In his classic 1994 essay “How Tracy Austin Broke My Heart,” David Foster Wallace pondered why so many athlete memoirs — and tennis player memoirs in particular — fail to provide sports fans with what they really want to know. What does it feel like to fail in front of millions of people? How does a human being handle such intense pressure? What actually goes through one’s mind in those do-or-die moments where the difference between eternal glory and lifelong disappointment is one tiny miscalculation or half-second’s hesitation? Maybe, Wallace eventually concludes, the answer to that last question is “nothing much at all,” and “the real secret behind top athletes’ genius may be as esoteric and obvious and dull and profound as silence itself.”
In his two previous sports documentaries, “Senna” and “Diego Maradona,” filmmaker Asif Kapadia has gone a great distance toward disproving Wallace’s thesis, using ingeniously edited archival...

As he approaches the end of a stellar career, Roger Federer stands at an intriguing crossroads. The Swiss tennis legend is on the cusp of a momentous turning point, with his 40th birthday looming imminently and yet another Wimbledon title within reach. Recalling his storied journey at the All England Club since his first visit in 1999, Federer has witnessed both dramatic highs and heart-wrenching lows. From the legendary 1980 final between Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe, which was long considered the greatest Wimbledon championship match, to the epic 2008 final where Rafael Nadal narrowly edged out Federer in a...

Roger Federer’s Poignant Farewell To Pro Tennis Documented In ‘Twelve Final Days’ – Tribeca Festival

In men’s tennis, as in other sports, there is constant debate over which player qualifies as the Greatest of All Time. Djokovic with his unprecedented 24 Grand Slam wins? Nadal with his astonishing 14 French Open victories? Federer, the first man to win 20 Grand Slams? Or perhaps a player from an earlier era – Rod Laver – who swept all four Grand Slam titles in a calendar year, not once but twice?
The Goat debate in tennis will never be resolved. But there is broad consensus on one thing: no one has ever played the game with as much grace, as much beauty, with such effortless shot making and economy of form as the man from Basel, Switzerland – Roger Federer. It was, therefore, with enormous sadness but heartfelt appreciation that tennis fans greeted the news in 2022 that Federer, bowing to time, would retire from the sport he defined for more than 20 years.

Producer Joe Sabia first encountered tennis legend Roger Federer in 2019 for Vogue’s “73 Questions” series. Sabia enjoyed the interview and kept in touch with his team. Three years later, as Federer looked to retire from the sport as a professional player, Sabia was brought into his offices. Federer was planning to officially announce the news via his Instagram page with an audio message accompanying the post. His team pondered if Federer’s retirement should be filmed.
But Sabia responded, “Yes,” believing “it’d be a mistake not to.’”
As conversations went back and forth, the idea was that the video would be stripped back, private, under the radar, and like Federer himself, effortless. So, Sabia used two cameras, and the idea was to shoot an 8 to 12-minute film. “If Roger doesn’t want anyone to see it, I’m completely fine doing this, knowing that it’s going to be just for friends and family,...

When it comes to the Big Three who have dominated men’s tennis for the past two decades, I’ve always favored Roger Federer over rivals Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal. Federer’s game had a multi-surface brilliance and beauty that rarely got obscured by anything extraneous — off-court drama, on-court excesses. You could marvel at the reliable wizardry of a Federer performance and just assume that, in his utterly wholesome boringness, he wouldn’t let you down as a person either.
And that’s the furthest thing from an insult. Roger Federer always presented as a completely decent person and a miraculous tennis player.
So when I call Asif Kapadia and Joe Sabia’s Federer: Twelve Final Days, a new documentary premiering at Tribeca ahead of its Amazon airing, comfortably dull, that’s another way of saying that it’s probably precisely the documentary that Federer would have wanted made about himself.

Asif Kapadia co-directs backstage access to a tennis great’s final games that includes much crying but too few questions
The tears of Roger Federer, along with the tears of Rafael Nadal and even the tears of Novak Djokovic, are what finally give some point to what is otherwise a pretty bland, officially sanctioned corporate promo for the Federer brand. This documentary for Amazon Prime – co-directed by Asif Kapadia and video content producer Joe Sabia – has behind-the-scenes access, following the final 12 days in the top-flight tennis career of the legendary champion, from his announcement of retirement in 2022 to his emotional curtain-call appearance at the Laver Cup in London, named after Rod Laver, the starry new Europe-versus-the World team tournament that Federer has done so much to develop.

Game, set and match for Tudor Giurgiu, Cristian Pascariu and Tudor D. Popescu, who co-direct Nasty, a pleasingly hagiographic portrait of Romanian tennis icon Ilie Năstase. What fun tennis must have been in the 1970s, as it was on the turn from a knockabout sport into the sharp-footed profession it is today. Năstase and his contemporaries brought finesse and genius to the game, but tennis hadn’t yet been fully corrupted by corporate greed and mechanical elite athleticism. These players were hardworking and hard-partying in equal measure, and Năstase was a key ringleader for the frivolity, dating models, and canoodling on the mattresses at Studio 54.
He was also the sport’s chief antagonist a generation before John McEnroe took the mantle. Arguing with his fellow players and with the umpires. But he never questioned them when their calls were right, he insists, in one of the rare modern interview clips with Năstase himself.

Paris, May 29 (Ians) Playing as the top seed in a Grand Slam for the first time, World No.1 Carlos Alcaraz of Spain wasted little time getting his title quest underway at the French Open on Monday when he raced past Italian Flavio Cobolli 6-0, 6-2, 7-5 to reach the second round.
Italian qualifier Cobolli put up a fight in the third set and saved three match points on his own serve to hold for 4-5 against Alcaraz, then broke the Spaniard to level for 5-5.
Alcaraz then nudged ahead with a break of serve for 6-5 and this time did not falter when serving for the victory, as he started his campaign on a winning note and booked a second-round meeting with Taro Daniel.
The 20-year-old Alcaraz is the youngest player to be given the top seeding in Paris since a then-19-year-old Bjorn Borg in 1976. The Spaniard showed little...

New Delhi, April 24 (Ians) Spain’s young tennis sensation Carlos Alcaraz has said he is not planning to take over from Rafael Nadal and intends to build his “own history”.
Alcaraz capped a perfect week at the Barcelona Open on Sunday by outplaying Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-3, 6-4 with a high-quality championship match display at the Atp 500 and claimed his ninth tour-level crown and third of the season.
The Spaniard’s remarkable achievements at a young age have led to comparisons with Nadal, who like Alcaraz, clinched his maiden Grand Slam title at the age of 19.
“As I’ve always said on more than one occasion, I don’t want to take over from anyone. I feel lucky to have so many people supporting me behind me, transmitting that positive energy from the first game,” Alcaraz was quoted by Eurosport.

An early scene in Boom Boom! The World vs. Boris Becker, a new two-part documentary about the German tennis great who famously won Wimbledon at the age of 17 before going down like the Hindenburg, encapsulates what’s made the athlete such a controversial figure. Ion Tiriac, a Romanian businessman who managed Becker at the height of his powers, from 1984 to 1993, compares the athlete to “a child” tempting fate by repeatedly sticking his finger into a flame.

Prolific documentarian Alex Gibney hates liars. He hates when companies lie (Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room); he hates when religions lie (Going Clear, Mea Maxima Culpa); he hates when authority figures lie (The Inventor, Client 9).
The Rosetta Stone for Gibney’s dogmatic resistance to mendacity is The Armstrong Lie. Gibney’s irritation arises not just from the general lies that Lance Armstrong told the world, but from the lies that Lance Armstrong told him during the making of the movie, yielding a documentary about the nature of deception and self-deception.
Gibney’s new two-part Apple TV+ docuseries Boom! Boom! The World vs. Boris Becker is a complementary text to The Armstrong Lie. It’s about a revered sports icon whose falsehoods eventually led to personal disgrace. It’s structured around two extensive interviews conducted at different points in the subject’s prevarication — once in delusion and once when facing a reckoning.

Bengaluru, Feb 21 (Ians) Sumit Nagal kept the Indian hopes alive in the Bengaluru Open 2023 with an intensely-fought 7-6 (3), 5-7, 6-4 win over Ly Nam Hoang of Vietnam in the Round of 32 at the Kslta Stadium on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, two other Indians in action–Prajnesh Gunneswaran and Sd Prajwal crashed out of the Round of 32.
Prajnesh had his moments against Serbian Hamad Medjedovic but the latter was way better in the crucial moments, emerging a 6-3, 6-4 winner. Karnataka lad Prajwal could not counter Taipei’s Jason Jung and bowed out after a 2-6, 2-6 defeat.
Nagal made up for those disappointments to a certain extent, getting better of a sticky Nam Hoang. The first set drifted into tie-break after both the players traded a couple of breaks in the early part.
The Indian came up with a solid game in the tie-break to build a 6-3 lead and then grabbed the set.

When tennis champion Boris Becker entered the room for a press conference in Berlin before the world premiere of the documentary about his storied career and troubled personal life, camera shutters clicked furiously and flashes flashed. He is, after all, one of Germany’s most famous native sons and a widely loved sports legend, despite a conviction for a bankruptcy-related fraud that landed him behind bars in Britain for eight months.
“I’m 55 years old and I’m very proud of the things that I’ve done. But I’ve made mistakes,” Becker told the assembled media at the Berlin Film Festival on Sunday. “I’ve paid a heavy price for some of the things I did in my past. Today I’m a bit better for it. Hopefully a bit smarter. Maybe a bit more humble.”

Disgraced former tennis champion Boris Becker is to be profiled and interviewed in an Apple TV+ two-part doc from Oscar winners Alex Gibney and John Battsek.
The as-yet-untitled series aims to explore all aspects of the six-Grand-Slam-winning sportsman’s life, who won Wimbledon when he was just 17 but is now in prison.
Producers followed the German for three years prior to April 2022, when Becker was sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison for hiding assets and loans to avoid paying his debts, following a tumultuous period, much of which spilled out into the media.
The doc features a series of personal interviews with Becker, including an exclusive conversation with the champion the week of his sentencing, alongside members of his immediate family and tennis stars including John McEnroe, Bjorn Borg, Novak Djokovic, Mats Wilander and Michael Stich.
Celebrated doc maker Battsek’s Ventureland is co-producing with Gibney’s Jigsaw Productions and Diego Maradona producer Lorton Entertainment.

The formerly foul-mouthed champion recounts his glory days and use of ‘performance-detracting drugs’ in this watchable if uncritical documentary
The rock’n’roll bad boy of tennis is watchably if uncritically celebrated in this documentary portrait by Barney Douglas; it is a film that leaves unsolved the riddle, if it is a riddle, of John McEnroe’s confrontational on-court personality. McEnroe is an engaging raconteur: funny and disarming about his excessive drug use – specifically cocaine – under the influence of Dionysiac sensualist and Studio 54-habitué Vitas Gerulaitis back in the good old days of the wooden racket and the disco glitter ball. It surely exacerbated his alarming temper. “People today use performance-enhancing drugs,” says McEnroe. “We used performance-detracting drugs.” And as for drugs not being good for you, McEnroe cheerfully says: “They were good so you can appreciate your life a little more …” McEnroe can still summon a snarl when...

Exclusive: Calabasas Films + Media and Sterling Road Films are partnering to produce the first official documentary about former tennis player and actor Vijay Amritraj.
Directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Sami Khan (St. Louis Superman), the currently untitled feature is being executive-produced by Calabasas partners Kapil Mahendra and Paul Beahan, alongside Prakash Amritraj and Dhaval Desai.
The documentary will chart Amritraj’s rise from his childhood in India, overcoming serious health issues, to his emergence as a top player in the 1970s and 1980s, defeating Jimmy Connors, Bjorn Borg, and John McEnroe in their primes.
Along with older brother Anand, Vijay Amritraj was an integral part of the Indian team that boycotted the 1974 Davis Cup Finals against South Africa to protest Apartheid. Vijay is also the older brother of Ashok Amritraj (himself a former tennis player), the long-time film producer who is currently CEO of Hyde Park Entertainment and was formerly CEO of National Geographic Films.

"If I wanted to be like my idols, I did learn you gotta be a bit of a lunatic out there." Dogwoof has unveiled an official trailer for a sports biopic documentary called McEnroe, from filmmaker Barney Douglas. This is premiering later this week at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival, hence the new trailer out now. Set over one New York night, McEnroe follows the iconic tennis player John McEnroe as he journeys into memory to recall the highs and lows of his epic career in this neon-infused, archive-blended documentary. Featuring icons such as Billie Jean King, Bjorn Borg, and Keith Richards, the film brings to life a golden age of tennis and the 80's excess of John’s hometown: New York City. Beyond John's tennis legacy (his combined 149 titles still rank as the highest in the Men's Open era), John's story grows to become a search for connection, a journey...

Italian producer Domenico Procacci, after shepherding more than 100 movies and several TV series, including Netflix’s upcoming Elena Ferrante adaptation “The Lying Life of Adults,” via his Fandango shingle, is debuting as a director with six-part documentary series “The Team.” Variety speaks to Procacci exclusively about what prompted him to go behind the camera for what he says is just a one-off experience as a director, and debuts the English-language subtitled version of the trailer, above.
The project is a deeply researched reconstruction of the complex – and sometimes comical – dynamics behind the Italian tennis team that won the 1976 Davis Cup and reached the finals for this trophy three other times between 1976 and 1980.
In “The Team,” which is being presented as a work-in-progress at the Torino Film Festival, the protagonists are the team’s players, Adriano Panatta, Corrado Barazzutti, Paolo Bertolucci, Tonino Zugarelli, and its captain, Italian tennis legend Nicola Pietrangeli.

Starring newcomer Erik Enge, Black Spark Film’s Tigers tells the extraordinary true story of Swedish soccer star Martin Bengtsson, who made his international debut at just 17 years old. In stark contrast to many other sporting movies, which tend to focus on stories of triumph over adversity, Ronnie Sandahl’s movie from Black Spark Film examines the true cost of success in the world of professional football and the pressures that almost cost Bengtsson his life.
Accompanied by cast members Alfred Enoch, who plays Bengtsson’s American teammate Ryan, and Frida Gustavsson, who plays his model girlfriend Vibeke, Sandahl said during Deadline’s Contenders Film: International event that Sweden’s Oscar entry this year had been a long time in the planning.
“It’s been with me for a number of years,” he said. “I met Martin Bengtsson when we were both in our early 20s, coming out with our books.

Despite his running out of the house earlier than usual without any explanation, however, there’s nothing to make her think something is wrong until a trip to the drugstore exposes a freeze on their finances. One credit card won’t work. Then another. The Atm won’t accept her sign-in and François still isn’t picking up his phone. Alice has no other option but to set a meeting with the bank and figure...

With this year’s French Open recently concluding, it’s the opportune time to watch one of cinema’s greatest sports documentaries. Capturing the annual tennis event 40 years ago, Muhammed Ali, the Greatest director William Klein’s The Open takes an intimate look at the 1981 French Open with John McEnroe, Chris Evert, Yannick Noah, Arthur Ashe, Martina Navratilova, and Björn Borg. Set to open virtually at Metrograph starting this Friday, we’re pleased to present the exclusive trailer.
As the official synopsis reads, “In 1981, Klein and three camera crews were given exclusive, unprecedented access to the tournament for the first time in its 90-year history, and using that doorway into locker rooms, TV studios, and players’ boxes, he shot the ultimate behind-the-scenes look at the 1981 French Open. John McEnroe: In the Realm of Perfection is an immersive, impressive and elegant ethnographic film essay that revisits 16mm footage of John McEnroe during the 1984 Roland-Garros French Open. The fiery, left-handed McEnroe was then ranked the world’s number one player and had several singles and doubles Grand Slam titles to his name. Breezing through the early stages of the tournament playing a sublime form of tennis that elevated him far above his mere mortal peers, he seemed on an unstoppable path to certain victory. Meeting the implacable Ivan Lendl in the final, a rival similar in calm, cool and collected temperament to old nemesis Björn Borg, McEnroe raced into a two sets to love lead but then began to psychologically unravel, losing control of his emotions and ultimately gifting Lendl, whom he had accused of being ‘chicken’ earlier in the match, an unlikely comeback and first Grand Slam title.

Thanks to strong word of mouth, John Krasinski’s horror film “A Quiet Place” is looking to top the box office for the second weekend in a row with $34 million from 3,589 domestic locations.
Just behind the SXSW success story is Warner Bros.-New Line’s “Rampage” with $32 million from 4,101 sites. Friday’s estimates had adjusted the Dwayne Johnson-starrer’s debut to the $27-$32 million range, with earlier tracking forecasting an opening between $35 and $40 million. “Rampage” earned $11.5 million its opening Friday, including $2.4 million from Thursday previews.
“Rampage” garnered $27.1 million on Friday from 61 markets and 38,100 screens. With that, the film has earned a cumulative $36.7 million overseas, opening at No. 1 in China as Warner Bros.’ third-highest debut in the country. Even with the international numbers, the film has a ways to go to recoup its $120 million production budget. Word of mouth could give it a push in the coming weeks, however...

Juan Martin del Potro just ruined the match-up everyone wanted to see at the 2017 Us Open—a semi-final pitting Rafa Nadal against Roger Federer. Anyone who's ever psyched themselves out prepping for a game, any game – life included – should take a look at Borg vs. McEnroe. There's a lesson to be learned in watching two tennis titans go at it in a movie dished out for maximum entertainment and a sneaky sense of unease. It's Wimbledon, 1980, and Swedish champion Björn Borg (Sverrir Gudnason) is going for a record-breaking fifth Wimbledon title against bratty American newcomer John McEnroe (Shia Labeouf). Ancient history? Maybe. Tennis buffs all know how it turned out. Uninitiated millennials, not so much.

MaryAnn’s quick take… Excruciatingly suspenseful and unexpectedly moving portrait of the on-court rivalry between the two great tennis players… and the intriguing secret layer to the public dynamic between them. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): not a sports fan
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto) women’s participation in this film

If you don’t already know who won the men’s singles tennis championship at Wimbledon in 1980, then for the sake of your own entertainment, try not to find out before you see Borg vs McEnroe, which is absolutely worth your time even if you don’t give a fig about tennis. I couldn’t possibly care less about the sport, and I nevertheless found this depiction of that Wimbledon final match — considered by some to be the finest tennis game ever — to be incredibly tense and gripping.

Every once in a while, the real world delivers a barn burner so dramatic that it would get dinged as pure contrivance if a screenwriter invented it. For the game of tennis, that magic moment arrived at Wimbledon in 1980, with the final match of the Men’s Singles championship. On one side of the net was Björn Borg,…
