When an all-star cast of musicians came together to rehearse their salute to Joni Mitchell for a Washington, D.C. tribute concert in February, in honor of her being the latest annual recipient of the Gershwin Prize for songwriting, executive producer Ken Ehrlich had an early epiphany about where Marcus Mumford’s cover of “Carey” should go. “During the rehearsal, it was obvious to me: that was the opening number.”
As you watch the remainder of “Joni Mitchell: The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song,” though — as it premieres on PBS tonight, and is available thereafter for streaming on PBS.org and the PBS app — you won’t see Mumford disappearing from the stage for very many extended periods. Mumford has been part of the parties at Mitchell’s home the last couple of years, and participated in the “Joni jam” at the Newport Folk Festival last summer,...

When Bob Dylan’s Time Out of Mind hit shelves on Sept. 30, 1997, it was hailed by fans and critics as his best work in decades. The Daniel Lanois-produced LP won a Grammy for Album of the Year, kickstarted an incredible period of renewed vitality for Dylan, and forever silenced any doubters who felt he’d never recapture the magic of his early years. Just about the only person unhappy with the album was Bob Dylan himself.

Music keeps this world going round, and as such, this year's Grammy Awards included some of the fiercest competition in years! On Sunday, musicians like Megan Thee Stallion, Brittany Howard of Alabama Shakes fame, Dua Lipa, and more came together to celebrate one of the most fascinating years in music. Some have earned epic nominations, like Beyoncé racking up nine nods and being crowned the most-nominated artist of the year, or Roddy Ricch and Taylor Swift earning six nominations each. Others are there to pull out on the stops onstage and show us the best of their best with their performances.
At 9 years old, Blue Ivy Carter became the second youngest Grammy winner for her contributions to mom Beyoncé's "Brown Skin Girl" video. It seems Beyoncé might be the key to winning Grammys, as Megan Thee Stallion also took home one for best rap performance...

Chick Corea died on February 9, 2021, due to “a rare form of cancer which was only discovered very recently,” as was announced on social media. He was 79-years-old, and leaves behind a legacy as a pioneer of jazz fusion, but his musical output never stopped — from his earlier career working with Miles Davis all the way to his 2020 double album “Plays.” He’s one of the biggest winners in the history of the Grammys, and he could actually increase that total this year, albeit posthumously.
His first recognition from the recording academy came in 1974 with a pair of nominations: Best Instrumental Arrangement (“Spain”) and Best Jazz Performance by a Group (“Light as a Feather” with his band Return to Forever). He didn’t win those prizes, but that’s okay. Over the next 46 years he accumulated 23 Grammys out of a total 67 nominations. That places him eighth on the list of the all-time biggest winners.

Jazz is a web. Because of the genre’s inherently collaborative, often mix-and-match nature, singling out a supporting player we like on a given record might lead us to dozens of other sessions featuring that same artist in various contexts. Or we might pick up a certain current in the music that crops up elsewhere, unifying albums that seemed to have little else in common. In 2020, when connection of any kind was scarce, these sorts of musical hyperlinks seemed all the more precious, a way to map and marvel at...

Norah Jones‘ eleventh studio album, Pick Me Up Off the Floor, is out now. On Friday, the singer-songwriter and pianist shared a new music video, “To Live,” alongside the LP’s release.
Filmed in quarantine, the clip shows a stylized Jones and several bandmembers — drummer Nate Smith, bassist Jesse Murphy, trumpeter Dave Guy and tenor saxophonist Leon Michels — performing the album track in their respective homes.
“If love is the answer/In front of my face/Then I’ll live in this moment/And find my true place,” Jones sings over the swinging blues track.

Norah Jones wonders if it’s possible too hit the reset button on her brooding song, “Begin Again,” the title-track from her new collection of singles, out today, April 12th.

Given the jazz-inflected complexities and somber, introspective tone of Joni Mitchell’s most vibrant work, the skill and magnetism of the artists who took the stage on the first of two nights celebrating her 75th birthday at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion at L.A.’s the Music Center felt all the more impressive. Over the course of a breathless two-and-a-half hours, a carousel of musicians — some of her decades-old familiars like Graham Nash and James Taylor, others fresher talents like Brandi Carlile and Norah Jones — took turns paying tribute to...

Norah Jones gave a strong performance of her new politically charged song, "Flipside," on The Tonight Show Wednesday.
Jones and her backing band moved between the cut's smoky soul verses and blazing piano rock chorus, even throwing in a heavy breakdown before unloading the last rousing hook. As always, Jones' deft piano and vocals led the performance, especially when she was joined by her backup singers for some exalted harmonies.
Upon the release of "Flipside," Jones said the song was inspired by the political and social tumult of the past few years.

Daniel Lanois's Black Dub Webster Hall, NYC
Brian Blade is God! (Nod to Mr. Clapton's graffitti homage.) If there is a better drummer on the planet playing with a better touring band, I want to know about it right now. Last night at Webster Hall, Black Dub killed it. They wiped the floor of any and all bands playing any borough of New York City on this particular evening. And believe me, there was plenty of competition. But as we all know, competition for an audience's attention tends to bring out the best in musicians. And Lanois's insanely tight quartet was more than up to that task and at the peak of its collective prowess.

Black Dub, the enigmatically eclectic new quartet helmed by guitarist and Grammy award-winning producer Daniel Lanois, has released their self-titled debut album.
The band features Lanois on guitar, New Orleans virtuoso Brian Blade on drums, lead singer Trixie Whitley, the beautiful 22-year-old daughter of the late, great Texas bluesman, Chris Whitley, and rounding out the quartet is famed Louisiana bass player Daryl Johnson.
Watch the group interviews and performing their single "Surely"!
