Sloyan will star opposite director/star Ward Roberts.

"I'm not from Hell, I'm from Indiana!" A festival promo trailer crashes in for an indie sci-fi comedy called Invaders From Proxima B, made by actor / filmmaker Ward Roberts. It's premiering in the next week at the 2023 Austin Film Festival in Texas, though has no other release dates set - it'll be touring at more fests. When a cute, wise-cracking alien from Proxima B named Chuck crash lands in their backyard, the Jankins family must work together to save their new fuzzy friend from a dangerous array of weirdos that show up in hot pursuit. The stakes couldn't be higher for Chuck, the Jankins, and maybe even all of planet Earth. It's super wacky – when the puppet alien shows up gets really fun. Reminds me of the kind of mega low budget, kooky and amusing early films the Duplass Bros or Kevin Smith made early on. Ward Roberts also stars with Samantha Sloyan,...

The Amazon horror anthology series “Them” centers on a Black family that experiences terror after moving to a white neighborhood in 1950s Compton. The horror comes in both realistic and supernatural forms as Henry and Lucky Emory battle racist neighbors and otherworldly creatures who intend to drive them out of Compton, if not kill them outright. Scroll down to watch our exclusive interviews with six Emmy contenders from the limited series.
“Them” stars Ashley Thomas and Deborah Ayorinde as Henry and Lucky, while Shahadi Wright Joseph and Melody Hurd play their daughters, who are also haunted by evil spirits. Alison Pill plays Betty, a neighbor of the Emorys who leads the charge in trying to chase them out of their community. Ryan Kwanten rounds out the main cast as George, the milkman whose flirtations with Betty develop into something far more sinister. Like many domestic dramas set in the 1950s,...

For their first outings as television creators, Ethan Hawke and Little Marvin held nothing back.
Hawke acquired the rights to James McBride’s novel “The Good Lord Bird” for the Showtime adaptation. He also wrote scripts, executive produced and starred as abolitionist John Brown, approaching history with a witty bent. Meanwhile, Little Marvin blended classic horror genre elements with the all-too-real terror of otherness and racism when a Black family moves into a predominantly white neighborhood in “Them” for Amazon Prime Video
Both men dabbled in the past for these limited series, with “The Good Lord Bird” set in the 1850s and “Them” set a century later, in the 1950s. But it was their very modern mindsets about the subject matter, as well as the importance of teamwork with their casts and production crews, that helped inspire such passionate responses to the projects.
Here, they talk about what kind of art inspires them,...

This Lucifer review contains spoilers. We have a spoiler free review here if you prefer.
Lucifer Season 5 Episode 1
It’s been over a year since the endearing Prince of Darkness last graced the small screen, but the fifth season premiere of Netflix’s Lucifer quickly reminds fans of the fantasy police procedural why they’re so inexorably drawn to the show. After last season’s devastatingly emotional conclusion, “Really Sad Devil Guy” brings back an old foe whose presence allows the Devil and the detective to take the first steps toward what viewers hope will be a short-lived separation.
Lee (Jeremiah Birkett) returns as the thief with a heart of gold, and some gold bars, money, and jewels to go along with it, thanks to Lucifer’s prior willingness to give the small-time criminal a second chance in life. It remains comforting to see Hell’s gatekeeper wearing his familiar...

Our favorite devil has returned.
After that heartbreaking end to season four, Lucifer has returned to hell.
He is soon reunited with an old face we thought we might not have seen again.
In Lucifer Season 5 Episode 1, Lucifer meets our old friend, Lee (Aka "Mr. Said Out Bitch") in his own hell loop. Poor Jeremiah Birkett can't seem to return to the show without ending up in his underwear somehow.
Some of us fans have enjoyed the quick guest spots Birkett has had on the show since season two, and wished he could get a bigger role in the show. In a way, that prayer was answered.
Except this time, Lee is dead.
Lucifer realizes Lee was killed in LA and comes to the conclusion Chloe must be investigating his murder. Missing Chloe, he decides he will let Lee take a break from his hell loop so he can help...

Natalie Portman has a long history with space.
She’s been to a galaxy far, far away in “Star Wars,” traveled between worlds for “Thor,” and now she’s playing an astronaut in “Lucy in the Sky.” But first, she had to put on the spacesuit.
“It was really complicated. I was shocked at how many people it required,” she told Variety at the film’s premiere on Wednesday night at Fox Studios in Los Angeles. “The real ones weigh like 300 pounds — of course, not the movie one — but it was interesting to inform the physicality. They have to be quite strong because even though it’s weightless in space, the force pressing against you is so extreme. It was really wild and exciting and kind of like a childhood dream come true.”
Portman’s co-star Jeremiah Birkett agreed, adding that the slo-mo space walk came easy because it was...

Earlier, we posted a review of the action comedy Dust Up, a neo-western with shades of Quentin Tarantino, Sergio Leone, and Grindhouse films. The film was written and directed by Ward Roberts (Little Big Top), and can be found on VOD and PPV, and has been out since October and November. What follows is FM’s interview with Ward: our discussion about his influences, his hilarious cast, the case of the missing miniature pony, and the tenacity it takes to be an independent filmmaker.
Read our rave review here and be sure to check it out on VOD.
FM: I always ask this because I’m always curious. What kinds of films, or TV, or books did you grow up on? What inspired you to become a filmmaker?
Ward Roberts: You know, I would say, watching Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Superman, those are my very earliest cinematic influences.

As a dumb kid, I spent considerable time camped out in front of cable TV. The programming I begrudgingly missed for school or basic hygiene, I captured with my Vcr set to record the maximum hours allotted on a standard VHS tape.
Poorer quality, sure, but it was suitable for the six hours worth of garbage movies and random junk I recorded on a daily basis. I was, however, able to discover some pretty nifty shit during that wondrous time; films like The Zero Boys, Hunter's Blood, Neon Maniacs, Alligator, Quiet Cool, Waxwork, and Dudes remain staples of my diet to this day. Today, I'm a dumb grown-up, and at the risk of this sounding like an Abe Simpson rant, I feel sorry for kids growing up today. I really do. My growth...

His life gets interesting with the arrival of April (Sarah Lassez), an eccentric little cutie whose only apparent possession is a book locked in a box that she carries everywhere she goes. Justin is immediately smitten with her, and before long she moves in and all seems right with the world.
