Dutch actress Sylvia Kristel, best known for the 1974 erotic French film "Emmanuelle," has passed away at the age of 60, her agent tells the Afp. The actress had been suffering from throat and lung cancer and had sustained a stroke back in July.
"Emmanuelle" starred Kristel and chronicled the life of a housewife in an open marriage. It spawned several sequels, which also starred Kristel in the title role. The original was one of the first erotic movies to be shown in mainstream cinemas; Kristel attributed its success to the changing censorship laws of the era.
Following the success of the first three "Emmanuelle" movies, Kristel spent several years in Hollywood, appearing in "The Concorde: Airport '79" alongside Robert Wagner and "Private Lessons" opposite Howard Hesseman.
