjian were both in attendance, enjoying the set alongside Dillinger Escape Plan frontman Greg Puciato.

Grimm
“Cat and Mouse” Air Date: 4/20/12
Along with Once Upon A Time, Grimm was heralded as another harbinger for the fairy tale boom to come. But, after breezing through the first seventeen episodes in short order to catch up, I found that that’s a misnomer. Yes, this series, set in Portland, Oregon (great to have a show set there besides Portlandia), revolves around Detective Nick Burkhardt (David Giuntoli), a descendant of the Grimm family (the brothers that wrote them books), who has the ability to see if someone is really a supernatural creature, or a Wesen (pronounced vessen), and is tasked with hunting them down. He is referred to as a “grimm” by these very creatures. But he doesn’t stumble upon any fairy tale characters or premises like in Ouat, he merely finds that there’s a lot of bad guys muddying up his case load that are really furry beasts.

Updated: I’ve learned that NBC has renewed freshman drama Grimm for a second season with a 22-episode order. That may be be the first of several early pickups of existing series at the network, though despite rumors nothing else is expected to come down today. A low-key addition to the schedule on Friday, Grimm has held its own, even growing when given a chance to run uninterrupted for several weeks. Created by David Greenwalt, Jim Kouf and Stephen Carpenter, Grimm stars David Giuntoli as a homicide detective who is also a Grimm, hunting supernatural baddies. It is produced by Universal TV and Sean Hayes and Todd Milliner’s Hazy Mills Prods. This is the first NBC series to get a renewal for next season. The move comes on the heels of CBS picking up 15 shows earlier this week. Related: It’s Almost March, Where Are The Renewals?...

NBC responded to the sudden surge of popularity for fairy tales — ABC’s hit drama Once Upon a Time, the dueling Snow White features Mirror Mirror and Snow White and the Huntsman — by renewing its own fairy tale-inspired police drama, the freshman series Grimm. Deadline confirmed today that NBC ordered a second season of 22 episodes from Gk Productions and Hazy Mills Productions. Stephen Carpenter, David Greenwalt and Jim Kouf created the series about a Portland, Oregon detective, Nick Burkhardt (David Giuntoli), who inherits the power to see supernatural creatures and accepts the task of maintaining the balance between the magical world and the human world.
