- Had a rich, deep voice and worked as a disc jockey in 1953 at WHIM radio in Providence, Rhode Island. In 1958, he was cast on CBS Radio as Luke Slaughter of Tombstone, which, along with the radio version of Gunsmoke, was broadcast as part of a Sunday afternoon western lineup.
- Looked much older than he was, and would play characters much older.
- Buffington was appearing regularly in the Audie Murphy TV western series 'Whispering Smith' when he killed himself at the age of 28.
- According to the Riverside (CA) Daily Enterprise of Monday, May 16, 1960, sheriff's detectives said that the night before, Buffington's wife Pat returned from Palm Springs to their West Hollywood home to find the bathroom door locked with Buffington inside and the gas jet in the bathroom going full blast. A note was left indicating his despondency over not being able to support his wife.
