American director and administrator of Argentine birth. He studied law
and philosophy at La Plata and music at the University of Buenos Aires.
resident stage director for the New York City Opera. He has also
designed operas, and has worked in Europe, Australia and the Canary
Islands, where he established the Las Palmas Festival in 1975. He was
artistic director of the Cincinnati Opera Festival (1961-1965) and the
Cincinnati Opera (1962-1965) and in 1975 was appointed to the same
position at the San Diego Opera (general director from 1977). In July
1983 he became vice-president and general director of the Pittsburgh
Opera. Professor of acting and interpretation at the Academy of Vocal
Arts, Philadelphia (1962-1968). Founded and directed the American Opera
Center at the Juilliard School of Music and was appointed director of
opera studies and festival stage director at the Music Academy of the
West, Santa Barbara, in 1983. Also professor of acting, staging and
interpretation at the Graduate School of Music, Yale University.
