From Mary Tyler Moore’s black capri pants to the waist-cinching corsets on Bridgerton, the costumes on television’s hottest shows over the past 70-plus years have influenced what we wear more than viewers may realize. That’s the premise of Hal Rubenstein’s just-released book, which is sure to spawn an escapist deep dive by even the most casual TV fan.
Dressing the Part: Television’s Most Stylish Shows (Harper, $36) explores the costume design of 50 high-profile TV series, from I Love Lucy and The Donna Reed Show in the 1950s, to Downton Abbey, Sex and the City, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and others. But it was Bridgerton that inspired the idea for the book. “Harper wanted to do a book on Bridgerton’s costume design, and my feeling was that it was a period costume show that [didn’t relate yet],” Rubenstein told The Hollywood Reporter. “I thought we would see the ramifications...

When legendary Western hatter John B. Stetson invented the first commercially manufactured cowboy hat in 1865, he probably didn’t expect it would become a major fashion accessory more than a century and a half later. And yet around the world today, cowboy hats are worn by more people than ever before, and much of the credit for their newfound popularity goes to the costume designers of “Yellowstone” and “1923,” and to the shows’ creator, Taylor Sheridan.
Award-winning costume designer Janie Bryant created the costumes for the “Yellowstone” prequels “1923” and “1883,” and she believes the timeless appeal of cowboy hats is due, in large part, to their symbolic associations. “I think it really is about the American spirit,” she says. “There’s a wildness, a pioneering spirit, and a sense of freedom that we identify with the cowboy hat. It’s iconically American, and I think people relate with it globally.”

The latest series in Taylor Sheridan’s “Yellowstone” franchise, “1923,” tells the story of a world in transition. The rural, classically Western values of “1883” are colliding with the modern technology of washing machines and automobiles, and the scope of the mythology has expanded beyond American borders to follow characters all over the world. That meant big challenges and exciting opportunities for costume designer Janie Bryant, who was tasked with creating wardrobe for hundreds of speaking roles and stunt players as well as thousands of extras. “We shot the show on three continents and I had four costume teams: one in L.A., one in Montana, one in South Africa, and one in Malta,” Bryant told IndieWire. “You have to take it a few days at a time, or a week at a time. You can’t think of the whole all at once because it’s too overwhelming.”

“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” is twirling offstage and “The Crown” finally got to The Revenge Dress, so it has not exactly been a low-key television season when it comes to costuming. (Not to mention the genius Easter eggs hidden in Tanya’s costumes on “The White Lotus.”) But no one is surprised when shows with fabulous costumes continue to exhibit their skill at crafting fabulous costumes that serve as eye candy and character development. Here are five series that premiered during the 2022-2023 season that deserve attention from the 2023 Emmys for their costumes.

You've seen Harrison Ford fight a star war, but in the "Yellowstone" prequel series, "1923," he's fighting a ranch war, and he's doing it in style. Ford is no stranger to wearing a hat in his movie roles; he'll be doing it again next year in "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny." However, rather than Indy's iconic Fedora hat, "1923" sees Ford donning a cowboy hat as Montana rancher Jacob Dutton, who — together with his wife, Cara Dutton, played by Dame Helen Mirren — finds himself fending off sheep farmers on the open range.
Created by Taylor Sheridan, "1923" is just the latest spin-off in the "Yellowstone" TV universe. It's a sequel to "1883," and it marks Ford's first regular TV role. Yes, he appeared in "The Star Wars Holiday Special," but we don't talk about that.
"1923" costume designer Janie Bryant is one crew member who really felt the weight of Ford's hat-wearing legacy.

Choosing Harrison Ford‘s most important accessory turned out to be quite a challenge. In an interview with Variety, Janie Bryant, “1923”‘s costume designer, revealed that she tried approximately 75 hats on the actor as he suited up to play Jacob Dutton, the great-great uncle to John Dutton III (Kevin Costner), in the 1920s-set “Yellowstone” prequel series.
“It’s all about his hat. We made so many for him,” Bryant said. “All the different colors — trying the different creases, the different brims, the different crown heights. It was definitely a process.”
That process included herself, Ford and the show’s creator, Taylor Sheridan, Bryant said.
“Taylor is also very specific about the kind of hat that he likes, too,” she said. “There was a lot of collaboration with Taylor, with Harrison and myself to create what I call the ‘Jacob.'”

Putting a hat on Harrison Ford is no simple task.
The actor, who made Indiana Jones’ fedora iconic, needed a new topper for his role opposite Helen Mirren in 1923, Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone spinoff centered on the Dutton family. “It’s all about the hat on a Western,” costume designer Janie Bryant told The Hollywood Reporter at the recent premiere. “I worked with my hat maker for weeks to make a lot of different hats in different colors and silhouettes.”
Just how many hats did they make? “I’m guessing about 75,” admits Bryant, the Mad Men costume designer who won an Emmy for her work on Deadwood. “We made so many hats but we had to get the crease just right. And we finally found it and I said, ‘That’s [Jacob Dutton’s] hat with the Montana crease.’”

Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren first played husband and wife in the 1986 Peter Weir film “The Mosquito Coast”. The veteran actress has praised him and said that the actor taught her a “great deal about film acting”.
“When we first worked together, he was a huge movie star and I was like nobody,” Mirren told Variety with a laugh at the red carpet premiere of “1923” on Friday night, reports ‘Variety’.
“So I was very intimidated.”
By 1986, Ford had already portrayed Han Solo in the original “Star Wars” trilogy and starred in two “Indiana Jones” features.
She continued, “I learned a lot from him because I hadn’t done a lot. I had done a lot of theatre at that point, (but) I hadn’t done a lot of movies. So I watched him and he taught me a great deal about film acting that, to this day, I’m still using.

“I’m not a funny person so I don’t know how I got into comedy,” says costume designer Michelle R. Cole, explaining how surprising it is that she wound up working on shows like “In Living Color” and “Black-ish” after coming from a theater background and studying period design. We talked with Cole and her fellow costume designers Janie Bryant (“1883”), Kameron Lennox (“Pam and Tommy”), Hala Bahmet (“This is Us”), Ian Fulcher (“A Very British Scandal”) and Laura Montgomery (“What We Do in the Shadows”) about the periods and settings they’d most like the design for. “The journey with these characters is very different,” says costume designer Janie Bryant about how her work on the limited series “1883” compared to her Emmy winning wardrobe for another western drama that took place in almost exactly the same time period, the 1870s-set “Deadwood.” What is the same is I’m glad that I had the experience of so much distressing with ‘Deadwood’ because it really did help in terms of understanding how distressing works with ‘1883.’” We talked to Bryant as part of our “Meet the Experts” TV costume designers panel. The death of fashion and costume designer Karl Lagerfeld cast somewhat of a shadow over the usually jubilant Costume Designers Guild Awards — the only award show where clothes literally steal the spotlight away from actors — which was held at the Beverly Hilton on Tuesday night. Here it was obvious that Lagerfeld’s impact on Hollywood went far beyond an uncredited cameo in “Zoolander.”
Glenn Close, who was being honored with the spotlight award, recalled her one and only encounter with Lagerfeld. “I’m not deep into the world of fashion, but I did meet him personally on the set of ‘101 Dalmatians’ and we had this incredible photo shoot,” Close said. “He was wonderful — I got along really well with him. And the thing that I find so impressive is that he designed himself, you know? This person with the high collars and the dark glasses and the gloves. It’s like: Wow,...

First Man (2018) is not a movie overly preoccupied with fashion, And why would it be? The focus of the story is astronaut Neil Armstrong (Ryan Gosling) and his journey to become the first person to ever walk on the surface of the moon. Armstrong wears a lot of button down shirts, short sleeve checks, neutral slacks, the odd dark single breasted suit for formal occasions – largely dour attire for a dour man. He also wears a space suit, several of them. However, outside of Emilio Pucci’s involvement in designing the logo for the Apollo 15 flight in 1971, fashion rarely intersects with the requirements of surviving in space. First Man costume designer Mary Zophres ensures Armstrong feels of his time for the film’s 1961 – 1969 setting, but it is difficult to not be more drawn toward the clothing worn by his wife Janet (Claire Foy). Not that she is sartorially distracting in any way,...

When Matthew Weiner planned his next project, there was never a question in his mind: He wanted to get the gang back together.
After all, the creator of the acclaimed drama “Mad Men” is renowned for his meticulous attention to detail, and indeed that series won multiple trophies for every aspect of its production. So when he conceived of “The Romanoffs,” Amazon’s new anthology series about characters who claim to be descendants of the legendary Russian royal family, the first calls he made were to the skilled artisans who shaped “Mad Men,” from casting and production design to costume and hair and makeup.
“They are the best at what they do,” says Weiner, who wrote and directed every episode. “It’s not just a friendship. It’s a matter of trust, and a matter of respect.”
But this time, instead of painstakingly depicting advertising culture in New York in the 1960s,...

Christina Hendricks scored six Emmy noms for portraying sassy Joan Holloway in “Mad Men” and is now playing a suburban-mom-turned-supermarket-robber in NBC’s “Good Girls.” Such intrepidness extends to her wardrobe. “I’ve fallen in love with dresses with bold prints or unusual finishes and been warned I’ll be criticized,” Hendricks says. “I don’t care anymore. We need interesting and unique fashion choices on the red carpet.”
2008
“Mad Men” was the first basic-cable show nominated for (and crowned) best drama, but this didn’t equate to instant fame for its cast. “We really were the new kids to the party and nobody knew who we were,” Hendricks recalls. Hendricks worked with Tadashi Shoji on a black, long-sleeved dress that ended up redesigned as an emerald, Grecian gown she calls “the perfect green.” She topped it off with a headpiece made from a Neil Lane brooch.

Costume designer Ann Roth, arguably one of the greatest of her craft still working in Hollywood, has costumed director Steven Spielberg’s latest The Post, and by the looks of this first trailer we are in for a muted treat:
What we have are gentlemen sporting classic collar points with moderate spread, sometimes short sleeve (always with a chest pocket – a very American touch) and medium breadth neckties. The occasional kipper, but this 1971 is a very different world than, say, The Deuce (costume designer Anna Terrazas).
Most of the male cast are are old school in their style of dress. The 1960s is far from leaving their wardrobes.
As Kay Graham, Meryl Streep gives perhaps the broadest hints as to the film’s era. She is an a position of wealth and power, which would have afforded her the latest fashions – as comparatively conservative as they seem here.

It's hard to believe that anyone really loved clowns even before Stephen King came along, but the latest film version of his clown-based horror novel 'It' is making people more afraid of those circus freaks than ever. Non-horrific clowns are reportedly having a hard time finding work under the shadow of King's terrifying Pennywise.

Stephen King has ticked off the clowns.
Last April, the horror author — currently in the midst of a Hollywood renaissance that includes adaptations of The Dark Tower and, out this weekend, New Line's It — tweeted that the big-shoed performers were “pissed at me. Sorry, most are great. But,” he continued, “kids have always been scared of clowns. Don’t kill the messengers for the message.”

There are quite a few puzzling aspects to The Last Tycoon, but the biggest head-scratcher of all is: If your studio executive looks like Matt Bomer, why not just put him in all your movies?
Bomer’s matinee-idol looks are certainly put to good use in Amazon’s retro Hollywood drama (debuting Friday, July 28) — he looks damn good in a tailored suit and fedora — but like a lot of The Last Tycoon, the substance falls far short of the image. Plagued by corny dialogue and clumsy plotting, this ambitious series aims for the stars but plays more like a first-weekend flop.

The new movie version of Stephen King's It will be a 15, and well over two hours long...
Good news for fans of Stephen King's classic 1986 horror novel It: the movie version doesn't look like it'll skimp on the extensive plot that follows Bill and the rest of his childhood friends as they seek to end the terrifying reign of Pennywise the Clown in their small town of Derry, Maine.
The BBFC have slapped It with a 15 certificate, which was certainly expected from the disturbing trailers we've had so far for the film, and it'll be 134 minutes long, so you're in for a bit of a sit down when it arrives in cinemas next month. You can also expect "strong horror, violence and language." The film was passed uncut.
Here's the latest TV spot...
Mama director Andres Muschietti will finally deliver the big screen adaptation...

Matt Bomer and husband Simon Halls are set to be honored at Hollygrove’s annual Norma Jean Gala when it takes place on May 18.
Bomer, 39, and Halls, 53, will both receive the Ambassador of Children award at the event, which raises funds for Uplift Family Services — a non-profit agency that provides help and hope to more than 1,200 at-risk children and their families in L.A. — and its behavioral and mental health programs.
“We are so honored to be recognized by Uplift Family Services at Hollygrove in this way and are in awe of the work that they do to support children and families in need,...

When I first saw the new Pennywise's clown costume, I was a little taken aback. Is that a dress? Is Pennywise starring in the new Jane Austen mashup? Behold! #Pennywise the Clown's eerie costume from @StephenKing's 'It' is Here! https://t.co/e1st7ljUAe #ITmovie ???? pic.twitter.com/zHefjxj4TJ — Entertainment Weekly (@EW) August 16, 2016 When viewed in its full measure, the costume turned out to be far more multi-dimensional than it initially appeared, though it's still a little disconcerting; there are lot of frills and ruffles and puffy things there that evoke distinct periods from English history, and it's a drastically different look from the one sported by Tim Curry when he played the character in 1990. I'm still processing this, but costume designer Janie Bryant provides a pretty detailed explanation for the different facets of the look over at EW, which at least offers some context: “The costume definitely...

Tim Curry may haunted your nightmares as Pennywise the Clown when you were younger, but Bill Skarsgard is looking to take over when Andy Muschietti's take on Stephen King's It hits our screens next year. EW have our first full look at Pennywise in full costume and, boy, is it terrifying in a much more in your face way than Curry's take on Pennywise. The publication also talked to Emmy award winning costume Janie Bryant (Mad Men) who shed some light on the reasoning behind the new costume: He is definitely a clown from a different time. There is almost a doll-like quality to the costume. The pants being short, the high waistline of the jacket, and the fit of the costume is a very important element. It gives the character a child-like quality. With the story split across two movies, It Part 1 is set for release September 8th 2017.

Andy Muschietti’s adaptation of Stephen King’s It will be arriving next year. While we already know what the face painting of the new Pennywise the Clown looks like, there are other details missing – like his costume. That was revealed today via Entertainment Weekly and I feel like I’m already hearing complaints.
From Entertainment Weekly’s post:
Bill Skarsgård is playing the ageless, supernatural beast who feeds on the fears of children, and it’s clear director Andy Muschietti (Mama) is steering away from the modern, baggy-suited, rainbow-hued clown for something a bit more… archaic.
For that, the filmmaker relied on Emmy-winning costume designer Janie Bryant (Deadwood, Mad Men) who crafted a form-fitting suit that draws upon a number of bygone times – among them Medieval, Renaissance, Elizabethan, and Victorian eras.
It directed by Andy Mischietti will be out September 8, 2017.

Stephen King’s novel “It” follows seven children who are terrorized by an ageless, shape-shifting evil that exploits the fears and phobias of its victims. The evil primarily takes the role of a sadistic clown named Pennywise. Infamously played by Tim Curry in the 1986 miniseries based on the novel, Pennywise will now be played by Bill Skarsgård (“Anna Karenina,” “Allegiant”) in the upcoming 2017 film.
