“What are you doing a fucking series on David Beckham for?”
It’s a question director Fisher Stevens said he fielded multiple times as he told friends and colleagues he had been courted to make what has become Netflix’s most-watched documentary of the past year. In discussion with IndieWire over Zoom, the multi-talented filmmaker revealed that he, too, was surprised at first to be approached with the idea for “Beckham,” and even a bit resistant to taking it on.

Dortmund (Germany), Aug 18 (Ians) German football league (Dfl) advisory board chairman Hans-Joachim Watzke said on Wednesday there would be no changes to the Bundesliga’s format “in the near future.”
Watzke is also chief executive of Borussia Dortmund and has had to watch as Bayern Munich have won the Bundesliga title for 10 seasons in a row.
Fans have moaned about a lack of competitiveness and the idea of introducing end-of-season play-offs has been mooted, with even Dfl chief executive Donata Hopfen saying it could be considered, reports Xinhua.
But despite the possible benefits to Dortmund, the last side to win the German title other than Bayern, Watzke said play-offs were not on any future agenda following a meeting of the Dfl’s general assembly on Wednesday.

Paris, Dec 15 (Ians) Lionel Messi, Ronaldo and Cristiano Ronaldo have found place in the greatest team of all time announced by France Football -- Ballon D'or Dream Team.
Having cancelled its annual Ballon d'Or award for the world's best footballer because of the Covid-19 pandemic, the weekly magazine instead has announced its best XI in history, as voted by journalists from 170 countries and regions.

Without doubt one of the coolest pieces of exclusive content are the Legends on FIFA Ultimate Team, available only to Xbox and Xbox One gamers. These historical powerhouses of the beautiful game make many of today’s players look distinctively unimpressive; indeed, Pelé’s 95 rating means that he is even better than Lionel Messi (now rated 93 on FIFA 15). The inclusion of 15 new Legends means that the roster is better than ever before, now boasting the likes of Bobby Moore, Franz Beckenbauer and Peter Schmeichel.
The jealousy coming from FIFA-addicted Playstation owners who wished they could add Pelé to their Ultimate Team is understandably rife. However, the Xbox-exclusive content isn’t without its faults. Even with the new additions to the roster, there are still several notable absentees who have inexplicably been overlooked once again.
Of course it would be an impossible task to include all of the sport’s historical greats.

Rio Ferdinand will not be handed a new contract at Manchester United and will be replaced by Germany international Mats Hummels next season.
Ferdinand, who joined from Leeds in August 2002 for a then-British-transfer-record £30 million, had been hoping for a fresh deal, but both the player and club have decided to go in a new direction.
“After 12 fantastic years, I have decided the time is right for me to move on,” Ferdinand has been quoted by the BBC.
And now, Hummels of Borussia Dortmund has been tipped with a move to the Theatre of Dreams as the veteran’s long-term replacement, the Express are reporting this morning.

Ben and Gabe Turner's football documentary The Class of 92 puts Manchester United's treble-winning team of 1999 under the microscope, specifically the six players - David Beckham, Gary Neville, Phil Neville, Nicky Butt, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs - who graduated from the club's youth academy and became some of the most decorated players the English game has ever seen.
Simply put, the Turners' film is funny and moving - essential viewing for football fans. Contributions from the likes of Tony Blair and Danny Boyle put the time period of The Class of 92 into a wider cultural context, but at its heart this is a Stand by Me-like tale of six young friends growing up together and sharing many ups and downs.

A shocking revelation has come to light that the world is under threat from a mysterious alien race, and our potential saviours will come not from the worlds of science or the military, or even from the realms of superheroes. Instead an elite team of footballers will challenge the potential invaders on the pitch, with an almighty prize up for grabs.
After the appearance of Mysterious Circles across the globe, and of odd hooded Mysterious Guys at football events, Franz Beckenbauer has confirmed not only that aliens exist, but that they are challenging mankind to a game of football to decide our fate.
Clearly, they’ve been watching Space Jam…

According to The Guardian, Bayern Munich’s honorary president, Franz Beckenbauer has announced that the German side would love to sign Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney, only for United legend Sir Bobby Charlton to insist the deal wouldn’t happen.
Wayne Rooney, 27, failed to make the starting eleven of Manchester United’s Champions League side against Real Madrid which has sparked speculation of a move away from Old Trafford. Despite Sir Alex Ferguson denying the claims and willing to offer the striker a new deal, rumours continue to circulate.
Former player and manager of Bayern Munich, Franz Beckenbauer said he would be:
“Very, very happy if Wayne Rooney decided to come to Bayern Munich”
Which sparked a response from Sir Bobby Charlton:
“Sir Alex Ferguson said he had no intentions of letting Wayne Rooney travel to anywhere and you have to abide by that, 100 per cent. He’s a great player.

Controversial FIFA President Sepp Blatter has dismissed penalty shootouts as a “tragedy” and insisted that football loses its “essence” when the game comes down to one and one.
In a shocking outburst, he has challenged German legend and head of the 2014 Football Task Force Franz Beckenbauer to come up with an alternative.
Blatter told the FIFA Congress in Budapest:
“Football can be a tragedy when you go to penalty kicks. Football should not go to one to one, when it goes to penalty kicks football loses its essence. Perhaps Franz Beckenbauer with his football 2014 group can show us a solution perhaps not today but in the future.”
An alternative to penalty shootouts would bring to an end a 42 year old tradition.

He tells Playboy magazine, "In the elevator with us was Franz Beckenbauer... (and) literally, the moment they told me I got it (part), the elevator opened and the lobby was filled with photographers. The lights were flashing and people were rushing toward us, shouting, 'Oh my God, of my God!'
"For a split second, I was still on the adrenaline rush of getting the part (and thought the commotion was for me). But nope, it was just some excited Germans who wanted to meet their soccer hero."...

During the USA versus England game this saturday I caught this commercial after the match and had to post it. Its design is to promote the adidas Originals brand which licenses some really cool Star Wars gear.
The film is a creative re-edit of one of the most famous Star Wars movie scenes, the Mos Eisley Cantina. This unique film was created as a result of a close partnership with Lucasfilm Ltd. who granted adidas use of their film for this special execution.
According to StarWars.com, “software called Flame® was used to composite (superimpose) the old and new shots together and remove old characters from the footage – taking care to blend the edges and make the joins seamless. Finally, the film was graded by The Mill’s colorists using a grading system called Baselight® to ensure that both the original cinematic footage and newly shot HD footage matched and the overall effect was flawless.

Tonight marks the end of Soccer Fever!—a week-long run of soccer films at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. The mini-festival closes with a rich and meticulous look into the World Cup in 1966, the only time England won it all. Goal! World Cup 1966 is narrated by the inimitable Nigel Patrick, his contemplative voice painting the film in earnestness at one turn, cheeky sarcasm the next. This is a rarely seen print, with incredible footage not only of English greats such as Bobby Charlton and Nobby Stiles, but of Pelé, Eusebio, and Franz Beckenbauer as well. It’s fascinating to see how much of the film seems to foreshadow today’s world of soccer. “Spain,” Patrick says when introducing the teams, “who never punch their weight in World Cups.” Later there are shots of the stands, so packed with people that the fans sway back and forth uncontrollably, like waves in...

There have been some pretty cool World Cup commercials popping up over the past few weeks (including Alejandro González Iñárritu's epic Nike ad [1]), but I am guessing this is one that a lot of movie fans in particular will be interested in. Adidas put together a commercial that inserts a number of different celebrities into the Mos Eisley Cantina scene from Star Wars as part of their new Adidas Originals campaign. The commercial was directed by Nima Nourizadeh [2], and features appearances by David Beckham, Daft Punk, Snoop Dogg, Franz Beckenbauer, Noel Gallagher, Ian Brown, Ciara, Jay Baruchel, and DJ Neil Armstrong. In order to accomplish this, they had to recreate the original dimensions of the bar to allow the actors to interact realistically and with the proper eyelines. The new footage was then composited with Flame software and then graded using Baselight to maintain a consistent look. (You can...

Who would have thought it, George Lucas is willing to revisit Star Wars again and insert a load of celebrities into one of the film’s most iconic scenes just to make a quick buck. I’m in shock.
The scene in question is the sequence from A New Hope in the Cantina in Mos Eisley where Luke and Obi-Wan first meet Han Solo. In this version though the following people have been inserted into the scene, along with a lot of Fifa World Cup references, Snoop Dogg, David Beckham, Daft Punk, Noel Gallagher, Ian Brown, Jay Baruchel, Franz Beckenbauer, DJ Neil Armstrong and Ciara.
You can probably tell from the sarcastic tone in my opening paragraph that I wasn’t particularly impressed by this video and the use of the scene to advertise Adidas. I’m not a angry fanboy though, honest, it’s only an advert and it...

Adidas fills the Star Wars Cantina scene with David Beckham, Snoop Dogg and Noel Gallagher for its big World Cup campaign
Adidas has hijacked the cantina scene from the original 1977 Star Wars for its lavish World Cup advertisement, splicing stars including David Beckham, Noel Gallagher and a light saber-wielding Snoop Dogg into footage featuring Han Solo and Obi-Wan Kenobi.
The commercial will launch on TV during England's opening group match against the USA next Saturday, 12 June, on ITV1.
The full-length ad features cameos by Franz Beckenbauer, Ciara, Daft Punk and Ian Brown. The sports footwear and clothing manufacturer had to seek permission from George Lucas's Lucasfilm for the rights to re-edit the Mos Eisley Cantina scene.

Tennis ace Boris Becker wed Sharlely "Lilly" Kerssenberg in St. Moritz, Switzerland, Friday. About 200 guests, many of them famous athletes like race car driver Mika Häkkinen and soccer legend Franz Beckenbauer, watched the couple tie the knot in the Bergkappelle, or mountain chapel, there, 6,562 feet above sea level. Cosmos pic is a keeper for Messing
PERUGIA, Italy -- Any one of a score of stories about the wacky world of the New York Cosmos soccer team in the 1970s could fill a movie theater with laughter and amazement. Even those who aren't fans of the game have to appreciate the screwball situation of a misplaced team playing an unpopular sport with foreign players in a country that had lost its way. But perhaps the most interesting character in the drama of goals, greed and girls was Shep Messing, the U.S. goalkeeper who was a native New Yorker and probably the least comfortable of all the Cosmos. Messing was a key character on the team of stars put together by Warner Communications chairman Steve Ross years before most American parents were driving their kids to soccer practice. The Cosmos roster also included Pele, the world's greatest soccer player; Franz Beckenbauer, the German soccer icon who led his country's World Cup organizing committee; and the charismatic Italian idol Giorgio Chinaglia. Messing is a key character in a new film that chronicles the rise and fall of the Cosmos, a club team that was playing in a dilapidated facility on Randall's Island when Ross tried to turn them into the world's most glamorous team.
