Warning: contains spoilers for The Essex Serpent TV adaptation and novel.
The pendulum swings of fate in most stories mean that whether they have a happy ending depends on where the storyteller chooses to stop. Quit while things are ahead, that’s happy; keep going until it swings back the other way, less so. The Apple TV+ version of Sarah Perry’s 2016 novel The Essex Serpent chooses to keep going past the deliberately ambiguous end of Perry’s story until it reaches the happy ending the novelist avoided.
It’s an understandable move; the six-episode TV adaptation foregrounds the romantic plot between Cora and Will (Claire Danes and Tom Hiddleston) and so generously gives that story a definite ending. The novel encompasses a broader spectrum, and as it chiefly revolves around themes of ambiguity and doubt, it characteristically leaves readers in a less secure place.

It’s a noble pursuit, trying to tie in real, mysterious sites around the world to your movie narrative, and many projects have made interesting use of such a hook. Transformers: The Last Knight is going all in, however, and will apparently attempt to make use of one of the most mysterious sites of all: Stonehenge. As Michael Bay’s giant film franchise seeks to expand its mythology and explain some origins, it seems that the ancient English monument is central to that story – according to the latest poster (seen down below).
Stonehenge is an ancient stone circle in Wiltshire, and is an iconic part of British history. It’s been dated back to between 2000 and 3000 BC and is a noted World Heritage Site, managed and maintained by charitable trusts on behalf of the Crown. Despite decades of exploration, investigation, and speculation, however, its original purpose has never been entirely confirmed.

A 12-year-old boy was exploring an abandoned house in Dayton, Ohio, when he found a mummified corpse hanging in a closet on Sunday afternoon.
Mummified Corpse Found In Abandoned House
The boy’s mother, Michelle McGrath, explained that her son has simply entered the run-down house, which has become overgrown from years of abandonment, to explore when he stumbled upon the body.
“[He] came home and he said to me that he had gone into an abandoned house and he found a body. And I said, ‘Wait, what?’” recounted McGrath.
Though her son thought that the corpse was a mannequin at first, McGrath went to investigate and confirmed the authenticity of the body.
“When I crossed the threshold of the room, is when I smelled it,” she said.
McGrath called the police and authorities arrived to find the body undisturbed.

It's a scene out of a horror movie set in the suburbs - with results true and tragic. Michelle McGrath says her 12-year-old son was drawn to the vacant home with the long-overgrown lawn on Harbine Avenue in Dayton, Ohio, and decided to poke around inside. But neither of them could have expected what he found there on Sunday afternoon: the leathery, mummified remains of a man hanging in the closet. "He was found suspended from the neck still from a belt in the closet. So it appears to be a suicide," coroner Kent Harshbarger told Whio. Not only that,...
