- His philosophy of clean living, exercise and healthy eating (laid out in his books "Barefeet and Good Things to Eat" and "The Gypsy in Me") attracted thousands of fans worldwide and netted him 25 appearances on the Steve Allen Show in the early 1960s. Inspired by the German "Naturmensch" movement, Boots and a "tribe" of fellow bohemians spent the 1940s living off the land in Tahquitz Canyon near Palm Springs, sleeping in caves and trees and bathing in waterfalls.
- As a regular on the Steve Allen show, he would swing onto the stage on a rope, long hair flying, and persuade Allen to help him make organic juices and do exercises with him.
- Self proclaimed "Clown Prince of Health."
- From the sidelines at USC football games, he was seen in outlandish outfits topped with a cardboard crown chanting "Don't panic, go organic, get in cahoots with Gypsy Boots." In his 70s he had groupies of young fitness conscious women.
- Under his real name Robert Bootzin, appeared as a contestant on an episode of Groucho Marx TV show You Bet Your Life in the fifties.
