- The daughter of painter and illustrator Heinz Rammelt, she began her career as a graphic artist. Private connections enabled her to enter the film industry, first as assistant set decorator and later as an extra with the Carl-Maria-von-Weber-Theater.
- A prolific actress, who became a major star on the stage and in East German films and television of the 60s and 70s. She was an ensemble member of the Volksbühne Berlin from 1965 to 2003.
- Politically engaged in the former GDR as a Member of the Presidential Council of the Kulturbund and of the Council for Culture in the Ministry of Culture.
- Her first husband was the actor/director Ulrich Thein.
- Has sidelined as a singer of chansons from the mid-60s.
