Madrid-based Begin Again Films has nabbed Santiago Maza’s Mexican documentary “State of Silence,” produced by Diego Luna and La Corriente del Golfo, the shingle he runs with Gael García Bernal.
The sales agency and distributor, which acquired international rights with the exception of North America and Latin America, has also unveiled the film’s first trailer.
“State of Silence,” which traces the harrowing stories of four journalists who risk their lives in pursuit of truth and transparency in Mexico, will have its world premiere simultaneously this month at the Tribeca and Guadalajara Film Festivals before competing at the Sheffield Film Festival for its European premiere.
Santiago Maza
Detailing the endangered state of press freedom in Mexico, the documentary follows the journalists’ journeys as they navigate treacherous terrain in their effort to shed light on the enduring suffering and anxiety experienced by their fellow citizens two decades after the so-called war on drugs began.

Begin Again Films, based in Madrid, is gearing up for a strong start to 2024, having acquired international sales rights for “La Parra,” a film directed by Alberto Gracia.
The title has been selected to compete in the main Tiger Competition at the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR), marking its debut in one of the year’s earliest festivals. Gloria Bretones and Belén Bernuy, co-founders of the sales agent and distributor, have built around a focus on promoting auteur-driven works, particularly those from Spanish filmmakers.
“We have been following Alberto’s career as an artist and filmmaker for a long time, and we knew that this film would be very special. We are not wrong.” said Gloria Bretones.
“The story told in ‘La Parra’ could have happened in any city in the world with the same problems. It is a local story, from Alberto’s personal perspective, and at the same time,...

Larry Levene-produced “3 Astronauts,” Jorge Dorado and Ivan Sainz-Pardo’s “The Road of Life” and Gsus López’s “Story at Dawn” figure among the seven finalists at the fifth edition of Pitchbox, a films-in-development showcase organized in Madrid by online platform Filmarket Hub. Taking place May 22, the event encourages new film talent discovery — and it gives Madrid a new line in co-production forums as well.
The projects will be pitched in front of a select group of executives from key Spain-based film companies, among them Atresmedia Cine, Telecinco Cinema, Rtve, Avalon, DeAPlaneta, TriPictures and Dynamo. After the pitch fest, the participants meet in a networking session.
“The companies can know first-hand a wide-ranging project selection which has already been filtered and analyzed, giving them direct access to the best emerging talent through an entertaining event format,” says Filmarket Hub co-founder Bernardo Gómez.
