Few major Hollywood pictures have developed the kind of infernal reputation that "The Exorcist" has since its release in 1973. The audience reaction to its shocking scenes is the stuff of legend and religious figures have widely deplored it. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops' Office of Film and Broadcasting (Usccb-ofb) condemned the film; The Christian Century labeled it "hardcore pornography;" and evangelist Billy Graham also had plenty to say (via Sage Journals). He stated that watching the film was like "exposing oneself to the Devil" and that "there is a power of evil in the film, in the fabric of the film itself" (via True Crime Edition).
Was Graham right? If the myth is to be believed, "The Exorcist" was surrounded by malevolent forces from Day One; William Friedkin's production was apparently beset by a series of mishaps, bad omens, accidents, injuries, illnesses, and even deaths, with nine...

A potent blend of It Follows and Jacob's Ladder, The Black String follows convenience store clerk Jonathan (Frankie Muniz), who is plagued by a vicious rash and disturbing visions following a one-night stand with a mysterious woman from a singles hotline.
The Black String is easily one of my favorite films of the year, and with the movie now on DVD, Digital, and On Demand from Lionsgate, Daily Dead had the great pleasure of catching up with co-writer/director Brian Hanson to discuss working with Frankie Muniz on his feature film debut, keeping the movie's horror ambiguous, teaming up with fellow military veteran Richard Handley to help bring the film to life, and the many cinematic influences behind The Black String.
Thanks for taking the time to catch up with us, Brian, and congratulations on The Black String! It’s one of my favorite films I’ve seen this year...

R. Lee Ermey, a veteran character actor who earned Golden Globe nomination for 1987’s “Full Metal Jacket,” died Sunday, his longtime manager Bill Rogin announced on Twitter. He was 74.
The Marine Corps veteran made his film debut in Francis Ford Coppola’s “Apocalypse Now,” and went on to play authority figures in films like “Mississippi Burning,” “Se7en” and even the “Toy Story” films (where he voiced Sarge, leader of the plastic Army men).
“It is with deep sadness that I regret to inform you all that R. Lee Ermey (“The Gunny”) passed away this morning from complications of pneumonia. He will be greatly missed by all of us. Semper Fi, Gunny. Godspeed,” the tweet reads.
Statement from R. Lee Ermey's long time manager, Bill Rogin:

Born Ronald Lee Ermey in Emporia, Kansas, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps at 17 when, after a second arrest for criminal mischief, he was given the choice between jail or the military. He chose the latter.
“Gunny,” as he became to be known, was a drill instructor in the 3rd Recruit Training Battalion in San Diego, where he served in the mid-’60s. He was stationed in Okinawa, Japan, in 1968, before being sent to Vietnam for 14 months, at which time he was medically discharged because of injuries. In 2002, he received an honorary promotion to gunnery sergeant.
While attending the University of Manila in the Philippines, Emery was cast in his first film — Francis Ford Coppola’s “Apocalypse Now,” playing a First Air Cavalry chopper pilot. Eight years later, he was cast as drill instructor Gunnery Sergeant Hartman in Stanley Kubrick’s “Full Metal Jacket,” earning a Golden Globe nomination in the process.

He went on to host two series on the History Channel, “Mail Call” and “Lock N’ Load With R. Lee Emery,” and “Gunny Time” on the Outdoor channel.

Radio host Art Bell, whose nationally syndicated paranormal, supernatural and conspiracy themed show Coast to Coast Am kept many awake at night – for good reasons and bad – died at his Pahrump, Nevada home on Friday the 13th. Bell was 72.
During its peak in the 1990s, Bell’s show was broadcast on approximately 500 North American radio stations, airing from his isolated hometown of Pahrump on Knye 95.1 FM, a station he founded.
According to the Coast to Coast Am website, Bell became an FCC-licensed radio technician at age 13 and once set a Guinness World Record for broadcasting solo for 116 straight hours while working as a DJ at Ksbk in Okinawa, Japan.
Bell retired several times in his career, which included a short-lived show on SiriusXM satellite radio in 2013. His leaves always sparked rumors as to the “true cause” of his departures among the conspiracy minded.

President Donald Trump continued his practice of throwing a lavish party at Mar-a-Lago to welcome the new year — and was joined this time by his friend, Fox Business personality Lou Dobbs. Several photos posted to Instagram over the last few days show Dobbs was present at the big event with his family. “When your parents are much cooler than you,” wrote Dobbs’ daughter, Hillary, on her Instagram earlier this week, captioning a snap of her parents, including Dobbs’ wife Debi. Wow! It's been awhile since I've heard of anyone hacking into a TV broadcast system! But, it happened on Thursday morning when a lot of people in the Orange County area of California were treated to some emergency alert messages warning of an alien invasion and that the apocalypse was coming.
One video of the broadcast was uploaded to YouTube and it features a terrified voice saying:
“The space program made contact with... They are not what they claim to be. They have infiltrated a lot of, uh, a lot of aspects of military establishment, particularly Area 51. The disasters that are coming—the military—I’m sorry the government knows about them...”
Watch it below:
According to Gizmodo, the audio comes from a call that Art Bell, the host of the conspiracy theory-themed radio show Coast to Coast Am, received in 1997 from a man claiming to be a former Area 51 employee.

Get ready for an attack of the clones when "Orphan Black" returns in two weeks!
A tantalizing new trailer provides some glimpses at season 2: It opens with shots of various clones -- Beth Childs, Alison Hendrix, Sarah Manning, and Cosima Niehaus (all played by the brilliant Tatiana Maslany).
In season 2, the Clone Club, led by Sarah, is still trying to figure out which of them is the original. But "pro clone" Rachel Duncan shuts down the experiment as she tries to get Sarah in line. She plans to use Cosima, who's ill, to do it. "Until Sarah comes to heel, Cosima will suffer," Rachel declares.
There are also brief peeks at Sarah smacking Paul, Detective Art Bell running through a field, ominous men in black suits, and a police car screaming toward Sarah.
"Orphan Black" season 2 premieres Saturday, April 19 on BBC America.

The only people who like destroying the world more than Roland Emmerich are the movie execs at Syfy, and they're always coming up with new and more preposterous ways of wreaking havoc on humanity. Syfy's latest source for our doom hails from the English countryside in the form of a Stonehenge Apocalypse, and you can witness the beginning of our demise in a new clip from the film debuting this weekend.
When a group of archaeologists dig up a human skeleton near the historical monument of Stonehenge, an ancient piece of machinery hidden beneath the bedrock is discovered. Not knowing what it could be, the workers accidentally trigger the mechanism and start a chain of events that may very well end the world as we know it.

There are several things that director Roland Emmerich (Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow) doesn’t seem too concerned about in the bloated, CGI-laden disaster movie 2012. These include, but are not limited to: plot, character development, plausibility, restraint, and subtlety. I kind of understand why he chooses to ignore these elements. If you get bogged down with all these pesky details, how are you supposed to focus on The Spectacle?
The Spectacle is the star of this film, and clearly every resource available was used to ensure that this movie looks good, everything else be damned. 2012 is a full 2 1/2 hour visual assault of CGI, destruction, chase scenes, and every natural disaster a geophysicist could possibly imagine. It’s chalk full of action movie clichés, right down to the brooding and estranged ex-husband who happens to be near his old family when disaster strikes, and must lead them to safety. Not...

2012 Studio: Columbia Pictures Rated: PG-13 for intense disaster sequences and some language. Starring: John Cusack, Amanda Peet, Thandie Newton, Woody Harrelson and Danny Glover Directed by: Roland Emmerich What it’s about: The Mayans predicted it, and now Woody Harrelson is calling out for Armageddon. Some think the end of the world will come on December 21, 2012, and Roland Emmerich has now made a movie about it. John Cusack, Amanda Peet and Chiwetel Ejiofor try to escape crumbling freeways, giant tsunamis and disastrous volcanoes. What I liked: There are certain directors that make utter crap, but I love none-the-less. Along with Brett Ratner, Paul W.S. Anderson and Renny Harlin, Roland Emmerich is one of these. Let’s face it, no one destroys the world like this guy, and he reminds us with 2012 that he is the master of disaster. Like Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, the reason to see 2012 is for the special effects. Emmerich...

NEW YORK -- Court TV is shaking up its entertainment newsmagazine "Hollywood at Large" in preparation for its primetime debut. The series, which has aired at 7 p.m. Fridays since 2001, will get a new host and producers and switch the location of its studio from Los Angeles to New York. The revamp was spurred by the series' solid ratings performance, where numbers have reached as high as 0.8. in prime access. "The show is doing so well for us in its current time slot that we see great possibilities for us in primetime," said Art Bell, executive vp programming and marketing at Court TV. Karen Duffy, an actress-model-journalist who is as an entertainment correspondent on HBO, will assume hosting duties from Wendy Walsh. A former MTV VJ, Duffy is a model for Revlon with a New York Times best seller to her credit, "Model Patient: My Life as an Incurable Wiseass." "She's a terrific personality onscreen and well-known to the audience we're trying to attract," Bell said. Court TV has hired Judy Bishop, a veteran of network's daytime trial coverage, as the new executive producer of "Hollywood at Large". Diane Petzke will come aboard as senior producer. Bishop will replace Steve Bronstein, who will stay on at Court TV in other capacities. New correspondents will also join series regulars A.J. Hammer and Vinnie Politan. The revamped "Large" will debut July 12 in its 7 p.m. slot before moving to its new home in the fourth quarter at 8 p.m. Thursdays.
