The music industry is a harsh landscape. If you’re not careful, it will chew you up and spit you out. While some artists dream of fame, fortune, and immortality, executives see artists as cogs in a machine. If a suit can squeeze you for all you’re worth, they’ll do so without thinking twice. If any band knows this unfortunate cycle, it’s the German R&b act Milli Vanilli, who fell from grace after rising above the stars and getting exposed as industry puppets. Vertical welcomes to the stage Simon Verhoeven’s Girl You Know It’s True trailer, depicting the rise and fall of Milli Vanilli.
Here’s the official synopsis for Girl You Know It’s True:

WarnerMedia Germany has confirmed that Ricky Gervais is among the cast of its comedy series Greenlight – German Genius, which is now shooting in Berlin.
The eight-part TV satire stars Kida Khodr Ramadan (4 Blocks) as himself. It recounts a dramatized version of events after Ramadan’s real-life Twitter exchange with Gervais in 2018, in which the British comedian praised Ramadan’s performance in 4 Blocks.
In Greenlight, Ramadan convinces Gervais to give him the rights for a German adaptation of Extras. However, as he attempts to progress the show to production, he comes up against the fact that the Germans aren’t particularly known for their humor, and that there are not many international stars in the country.

Post-apocalyptic adventure series “Tribes of Europa,” which bows Friday on Netflix, is the latest sci-fi/fantasy show out of Germany, where the genre is heating up.
Created by Philip Koch and produced by Wiedemann & Berg Television, the company behind Netflix hit “Dark,” “Tribes of Europa” follows three siblings as they struggle to survive in a new Europe emerging from cataclysm. Henriette Confurius, Emilio Sakraya (“Warrior Nun”), David Ali Rashed and Oliver Masucci (“Enfant Terrible”) star.
Set in 2074, the story unfolds in a land divided into micro-states and tribes — some peaceful, others bloodthirsty.
It was 2016’s Brexit referendum that inspired the series, Koch tells Variety. As a supporter of the European Union, Koch found the decision “very shocking.”
Since then, however, the pandemic, a growing political divide in the U.S., not to mention the Capitol Insurrection in Washington, D.C., have made the premise of a show about the collapse...

With depictions of pandemic catastrophes, war, failing empires, the divide between rich and poor, shooting rampages and massive power outages, Germany’s newest TV shows appear to reflect the current apocalyptic zeitgeist.
German broadcasters and streaming services alike are going heavy on suspense, crime, psychological thrillers, action and adventure, often colored by themes of societal disruption and armed conflict.
Showrunner Christian Alvart (“Dogs of Berlin”) was in production with Zdf Enterprise’s new series “Sløborn” well before the Covid-19 pandemic but the storyline was eerily prescient: A community on the North Sea island of Sløborn is slowly devastated when a deadly virus begins killing residents while being largely ignored by most of the population until it’s too late. Alvart says he wanted to make a series about a crisis that occurs because people are too occupied with their daily lives to take the situation seriously.

W&b Television, the German indie behind Netflix show Dark and the hit German drama 4 Blocks, has been commissioned to make a series tracing the beginnings of German hip-hop for TNT Serie.
Turner Germany’s series channel has ordered six-part series Almost Fly, which will be written and directed by Florian Gaag, who made the 2006 graffiti movement feature documentary Wholetrain.
Almost Fly is set in 1990 after the fall of the Berlin wall and centers on three schoolmates with big dreams whose lives are changed when they are introduced to hip-hop through a nearby U.S. Army base.
Hannes Heyelmann, managing director of the WarnerMedia channels in Germany, said: “With Almost Fly we are exploring a coming-of-age story in a contemporary historical context, capturing the lifestyle of the early 90s for the first time.”
The show will go into production in summer next year. Executive producers are Quirin Berg, Max Wiedemann and Elena Gruschka,...

Leonine has acquired “Dark” producer W&b TV from Endemol Shine. Fledgling German studio Leonine had already bought Wiedemann & Berg Film and established itself as a Munich-based movies, TV, and digital production and distribution group.
It has now added the W&b TV unit to its roster. The production company is behind several big German dramas that have resonated internationally. It makes Netflix drama “Dark,” TNT’s first German original, “4 Blocks,” and Sky Deutschland series “Pagan Peak.”
Endemol Shine will take over the Berlin arm of the business and set up a new drama banner under the stewardship of Nanni Erben, currently managing director of W&b TV.
W&b’s Quirin Berg and Max Wiedemann will remain managing directors of the film and TV companies they founded, and will join Leonine’s management team at start of 2020.
Berg will become chief creative and chief production officer, with responsibility for the overall creative direction of the group.

The Directors
From left to right:
Alfonso Cuarón – Roma (Mexico) Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck – Never Look Away (Germany) Hirokazu Kore-eda – Shoplifters (Japan) Nadine Labaki – Capernaum (Lebanon) Pawel Pawlikowski – Cold War (Poland) The Questions
1. What more could we be doing to give foreign language cinema a bigger platform in the United States?
Cuarón: We definitely need a switch of paradigm. Audiences are definitely hungry for these films, but they just don’t get the promotion. They don’t have the spaces. They’re relegated to these small little theaters. You have Cold War competing with Mega Avengers 5, you know? And by the way, I enjoy tentpole movies. I want to do tentpole movies. But I want all movies to co-exist.
Henckel von Donnersmarck: I think it would have to start at the school level. Perhaps it wouldn’t be the worst idea to have schools take one day off every month...
