When daughter Emma (Miranda Cosgrove) turns up out of the blue to reveal she’s engaged, Lana (Brooke Shields) can’t believe what she’s hearing. The adventure takes them to a luxury resort in Phuket, where Emma and her fiance Rj (Sean Teale) have planned the entire wedding down to the finest detail. What Lana doesn’t realize is who Rj’s father is, learning that Will (Benjamin Bratt) was the man who broke her heart years ago.
It only takes a few moments to realize why any actor would have signed up to film Mother of the Bride without so much as reading a script. The movie is essentially an all-expenses-paid jolly, with its glittering cast getting to hang out at a luxurious resort most could...

On paper, Brooke Shields and Miranda Cosgrove share a lot in common. They both began their professional careers as child models who went on to find early success as actors. While Shields rose to fame in late-’70s and ’80s films (Pretty Baby, The Blue Lagoon, Endless Love), Cosgrove made a name for herself in the aughts on small-screen sitcoms (iCarly, Drake & Josh). As young women growing up in Hollywood, they both became cultural touchstones for their respective generations but, in turn, were forced to weather intense scrutiny under the limelight.
In that respect, it seems particularly fitting that Shields and Cosgrove would team up to play mother and daughter in Mother of the Bride, which launched Thursday on Netflix. Directed by Mark Waters (Mean Girls, Freaky Friday) and written by Robin Bernheim (The Princess Switch), the breezy new romantic comedy follows Shields’ Lana, a widowed single mother and world-renowned...

‘Mother of the Bride’ Review: Brooke Shields Says I Do to Netflix’s Aggressively Inoffensive Rom-Com
After “Ticket to Paradise” and “Shotgun Wedding” showed us the different ways in which calamity ensues when planning weddings abroad, Netflix releases “Mother of the Bride,” which combines the essential elements of both those recent romantic comedies into one passable package. The far-off setting emphasizes the lavish and luxe, though the narrative is cheaply woven and fairly threadbare. While “Mean Girls” director Mark Waters’ latest fails to add anything unique to the conversation, it does scrounge up a modest amount of heart when it comes to its saccharine sweet message of never giving up on happily ever after.
Mere seconds after her extravagant proposal, Emma (Miranda Cosgrove) begins fretting to her fiancé Rj (Sean Teale) about how to frame their engagement to her judgmental widowed mom Dr. Lana Winslow (Brooke Shields), who doesn’t even know her only child has a steady beau. Cue zany, plucky score. Mom’s been busy saving the world,...

Weddings are always social minefields. But when your daughter is marrying your ex’s son? How do you assign that seating chart?
Brooke Shields is about to find out in Mother of the Bride, a new rom-com directed by Mark Waters from a script by Robin Bernheim, who penned the Princess Switch trilogy. Castle for Christmas star Shields will appear alongside an all-star ensemble of wedding attendants in the nuptial slapstick comedy, and we’ve got all the hot wedding gossip you could possibly ask for.
“It was a nice film because it was like an actual destination wedding where you really have nobody to hang out with but the other people in the wedding,” director Waters says of the production, which filmed in Thailand. “We were all living in the same hotels and going to the same restaurant, so everyone naturally became friends.”

So far in 2024, Netflix hasn't had much luck when it comes to romantic comedies. The Irish Wish, starring Lindsay Lohan, which was one of the most anticipated premieres of the genre, ended up being a disappointment for many viewers.
Now it can be expected that people will approach Netflix’s rom coms with a pinch of salt, but perhaps Mother of the Bride will be enough to convince audiences to lower their guard again. At the very least, the film is already doing a great job by covering the basis of several generations through its casting choices.
Is Mother of the Bride Worth Watching?
The romantic comedy starring The Blue Lagoon lead Brooke Shields and the Nickelodeon household name known to all 00's kids, Miranda Cosgrove, will tell the story of a magical wedding ruined by circumstances that make it almost impossible. The film falls into the same realm as Mamma Mia,...

Vanessa Hudgens is a triple threat in the new trailer for Netflix’s “The Princess Switch 2: Switched Again,” set to premiere on Nov. 19.
In “The Princess Switch” sequel, Hudgens will not only reprise her lead roles of Duchess Margaret and Princess Stacy, but also portray a third doppelganger, Margaret’s cousin Fiona. When Margaret unexpectedly inherits the throne to Montenaro, she also finds trouble in her long-distance relationship with her boyfriend, Kevin. Princess Stacy of Belgravia comes to the rescue, stepping in to help save the Duchess’ relationship.
“After I read it I thought, ‘Ooh man, this is going to be a lot of work,'” Hudgens told Entertainment Weekly. “Three of me? Me, myself, and I! I was very excited to create yet another character and had such a blast doing so. I was told they wrote in a new character but I had no idea how much fun it would actually be.
