One of several writers (Frank Darabont, David Goyer, David Callahan and Drew Pearce are the others) to take a crack at Gareth Edwards' developing Godzilla, Max Borenstein is now turning his attention to Mona. The project, a sort of sci-fi cyber political thriller (and not to be confused with William Gibson's Mona Lisa Overdrive), is an adaptation of a novel by Dan Sehlberg, and it's coming together at studio New Regency. It isn't published yet, so details of the book are only so much hearsay and press release so far, but the thrust seems to be the pursuit of a Lebanese cyber-terrorist. University professor Samir Mustaf's daughter Mona is killed by an Israeli cluster bomb, and he develops a sophisticated computer virus - named after the deceased - to cripple Israel's financial system.Unfortunately for Mustaf, however, the virus gets into a Swedish academic's prototype system designed to...

Interesting news is being reported on the Godzilla front today. After hearing this weekend that Godzilla would begin production in March, it is now being reported that Frank Darabont has been hired to rewrite the script.
Frank Darabont’s name should be no stranger to horror fans, having spearheaded The Walking Dead TV series for the first season and half of season two. His last feature work was on The Mist back on 2007, and he’s been involved in genre projects for most of his professional career.
Unfortunately, there are no details on what changes Darabont was hired to make, but Legendary Pictures tapping into some of what made The Walking Dead great is not a bad route to go, considering they want this to be a more realistic take on Godzilla. Previously, the script had been worked on by Max Borenstein, David Callahan, and David Goyer.

During a recent interview, producer Dan Lin provided a brief update on the status of Gareth Edwards’s Godzilla, which is expected to begin filming early next year:
Via Collider: “We’re planning to film in March. We are in deep pre-production. Gareth [Edwards] has really mapped out his vision for the movie, you saw the teaser, but Gareth thanks to Thomas Tull’s help he took over a whole stage on the Warner Brothers lot and not only showed the teaser you saw, he had some models built of Godzilla, he had art decorated all over the soundstage, he had pre-vis of some of the big action sequences in the movie. So we’re in deep pre-production and Gareth’s vision of the movie is really exciting it’s a true re-boot of Godzilla. And you saw from the Comic-Con footage it is a grounded, realistic version of Godzilla. What...

Last time we saw Godzilla in a Hollywood movie was Roland Emmerich's oversized-but-underdeveloped 1998 effort, which triggered a whole series of Japanese productions aiming to offer a more accurate representation.
Now, Tinseltown is having another go at getting it right, with award-winning British filmmaker Gareth Edwards at the helm and a release date of May 16, 2014, marked on the calendar.
Variety recently reported that Legendary Pictures had brought in Iron Man 3 scribe Drew Pearce to polish the screenplay before casting gets under way.
David Callahan penned the original draft, with David Goyer and Max Borenstein also contributing to the script. Legendary has asked for Pearce to come in because it it wants to 'age up' the characters so they fit the actors they would like to target.
So what does Edwards - the man behind 2010's highly praised Monsters - say we can expect from the new Godzilla?

I wish I could have seen the Godzilla footage at Sdcc, as fleeting as it was. Apparently audiences responded to it very well and now Legendary Pictures is even more excited about the film.
Hey, with Monsters‘ Gareth Edwards directing, I’m pretty excited too.
Originally the script was written by David Callahan (The Expendables), then The Dark Knight Triology‘s David Goyer came in to take a crack at it.The last person to give it a polish was Max Borenstein (The Seventh Son).
Variety is now reporting that Legendary has asked Iron Man 3 writer Drew Pearce to give it a shot. Word is Legendary likes the script, but they want Pearce to “age up” some of the characters to better fit the actors they have in mind.
Sounds good. At least they’re not trying to fill the cast with youngsters like Taylor Lautner and Justin Beiber.

In an unprecedented reason for a rewrite, Warner Bros. has asked for the characters in Gareth Edwards’ upcoming Godzilla project to be made older. The script which was penned by David Callahan, David S. Goyer and Max Borenstein will be rewritten by Drew Pearce – Warner Bros’ wunderkind writer whose work includes the imminent Iron Man 3, Sherlock Holmes 3 and Surf Nazis Must Die 3 (all true except for the last one, but you never know). He’s to deliver the script in four weeks, prior to the start of casting.
Back in July a teaser reel was shown at Comic-Con, which according to spectators was set in the aftermath of a great battle with indications of the romping Godzilla proving loyal to its Japanese roots. We now know the script is not completed, which means that the initial reel could have just been a blueprint mock-up of what Edwards is...

Some quick news coming in for Legendary's new version of Godzilla... Variety reports that Legendary has brought in Iron Man 3 and Sherlock Holmes 3 scribe Drew Pearce to do a rewrite on Godzilla before it gets the casting process under way.
Godzilla has gained a lot of momentum after Legendary previewed a short test reel of the pic at the San Diego Comic-Con this past July, and sources tell the site that Pearce is now being brought in to do a four-week polish on the script.
Monsters director Gareth Edwards is still helming the film, with Roy Lee, Dan Lin, Jon Jashni, Thomas Tull and Brian Rogers producing.
Previous drafts were penned by David Callahan, who wrote the original draft, as well as David Goyer and Max Borenstein. Sources add that the polish isn’t being done because Legendary has any major problems with the script; it wants to...

Iron Man 3 screenwriter Drew Pearce has been hired by Legendary Pictures to rewrite and polish up the script for the Gareth Edwards-directed Godzilla. Once the script is complete the studio will start the casting process.
The studio showed off some epic test footage at Comic-Con this year that got fans amped up to see more! It was pretty incredible, and it would be great if they released it online soon so everyone could see it! I'm looking forward to seeing more of Edwards' vision for this classic movie monster.
The original draft of the script was written by David Callahan, then David Goyer and Max Borenstein took a crack at it. According to inside sources, "the polish isn't being done because Legendary has any major problems with the script; it wants to age up the characters so that they fit the prototype of the actors they would like to target.

"Iron Man 3" scribe Drew Pearce has been brought on to perform a four-week polish on the script for Gareth Edwards' "Godzilla" reboot at Legendary Pictures says Variety.
David Callahan, David Goyer and Max Borenstein all worked on previous drafts. Pearce has been brought on not to fix problems, but rather to "age up the characters" so that they fit the actors the studio has in mind for roles.
The film gained huge momentum after a test reel at San Diego Comic Con in July went over extremely well with the 6,500-strong crowd. Pearce is also at work on the script for a third "Sherlock Holmes" film.

Things have been moving forward quickly on Godzilla since the teaser trailer was shown earlier this year at the San Diego Comic-Con. The movie already has a release date of May 16th, 2014 and it has been announced that a new writer was brought on board to polish the existing script.
Iron Man 3 writer Drew Pearce will be working on the Godzilla script, according to Variety. They note that Legendary Pictures will begin the casting process shortly and that Pearce has been hired to do a four week polish. Previously, David Callahan had been hired to write the script, along with David Goyer and Max Borenstein, who were brought on board to do additional work on it.

If you thought the new Godzilla script would be locked and loaded after Legendary Pictures showed a sizzle reel at Comic-Con this year, you would be wrong. Director Gareth Edwards and his crew shot that as an independent test, and the script, which has already been through the paws of David Callahan, Max Borenstein and David Goyer, is getting a quick polish courtesy of Iron Man 3 co-writer Drew Pearce. The man who has been helping Shane Black put words in Tony Stark’s gob is very much in demand at the moment. He was hired by Warners to work on the script for a third Sherlock Holmes adventure (spurred, we have no doubt by his working relationship with Robert Downey Jr.) and has his hand in several other developing screenplays. And the Godzilla gig is just a four-week pass, apparently not designed at fixing any monster-sized holes in the...

Usually when you hear that a movie is being rewritten it is generally a sign of bad things to come. In the case of Godzilla, we have been waiting way too long for the Thunder Lizard to get the proper big screen treatment for their to be script issues. Well, the good news is the rewrite is being done for one purpose: to up the age of the main characters. Usually you don't see a Hollywood studio aiming for older actors, which makes me wonder just how young the screenplay from David Callahan,...

With McG‘s latest, This Means War taking fifth place in its opening weekend, the world breathlessly awaits the next batch of cinematic glop from everyone’s favorite hack. Luckily, The Playlist brings us news of what his next project is intended to be, a cop thriller called Puzzle Palace, as previously reported on.
Written by Safe House scribe David Guggenheim, Puzzle Palace is “tonally similar to Die Hard,” according to McG, and he had this to say:
The film follows “A kid who has to clear his father’s name by breaking into One Police Plaza in New York, which is the most secure building imaginable in a post-9/11 world. It’s a smaller picture, it’s designed for a [Ryan] Gosling [type actor]. It’s not as small and antithetical as ‘Drive,’ but it’s not a big giant over-the-top action picture, it’s meant to be a fun, intelligent action character study.

Getting chuffed over a domestic duck? Any self-respecting birdwatching pedant should be horrified by The Big Year
A lot of people think of birdwatching – or "birding", as we usually refer to it – as geeky. I prefer to think of it as an interesting obsession. It can certainly take over your life, as it does for the three main characters in this film: they devote an entire year of their lives – a "big year" – to travelling the length and breadth of North America, competing to spot the greatest number of bird species.
I've read the book on which the film is based: The Big Year: A Tale of Man, Nature and Fowl Obsession by Mark Obmascik. It's very well-written, with great characterisation; you especially feel for Brad Harris, the character played in the film by Jack Black, who's a working-class guy with less money than the others to spend pursuing his passion.

Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures’ new planned stab at Godzilla already has a director in place in the shape of Monsters’ Gareth Edwards, and David Callahan had written the first draft of the script. Now there appears to have been a change in that department, as regular Chris Nolan contributor and fellow filmmaker David S Goyer has been hired to take on the writing gig. Goyer, who has worked on all of Nolan’s Batman films and crafted the script for Superman reboot Man of Steel, will be working from Callahan’s draft on a new version of the Godzilla screenplay. This doesn’t mean that any new information has oozed out about what the angle might be, though surely Godzilla is not that difficult to screw up? Pit giant monsters against one another, watch them fight and provide a city or two for them to stomp. That said, if...
