In George Lucas' 1977 film "Star Wars," a military-run, fascist Empire rules the galaxy and it's up to a scrappy group of Rebels to attack them and destroy their ultimate weapon: a moon-sized space station capable of exploding entire planets with a single shot (known as the Death Star). In "Star Wars," the highest-ranking Empire official audiences see is Grand Moff Tarkin (Peter Cushing), a stern commanding officer who orders many to their deaths and who commands an eerie masked space wizard named Darth Vader. At one point, Tarkin mentions that the Empire has an Emperor, although we never actually see him in the flesh.
In the 1980 sequel "The Empire Strikes Back," it is revealed that Darth Vader was always a high-ranking individual in the Empire, as we now see him commanding entire Star Destroyers. It is also revealed that Vader answers directly to the mysterious Emperor, who only appears in the form of a hologram.

When I was nine years old, my dad told my mom that he was taking me out for ice cream. What he didn’t tell her was that — on our way to Baskin Robbins — we’d be making a pit stop at “Jurassic Park,” a movie that she had forbidden me from seeing on account of the fact that it would obviously scare the living shit out of her ultra-neurotic son. This was in June 1993, about three months after a Terry Brooks fantasy novel had terrified me into thinking that the actual Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse were going to ride across our front lawn at night; in my defense, the suburbs of Connecticut seemed like a perfectly natural place for them to begin their attack.
In the end, I was so profoundly traumatized by the opening scene of that poor dinosaur handler being killed by the velociraptor that my...

We talked to author Jennifer Estep about moving into the genre of epic fantasy storytelling with Kill the Queen.
Jennifer Estep is no stranger to fantasy. I’ve been reading her novels since her superhero romance Bigtime novels hit the shelves. She’s the author of two young adult urban fantasy series, as well as the Elemental Assassin series, which has already clocked over seventeen novels starring Gin Blanco, an assassin with elemental magic who also runs a barbecue joint.
With Kill the Queen, Estep has released her first novel in the epic fantasy genre. It suits her, as Kill the Queen is her strongest writing yet...
The novel introduces Lady Everleigh “Evie” Blair, distantly in line to the throne of Bellona. But when a Game of Thrones-worthy royal massacre kills nearly every member of the royal family, Evie only narrowly escapes. Not knowing who to trust,...

Epic fantasy adaptation The Shannara Chronicles won't be making the journey from Spike TV to the new Paramount network...
Spike TV is about to rebrand to the Paramount Network, and in the process it's leaving some shows behind. The Shannara Chronicles will be one of those shows, Paramount Network President Kevin Kay revealed at the Television Critics Association winter press tour this week.
"Maybe (production company Sonar Entertainment) is going to take it somewhere else,” Kay told TVGuide.com. “For us, we passed on the future of that.”
Sonar Entertainment is indeed shopping season 3 of the show to other networks and streaming services, and it's worth noting that The Shannara Chronicles has survived a network change already before - switching from MTV to Spike TV between its first and second seasons. Still, this cancellation seems like it will stick, given the show's poor ratings.

If you're a fan of shows like Hercules: The Legendary Journey and Xena: Warrior Princess, then you definitely want to pick up the first season of MTV's The Shannara Chronicles, executive produced by Jon Favreau. The series was a surprise hit for MTV, thanks to the dynamic chemistry between series leads Austin Butler, Poppy Drayton, Manu Bennett and Ivana Baquero. They manage to elevate basic fantasy troupes into absorbing drama thanks to a precision-cut storyline that doesn't waste time moving the story along. Also, with the show largely based on the second entry in the The Original Shannara Trilogy, there will be plenty of moments and settings that those who have read the entire saga will recognize and appreciate. If you like swords, magic and monsters then you may definitely want to consider adding the season one blu-ray to your Holiday Wish-List. The world of J.R.R. Tolkien, brought to the screen by Peter Jackson, continues to cast a shadow over fantasy cinema...
One realm to rule them all. One realm to find them, one realm to bring them all and in the darkness bind them, in the land of Middle-earth where the shadows lie.
Now, far be it from me to ever describe Middle-earth as a dark shadow over anything, but for everyone else trying to make a mega-hit fantasy film, the very thought of competing with Peter Jackson’s adaptations of The Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit must seem the equivalent of toppling literal evil on Earth.
It seems that any time a big-budget fantasy flick is released, they get sneered at as generic, lacking the richness of detail or story compared to Lord Of The Rings.
But if this sounds like I’m suggesting there...

MTV's big-budget fantasy Terry Brooks adaptation, The Shannara Chronicles, will return for a second season...
MTV's glossy adaptation of Terry Brooks' Shannara series will live to pout another day. A second season of The Shannara Chronicles has been ordered by the channel.
Set in the fantasy realm of the Four Lands, decades after Earth as we know it destroyed itself, The Shannara Chronicles season one told a story of magic, elves, demons, druids (well, a druid) and important blue stones. There was also quite a lot of gratuitous showering involving its nubile young castmembers, if we recall.
Here's a link to our spoiler-filled reviews of the series, and an interview with Elf King himself, Mr John Rhys-Davies.
Good news then, for fans. Especially as the series really began to settle into its tone by the conclusion of season one, which starred Manu Bennett, Ivana Basquero, Austin Butler and Poppy Drayton.

The Shannara Chronicles ends season 1 on a characteristically uneven finale. Will MTV renew the show for season 2?
This review contains spoilers.
1.10 Ellcrys
As The Shannara Chronicles reaches its finale, it’s difficult to know which version of the show will turn up. Will it be the entertaining fantasy romp with a mature edge as demonstrated in Changeling and Pykon or the cheesy and cliché-ridden mess that typified episodes such as week eight’s Utopia? Perhaps fittingly, Ellcrys provides a little bit of both but ultimately delivers more of the former, ensuring an enjoyable, if flawed, ending to a show that has attracted derision and lukewarm praise in mostly equal measure.
The episode kicks things off with a less than stellar quasi-dream sequence featuring Amberle in conversation with a manifestation of the Ellcrys tree. The scene is designed to inform viewers of something book readers will only be...

1.9 Safehold
Considering last week’s instalment of The Shannara Chronicles was titled Utopia, the episode itself turned out to be very far from the ideals of harmony and perfection such a word usually connotes. The concept, the setting, the clumsy attempt to shoehorn modern culture into the narrative, the uneven division of screen-time afforded to each story arc, the poor character development; there were very few redeeming features to be found and as such, it would have been a near impossible task for the show’s subsequent offering to decline further in quality.
Nevertheless, Safehold should be praised and credited for just how quickly and effortlessly it gets The Shannara Chronicles back on the right track. The episode recaptures the...

While The Shannara Chronicles' production values remain through the roof, its storytelling keeps ignoring the best bits...
This review contains spoilers.
1.7 Breakline
MTV’s fantasy drama series The Shannara Chronicles is at its most watchable when limiting the scope of its episodes and focusing on one or two areas of interest per week. It gives the show room to breathe and the audience time to invest in the tribulations of the characters. It is perhaps no surprise then that seventh offering, Breakline, struggles somewhat to maintain interest levels as the episode attempts to take on several large chunks of plot in one go.
Breakline splits the central Amberle, Eretria and Wil trio into two groups while also introducing several new characters: the recently uni-eared elf Perk and the hunter with a grudge, Zora. But the episode also attempts to resolve the fate of Allanon after his stabbing last week,...

The Shannara Chronicles gang are left up a certain creek without a paddle by the end of this week's mostly entertaining episode...
This review contains spoilers.
1.6 Pykon
If The Lord Of The Rings taught us anything, it’s never to take a shortcut through a snowy mountain fortress because you will end up falling into a chasm alongside a demon. Unfortunately no one informed the increasingly ragtag band of protagonists in The Shannara Chronicles of this golden rule as this week’s adventure marks a trip through Pykon, an old Elven outpost manned by Riff Raff from The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
After an introductory dream sequence in which Amberle ends up snogging the demon overlord (it’s as funny as it sounds), the episode takes quite a while to really get going, initially dealing with several disparate plot threads that aren’t quite given the requisite time to make an impact.

Is The Shannara Chronicles starting to finds its groove? It looks that way in episode 5, which features some impressive gnomes...
This review contains spoilers.
1.5 Reaper
After last week’s Changeling demonstrated a significant step-up in quality storytelling, The Shannara Chronicles finds itself at a defining crossroads; use its fourth episode’s strength as a platform for further success or slip back into the bad habits of its opening ventures. Happily, this week’s follow up, Reaper, continues the show’s upward trend and has the distinct air of a series finding its groove.
In an especially welcome move, Reaper finally begins to clean up the mess of main protagonist Amberle’s characterisation. Not only are viewers treated to a flashback depicting a watershed moment in her life: her father’s death but the ‘road trip’ format of the episode provides a more stable environment in which to showcase Amberle’s personality.

The Shannara Chronicles still has plenty to work on, but its latest episode, Changeling, moves things in a more promising direction...
This review contains spoilers.
1.4 Changeling
If you’ve stuck with The Shannara Chronicles up to its current fourth instalment, firstly well done and secondly, congratulations because your perseverance has paid off. Changeling signals a marked improvement upon previous offerings and goes some way to amending the considerable missteps made in the series thus far.
The main reason for this upturn in form is the more self-contained nature of the episode that sees our band of protagonists attempt to uncover an enemy agent in their midst. One of the most frustrating things about The Shannara Chronicles has been its manic pacing and despite this week’s improvement, Changeling isn’t completely innocent of this. Amberle’s trial within the trunk of the Ellcrys flies by so quickly...

The Shannara Chronicles shows signs of character improvement in its second episode, but hasn't shaken the grave, over-dramatic tone...
This review contains spoilers.
1.3 Fury
It would be fair to say that The Shannara Chronicles’ opening double bill was not exactly a watershed moment in the history of must-see television. But given the quality of the books on which the show is based and the strength of the first two episodes’ visual style (far and away its strongest feature), there’s reason to believe The Shannara Chronicles has scope for improvement.
Having said that, things don’t get off to the most promising of starts. If elf princess Amberle was last week’s ‘being in the buff for no real reason’ victim, the opening ten minutes of Fury marked Wil’s (Austin Butler) turn to be ruthlessly ogled. Whilst there’s no room to be prudish in 2016 and gratuitous nudity is,...

Channel 5 has bought the UK rights to MTV's glossy new Terry Brooks adaptation, The Shannara Chronicles for 5*...
Not content with nabbing the UK rights to Fox's forthcoming X-Files miniseries and Heroes Reborn, Channel 5 has just announced that it's also put MTV's The Shannara Chronicles into its shopping basket.
The ten-episode first season of the "epic fantasy saga" started airing in the Us last week. There's no official word yet on when 5* is planning to slot it into the schedules, but we'll update this story as soon as the UK air date is confirmed.
Adapted from Terry Brooks' Shannara fantasy novel series, The Shannara Chronicles tell the story of the Four Lands, where "an Elvin princess, a bandit and a half-Elf tasked with stopping the end of the world." 2016 is going to be a bitchin’ year for science fiction and fantasy television shows. Not only for new shows hitting your screen but returning favorites! Here are some of our favorites that we are looking forward to over the next twelve months:
Mid Season Premieres:
“iZombie” (January 12, The CW)
Our darling but reluctant zombie Liv has broken up with Major for what feels like the billionth time (poor Major amiright?), the mob boss and Max Rager company are still on the loose, and the zombie cure is pretty much dead (get it??). Things aren’t looking good for our protags.
“The Walking Dead” (February 14, AMC)
The zombie horde is in Alexandria and the town that could have been home is about to be destroyed (Again). Guess who is about to come to make an entrance? Highly anticipated villain of the comic book series, Negan, it scheduled make his appearance in...

MTV's new fantasy series The Shannara Chronicles just premiered this week. In a recent conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, showrunners Al Gough and Miles Millar discussed the series' influences, the fantasy genre on television, and their hope for many more seasons.
Based on the novels by Terry Brooks, the series stars Austin Butler, Poppy Drayton, and Ivana Baquero as an unlikely trio tasked to save their land from demons.

MTV's new Terry Brooks fantasy series, The Shannara Chronicles, looks terrific but is disappointingly all style and no substance...
This review contains spoilers.
1.1 & 1.2 Chosen
Author and creator of the Shannara world, Terry Brooks, released his second volume of the series, The Elfstones Of Shannara in 1982. A year previously, a brand new cable channel called MTV was launched, centred on the best music videos the eighties had to offer. It’s very unlikely at that time that either of these entities, or their respective audiences, would have ever imagined crossing paths, yet thirty years later, here we are. The on-trend, image focused juggernaut MTV, having given up on playing actual music videos years ago, is now home to a television interpretation of a high-fantasy series of novels about magic and elves that started back in the seventies.

“The Shannara Chronicles” star Manu Bennett says his MTV series is better for young viewers than most things on TV, thanks to its source material. “I think we’re now dying at the hands of zombies and bleak stuff that doesn’t really fare well for our young audiences out there,” the actor said at the 2016 Television Critics Association winter press tour in Pasadena, California. “I’d much rather my kids watch something like this.” “The Shannara Chronicles,” which premiered Tuesday on MTV, is based on Terry Brooks’ series of novels, the first of which was published in 1977. You could be excused for dismissing MTV’s new fantasy epic, “The Shannara Chronicles,” as a Ya Frankenstein’s monster cobbled together from pieces of previous successful works — that is, if you didn’t know that it’s based on books written by Terry Brooks more than 30 years ago. Still, in today’s crowded marketplace full of Chosen Ones and dangerous future societies, some cynicism is to be expected. But three decades doesn’t get Brooks off the hook for what seems the most glaring influence — J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings” series. Of course, it doesn’t help that the main action.

While some people may wonder if MTV really can pull off creating a show for fans based on Terry Brooks' Shannara series — while also pulling in new viewers not familiar with the source material — my reaction to the first four episodes of “The Shannara Chronicles” was decidedly positive. I think the show has a lot going for it and, as I said in a recent review, I definitely recommend it. I do however have one issue that's been stuck in my head and since it refuses to go away, here I am. “Shannara” hopes to be a show that appeals both to fantasy and female fans. Producer and creator Al Gough says they decided to bypass much of “The Sword of Shannara” to get into “Elfstones” because he and partner Miles Millar feel the characters of Wil, Amberle, and Eretria are more relatable for teens. They also want to...

In a television landscape increasingly marked by dramatic transformations, from Netflix’s unprecedented rise on the awards circuit to FX’s rebranding as a top-tier network, MTV has been fairly (and, not to beat around the bush, disappointingly) uniform in its expectations for scripted originals: consummately photogenic stars, dialogue specifically geared toward teen audiences, and soapy storytelling short on subtlety.
Unfortunately, those same network standards grate – agonizingly so – on The Shannara Chronicles, MTV’s latest and most ambitious series to date. Adapted from the bestselling high fantasy novels by Terry Brooks, the show aims to occupy the middle ground between The Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones, spinning a fantastical yarn full of elves, demons, ancient sorcerers and magical prophecy. But instead, its jarringly anachronistic writing and overly glossy execution, clearly designed to appeal to teen audiences, leaves it stranded somewhere...

Long time Shannara fans have reason to rejoice. Thanks to the series producers Sonar Entertainment and MTV, author Terry Brooks' Shannara has come to life. Based upon his second novel, "The Elfstones of Shannara," The Shannara Chronicles is an engaging new television series that premieres on MTV on January 5. Cast with some terrific young actors it's a good bet to be a hit with MTV fans who know nothing of Brooks' novels. Shot on location in New Zealand, it has beautiful scenery, breathtaking cinematography and an impressively talented and good looking cast. (Elves are supposed to be beautiful, no?) The set design is spectacular; wait until you see the Sacred Garden and the Ellcrys.

Coming to MTV in January 2016, ‘The Shannara Chronicles’ is a new TV series based on the best-selling fantasy novels by Terry Brooks. Most of you have probably read or at least heard about the Shannara trilogy, written by Terry Brooks. The first book, The Sword of Shannara, was published back in 1977, and the first episode of the upcoming The Shannara Chronicles TV series is going to air in January of next year.
Produced by MTV, the TV series stars Ivana Baquero, Manu Bennett, Austin Butler, John Rhys-Davies, Emelia Burns, and Poppy Drayton.
We haven’t seen much about the Shannara adaptation ever since the release of the Nycc official trailer in October, but now we have two new videos. Despite the fact they are really short, there are one or two very intriguing scenes which are worth watching. But there are also words worth hearing:
"The events leading us to this moment have been unfurling for centuries. We share a destiny, a greater purpose and the sooner you accept that, the better.
