Pressman Film is a production company that was founded by Ed Pressman, a prolific producer of over 90 films, including the likes of Wall Street, American Psycho, and The Crow. Sadly, Pressman passed away earlier this year at the age of 79. Now his son Sam Pressman is the CEO of Pressman Film, which recently rebooted The Crow – and landed an eight-figure domestic distribution deal for the film with Lionsgate. Moving forward, the company is working with Antoine Fuqua on a project called The Street, which was written by Goodfellas‘ Nicholas Pileggi, and planning an adaptation of the 1975 Edward Abbey novel The Monkey Wrench Gang, which will be directed by Catfish‘s Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman. They’re also trying to figure out how they can exploit titles in the Pressman Film library… and in a recent article, Deadline mentions that endeavor might involve remakes of the 1980 holiday horror film Christmas Evil...

Let’s talk about anthologies. No fun discussion of horror should be without it; it’s always a challenge to successfully pull off a short story, as you’ll see when we dig into another batch of Severin Blu-rays, this time thematically tied together by a love of the format. These discs are for all the shorties out there.
Family Portraits: A Trilogy of America (2003):
I thought we’d start with the dark before we get to the light. Family Portraits is pretty much Bleak City, yet brought to life by writer/director Douglas Buck in ways that are surprising, and even touching. The film is actually three separate shorts shot at different points in his career, put together and released as a feature with the subtitle “A Trilogy of America”. Not since “You’ll Believe A Man Can Fly” has one been that apt.

There’s a reason you were always warned not to let the bed bugs bite. As insidious as they are disgusting, the tiny creatures leave their mark — even in audio form. “The Mattress King,” one of two new episodes of Larry Fessenden and Glenn McQuaid’s “Tales From Beyond the Pale” premiering this week, serves as a potent reminder of that all-too-timely fact.
Written by Clay McLeod Chapman, the 30-minute narrative is joined by Douglas Buck’s “Hidden Records.” Kevin Cline, Tony Todd, Susan Corbett, Alexandre Lazarre, and Esinam Beckley lend their voices to the latter story, which tells of a wayward teenager whose record collection includes an LP that links the worlds of the living and the dead — namely the boy’s departed father.

Welcome to the third installment of my ongoing series of articles that collects great horror short films.
If you have not already done so, please check out the first two installments of this series “Watch 15 Great Horror Short Films” and its follow-up “Watch 13 More Great Horror Short Films” not only because you’ll love them but also because films and filmmakers mentioned in those articles are referenced in this one.
Short form horror aficionados will also want to check out a recent article I wrote called “The Greatest Horror Anthology Film Segments of All Time”.
As you readers know, the horror short film is an artistic endeavor that can serve as a film industry calling card. A perfect example of this is the recent announcement of the feature film version of Can Evrenol’s superb horror short Baskin.

Popular in the 1960s and early 1970s with more rare appearances in the 1980s, 1990s and the 2000s, the anthology-style horror film has made a solid resurgence in recent years with such portmanteau releases as The ABCs of Death films and the V/H/S series.
With Mexico Barbaro, Fear Paris and other projects in various stages of completion, the anthology horror film looks to continue to be an important part of the horror cinema landscape.
Some anthology films employ a framing or wraparound sequence in an attempt to connect the segments that make up the film while others dispense with this classic Amicus-style approach entirely and simply present a collection of short films connected by genre.
Either way, a horror anthology film is ultimately about the quality of its individual segments and this article will take you on a tour of the greatest horror anthology segments of all time.

Following up on my previous article, “Watch 15 Great Horror Short Films,” which received a very positive response, I’ve researched and collected 13 more superb horror short films. As with the first article, I limited the choices to stand-alone live-action horror short films not produced for an anthology film and the selections were narrowed down by availability.
In further keeping with the criteria of the first article, animated horror short films and horror-comedy short films were excluded from consideration as both of these categories would make good subjects for their own individual articles. Sorry, Brutal Relax and Fist of Jesus fans.
It should also be noted that a number of highly regarded horror shorts readers might clamor to see in an article like this such as Ryan Haysom’s Yellow continue their long festival runs and have not been posted for online viewing and were therefore not considered for this piece.

The anthology horror film is back in the wake of the success of chapter-style horror films like The Theatre Bizarre (2011) and its announced follow-up, V/H/S (2012), the soon-to-be-released sequel V/H/S 2 (2013) and The ABC’s of Death (2012).
While this movement generates a good deal of conversation about the fondly remembered Amicus productions of the 1960’s and 1970’s like Dr. Terror’s House Of Horrors (Freddie Francis, 1965), Torture Garden (Freddie Francis, 1967), The House That Dripped Blood (Peter Duffell, 1971) and Asylum (Roy Ward Baker, 1972) among others, the comparison is not exactly accurate across the board.
While the segments of V/H/S are unified by shared visual style and a wraparound story, The Theatre Bizarre and The ABC’s of Death come off as collections of essentially unrelated horror short films loosely bound by a flimsy wraparound segment in the case of The Theatre Bizarre or a basic concept as...

Hey everyone! Jeff here with a quick recap of Day Two of the Toronto After Dark 2012 film festival. Today was a little bit quieter, as I was still recovering from lack of sleep, but I did see one film that I very much like. The other? Well, we’ll get into that in a minute…
Luckily, when I got to the Bloor Hot Docs Cinema, I was able to get a good seat, which always makes the screening more enjoyable. As usual, the first film was preceded by a Canadian-made short. This time around, it was Jovanka Vuckovic’s The Captured Bird. Seeing as Vuckovic Vuckovic used to be the Editor In Chief over at Rue Morgue Magazine, there has been a lot of buzz about this short; which is also her first foray into filmmaking. *full disclosure: a DVD screener of this film was provided by Image Entertainment. Directors: Douglas Buck, Buddy Giovinazzo, David Gregory, Karim Hussain, Jeremy Kasten, Tom Savini and Richard Stanley. Cast: Guilford Adams, Elissa Dowling, James Gill, Lindsay Goranson, Udo Kier, Tom Savini and Debbie Rochon. Moody and atmospheric, The Theatre Bizarre is an anthology collection of shorts that journeys through Jacobean style surrealist fringe theatre. This opening narrative may not have the same circus charm as Labyrinth in "Manie Manie" (aka "Neo Tokyo"), an animated product from Japan, but the similar approach is certainly noticeable. Both products convey a sense of unworldliness, and thankfully there is a segment that explores the world through the eyes of a young child, a girl. While the live-action does not have the budget to mimic the grandiose vision that the animated masterpiece offered, the shadow play and decayed sets of the stitching narrative certainly works to draw.

Anthologies are rather prevalent in the horror genre as of late, and by late, I mean in the past few years. Trick r’ Treat seemed to have ushered in an era of anthologies that tried to be similar to Creepshow in that they have all tried to create an image that is lasting. Though many disagree with me, I think Chillerama was competent for what it was trying to achieve. I don’t think it’s amazing or that it will be talked about years from now, but it was not a horrible addition to the sub-genre. Deadtime Stories was a miss but does anyone think that a film with Romero’s name attached with actually be good? So here we are with The Theatre Bizarre, a cheaply made anthology that combines the work of 7 directors (six stories, one connecting thread). Each director was given a set amount of money...

While I’ve seen more than a few indie horror anthologies of late—some good, others forgettable—the anthology film seems to be making a comeback. Like the classic George Romero/Stephen King Creepshow (1982) and the impending The ABCs Of Death due out later this year, The Theatre Bizarre (2011) is one of those films that lives up to its buzz….and fans’ expectations. Six shorts linked by framing scenes make up The Theatre Bizarre, a film being distributed by Severin Films.
The film’s opening and framing segments, directed by Jeremy Kasten (Wizard Of Gore {2007}) titled “Theatre Guignol” star the wonderfully bizarre Udo Kier as a life-size marionette and story teller in an abandoned theater. Virginia Newcomb plays a young woman obsessed with the old theater, who sneaks into it one fateful night to hear the strange stories. Throughout the segments are a cast of weird,...

Title: The Theatre Bizarre Directors: Jeremy Kasten, Richard Stanley, Buddy Giovinazzo, Tom Savini, Douglas Buck, Karim Hussain and David Gregory Starring: Udo Kier, Catriona MacColl, Virginia Newcomb, Suzan Anbeh, Andre Hennicke, Debbie Rochon, Tom Savini, Lena Kleine, Victoria Maurette, Lindsay Goranson, Guilford Adams Six discrete stories of varying levels of effectiveness come together in “The Theatre Bizarre,” a macabre horror anthology that eschews the laborious weirdness of something like Christopher Landon’s “Burning Palms,” and instead focuses more forthrightly on crafting and sustaining a mood of uneasiness. The main commingled narrative ingredients are genre staples — sex, compulsion, paranoia and obsession – which work well for a movie that doesn’t shy away from...

The resurgence in anthology horror films has been fascinating -- and heartening -- to see, both in a professional sense (filmmakers working together; short subjects receiving more attention when combined into a feature-length project) and a creative one (different approaches to a linked theme or subject). Opening today in limited release, The Theater Bizarre -- theater information here -- features six short films, individually directed by Douglas Buck, Buddy Giovinazzo, David Gregory, Karim Hussain, Tom Savini and Richard Stanley. Our own Kurt Halfyard saw it last summer at Fantasia. In his review, he noted that the project ... "... has its genesis in Montreal's Fantasia, but its component parts were made by a diverse collection of filmmakers who traffick in gore and brains well outside...

Horror anthology The Theatre Bizarre opens today in limited theatrical release which makes now a good time to look back at the film's world premiere back in July as part of the Fantasia Festival in Montreal. With parts of the film shot in and around the city and one segment directed by former festival programmer Karim Hussain, the festival pulled out all the stops for this one, flying in the directors of every segment to be present at the launch and running them all out on stage before and after the screening to talk about the film. So, if you're ready, take a moment to hear what Douglas Buck, Buddy Giovinazzo, David Gregory, Karim Hussain, Jeremy Kasten, Tom Savini and Richard Stanley have to say...

The Theatre Bizarre
Directed by Richard Stanley, Buddy Giovinazzo, Douglas Buck, Karim Hussain, David Gregory, Tom Savini and Jeremy Kasten
USA/France, 2011
A horror anthology in seven parts, The Theatre Bizarre is a throwback to the tradition of the port-manteaux films of the `60s and `70s. The main exponent of this type of film then was Amicus Films, a small British production company established by two American ex-pats (Max J. Rosenberg and Milton Subotsky) who wanted to take on the mighty (at the time anyways) Hammer Films at their game. The Theatre Bizarre, then, is a deliberate callback to that era, but with a contemporary sensibility that could only come from these directors having been exposed to myriad horror films by the likes of Fulci and Argento, and their own previous works of course; a true cross-pollination of styles and moods that is as refreshing and revolting as one might reasonably expect.

Last year The 15th annual Fantasia Film Festival unleashed one of it’s biggest and best slates to date. Among its 114-film lineup were gala world premieres of Robin Hardy’s long-awaited The Wicker Tree – a film which Sound On Sight’s own Justine Smith called, “not only a great genre film, but a film that pushes the boundaries of cinema itself, easily on par with the works of our greatest contemporary filmmakers.”The Wicker Tree of course marked the follow up to the seminal 1974 Pagan masterwork The Wicker man. Hardy wasn’t the only veteran filmmaker present for a World Premiere. Among the many great guests were the directors of the anthology horror film The Theatre Bizarre, which featured segments by Douglas Buck, Buddy Giovinazzo, David Gregory, Karim Hussain, Tom Savini and one of my personal favourite filmmakers, Richard Stanley (Dust Devil, Hardware). To celebrate the dual return to...

New horror movie anthology The Theatre Bizarre caused something of a ruckus when it screened at a film festival in Oldenburg, Germany, last September. The specific source of said ruckus? A segment called “Vision Stains” in which a young woman uses a hypodermic needle to transfer fluid from the eyeballs of her murder victims to her own ocular apparatus so she can “see” their memories.
“It was the first festival we played that wasn’t a genre festival,” says David Gregory, who produced the film and directed one of the segments, along with Richard Stanley (Hardware), Douglas Buck, and the “Vision Stains” -making Karim Hussein,...

It just dawned on me... Episode 40?! I never imagined Choice Cuts would keeping rolling along like it has, but here we are, 40 episodes down.
This is our third, and final, installment tied in to The Theatre Bizarre, a horror anthology film opening in theaters January 27. For the last couple of weeks, we've been talking to the contributing directors involved (click here for our previous two episodes) and this week we have Buddy Giovinazzo, director of Combat Shock and the segment in The Theatre Bizarre entitled "I Love You," in the hot seat.
Now, just because this is our last Bizarre-themed episode that doesn't mean we're done speaking with the directors. Tune in to future episodes of Shock Till You Drop's Shock Waves podcast for our chats with Tom Savini, Karim Hussain, Richard Stanley and Douglas Buck.

A new trailer has been released for an insanely crazy looking surreal film called The Theater Bizarre. This looks like the kind of horror film you have to have an acquired taste for. The most looks incredibly far out and depending on the type of person you are... it could be entertaining. I'm not sure what the hell is going on in this trailer other than a punch of random disturbing shots of madness. I will remind you that this is a red-band trailer and is Nsfw.
The film is an anthology of horror ffeaturing stories from David Gregory, Buddy Giovinazzo, Richard Stanley, Douglas Buck, Karim Hussain, Tom Savini and Jeremy Kasten.
But, there is a synopsis, and here it is...

The Theatre Bizarre
Directed by Various
2011, Canada/USA/France, 108 minutes
Omnibus films tend to appeal mainly to hard-core fans and other filmmakers. That isn’t a bad thing. In the case of The Theatre Bizarre, some of horror’s nuttiest and most demented talents can be just as nutty and demented as they want. If you’re a horror fan, it’s a grab bag of treats; you’ll love some and hate others, but that’s part of the pleasure. If you’re a filmmaker, then The Theatre Bizarre is a twisted little laboratory. After all, experiments are always useful, even if they don’t always work.
“Mother of Toads”
Directed by Richard Stanley
Richard Stanley’s Lovecraft-inspired segment is also the most like a fairy tale. It’s certainly cautionary (don’t trust strange old women who live alone in the woods!), but it’s also creepy in a gross,...
