John Hurt’s final screen role is a saving grace in this film, which otherwise lacks action or mystery
John Hurt made his final screen appearance in this unfortunately rather ropey film, destined to be blearily viewed on a thousand long-haul flights or channel-hoppingly glimpsed on your way past ITV4. He has a cameo as Mossad intelligence chief Miki in what is an old-school spy thriller, not far from the world of Frederick Forsyth with its exiled, grey-haired former SS officers prosecuting their own sinister interests in the Middle East. It is adapted from a 1977 airport bestseller by Howard Kaplan, but updated to the brink of the modern age by being set in 1989, just as the Berlin wall was falling.
The director is the former producer and talent management exec Daniel Zelik Berk, who has his own footnote in movie history as the man who in the 90s introduced John Travolta to Quentin Tarantino.

Set during the weeks following the 1989 fall of the Berlin Wall, “Damascus Cover” is, in the strictest sense of the term, a period piece. But Daniel Zelik Berk’s low-key drama actually plays like a throwback to an earlier era — specifically, the mid-to-late 1960s, the heyday of Cold War thrillers in which grim, unglamorous and very un-Bondian secret agents dodged bullets and endured betrayals while playing spy games for mortal stakes. Indeed, this film may have a slight nostalgic appeal for anyone who fondly recalls such ‘60s cloak-and-dagger fare as “Funeral in Berlin” (which “Damascus Cover” periodically recalls), “The Quiller Memorandum” and “The Deadly Affair.” Unfortunately, Berk’s movie is too plodding and predictable to generate anything more than a modest level of suspense; worse, it lacks enough excitement to qualify even as instantly forgettable popcorn entertainment.

I've got a slick trailer here for a new upcoming spy thriller called Damascus Cover, which stars Jonathan Rhys Meyers. It looks like a decent, well-made film with a story that will have plenty of twists and turns and nefarious characters..
Ari Ben-Sion (Meyers), haunted by the death of his son, is assigned by the Mossad to smuggle a chemical weapons scientist out of Syria. Within days his mission goes wrong. To survive Ari reaches out to a deep cover agent code named, The Angel. He soon discovers that he is a pawn in a much bigger plan.
I'll give the film a shot because I enjoy watching spy thrillers. The cast also includes Olivia Thirlby, John Hurt, Navid Negahban, Tsahi Halevi, Jürgen Prochnow, Igal Naor and Wolf Kahler.
The movie was helmed by Daniel Zelik Berk, who is a producer making his feature directorial debut. The movie will be...

"Lying to everyone is difficult - but my life depends on keeping the two worlds separate." Vertical Ent. has debuted the first official trailer for a spy thriller titled Damascus Cover, starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers as an undercover agent working for the Mossad. He is sent to Syria to smuggle a chemical weapons scientist out of the country, but encounters many problems along the way including love and treason. The cast also includes Olivia Thirlby, John Hurt (before he passed away), Navid Negahban, Tsahi Halevi, Jürgen Prochnow, Igal Naor and Wolf Kahler. This looks like a fairly typical spy romance mystery thriller, with some big twists and nefarious characters. I'm curious, but not completely sold on it yet. Take a look below. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Daniel Zelik Berk's Damascus Cover, direct from YouTube: Ari Ben-Sion (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), haunted by the death of his son,...

As far as “do it yourself” indie gorefests go, Mike Mendez’s Don’t Kill It is townsfolk-slaughtering lunacy. A lofty premise executed on a shoestring budget, ambitious in its want to blow genre fans away. This is a twisted, death-dealing endurance test with blood oozing from every possible opening, no matter how fake said blood looks, feels, or tastes. Writers Dan Berk and Robert Olsen mold a demonic possession story into slasher mayhem, and even convince psycho-Swede Dolph Lundgren to come along for the ride. Screaming ghoulies, a mumbling hero and enough prosthetic limbs to fill a Halloween decoration store – what else do you need? Maybe a few more dollars, but who doesn’t these days?
Lundgren stars as Jebediah Woodley, a traveling demon hunter who ends up in Chickory Creek, Mississippi. It’s here where an age-old tormentor is released from his jar-like tomb, only to begin killing the Chickory natives.

With the 65th Berlin Film festival primed to kick off later this week, we can readily expect studio execs to offer up their movies in a bid to secure those all-important distribution rights. And of those attendees is Daniel Zelik Berk’s Damascus Cover, which recently tapped The Tudors star Jonathan Rhys Meyers for the lead role.
Based on Howard Kaplan’s eponymous novel, the film will tell the true-life tale of a veteran spy (Rhys Meyers) who infiltrates a dangerous area in Syria in order to smuggle a chemical weapons scientist and his family out of the country. However, not all is what it seems after our protagonist partner is Awol before the mission can even begin, leaving Rhys Meyer’s character stranded and, in what is perhaps the movie’s most interesting sub-plot, caught in the midst of a possible conspiracy theory.

Jonathan Rhys Meyers will star in Damascus Cover.
The actor was announced for the Middle East spy thriller alongside a cast including Olivia Thirlby, John Hurt, Igal Naor and Navid Negahban.
Daniel Berk (Sometimes They Come Back... for More) will direct the film based on Howard Kaplan's 1977 novel.
The film is based on true events, and set in 1989 as the Berlin Wall falls.
It centres around a spy in Syria attempting to smuggle a chemical weapons scientist and his family out of the country.
"I'm enormously excited about this role," said Meyers.
"This was a hugely significant time in the conflict in the Middle East, post-Cold War and with the collapse of the Berlin Wall, when an amount of spies were redeployed to the Middle East, where the theatre of covert operations would now take precedence."
The actor will next be seen in Roland Emmerich's gay rights movie Stonewall.
