PARIS -- The French culture minister said Monday that a parliamentary committee will on Thursday examine raising the cost of the annual television tax from €116.5 per household to €118 (€138). The tax hike, which the government hopes will go toward covering a €16.7 million ($20 million) shortfall in the ministry's 2004 budget, is expected to meet with resistance in parliament. But Claude Belot, a lawmaker who has worked on a special report on the budget amendment, defended the increase, saying France's TV tax is lower than those levied in Germany and the United Kingdom.
