Dolly Parton joined The Porter Wagoner Show in 1967. She replaced Porter Wagoner’s former “girl singer” named Norma Jean Beasler. While Parton felt mostly ecstatic about her new gig (she was making more money than she’d ever seen in her entire life), there was one part she wished she could give back to Norma Jean—the commercials.
Some of ‘The Porter Wagoner Show’ advertisements weren’t so bad
Part of Parton’s job as Wagoner’s girl singer was to film the live commercials for the sponsors of the show. Overall, the “Jolene” singer wasn’t a fan of this duty.
“I would have gladly stepped aside to make way for Norma Jean’s temporary return when it came to the live commercials,” wrote Parton.
Some of the advertisements weren’t so bad.

Dolly Parton became Porter Wagoner’s “new girl singer” after Norma Jean Beasler left The Porter Wagoner Show in 1967. While the show was the “Dumb Blonde” singer’s first big break, she and her new boss often butted heads. It got to the point where it seemed as though their primary form of communication was arguing.
Dolly Parton believes Porter Wagoner came into her life for a reason
As difficult as her relationship with Wagoner ended up being, Parton believes she was always meant to work with the country personality.
“I think it was God’s will for a higher purpose for both of us,” she wrote in her 1994 memoir, Dolly: My Life and Other Unfinished Business. “I can’t speak for Porter, but I truly believe I have become a wiser and better person for the growth I accomplished during those difficult years.”

Lady Gaga isn’t holding anything back.
The 31-year-old pop star is laying it all bare in her new documentary, Lady Gaga: Five Foot Two, streaming now on Netflix.
During the one-hour-forty-minute runtime, Gaga tackles a myriad of tough subjects, including her own struggles in her love life, her public feud with Madonna and the challenges she’s faced as a woman in the music business. Preparations for Gaga’s 2016 album, Joanne, and her Super Bowl halftime performance serve as the threads tying the doc together, as cameras follow Gaga through celebrations, breakdowns and everything in between.
Lady Gaga: Five Foot Two is directed by Chris Moukarbel and produced by Live Nation Productions. The film premiered earlier this month at the Toronto International Film Festival. Here's just a few of the things Gaga gets candid about in the super-personal film:

A few years ago, in commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the death of influential film critic Pauline Kael, I wrote the following:
“I think (Kael) did a lot to expose the truth… that directors, writers and actors who often work awfully close to the surface may still have subterranean levels of achievement or purpose or commentary that they themselves may be least qualified to articulate. It’s what’s behind her disdain for Antonioni’s pontificating at the Cannes film festival; it’s what behind the high percentage of uselessness of proliferating DVD commentaries in which we get to hear every dull anecdote, redundant explication of plot development and any other inanity that strikes the director of the latest Jennifer Aniston rom-com to blurt out breathlessly; and it is what’s behind a director like Eli Roth, who tailors the subtext of something like Hostel Part II almost as...

When faced with a cancer diagnosis at age 90, Norma Jean Bauerschmidt chose the open road over the hospital. Rather than undergoing months of painful treatments, Bauerschmidt embarked on the adventure of a lifetime - touring the United States in a motor home captained by her son Tim and his wife Ramie. As Ramie explained to People last year, when Norma's doctor reviewed all the possible treatments for her stage 4 uterine cancer, the World War II veteran simply said no. "I'm 90 years old," Norma said. "I'm not interested in going through that. I'm hitting the road." With the support of her children,...

She's an actress and pin-up model. He's a photographer. So it seemed natural for two-time Survivor contestant Jessica "Sugar" Kiper to tie the knot with her new husband, Nicholas Critelli.
The couple said "I do" on Valentine's Day in a small outdoor ceremony. The reception was held in a '50s diner. "It's unique," Kiper tells People. "But I wanted to do something different. I'm wearing a red dress because that's good luck."
For Kiper, 36, love came unexpectedly in late 2014. "We actually met online," Kiper tells People, "but after we started dating, we did a photo shoot together."
The couple got engaged over the holidays.

While part one of Lifetime's The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe showed the bombshell's rough childhood and rise to fame, the second half was all about the star's tragic demise. As the men and movies piled up, the fame started to become too much for poor Norma Jean (Kelli Garner) -- and, well, you know how it ends. Part two opened in a smoky, boozy bar where we were introduced to baseball player Joe Dimaggio (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), setting the tone for what’s to come. You know: [...]...

The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe has everything you expect from a Lifetime miniseries: drugs, sex, scandal, and a mentally unstable acting legend! The two-part TV movie examines the life and times of the woman formerly known as Norma Jean, beginning with a two-hour installment all about the gone-too-soon superstar's early life. Kelli Garner stars as the titular blonde bombshell, while Susan Sarandon tackles Monroe's mother, Gladys. That's right: Sarandon and Nicole Kidman both starred in late May Lifetime movies. It’s been a great week for Lifetime! The [...]...

In our ever-more-fragmented media landscape, we're seeing fewer and fewer recognizable brand-name stars for *everybody*, but we're probably getting more and more recognizable brand-name stars for *somebody*. And that means that people who, to certain individuals, are clearly stars of a certain stature are virtual unknowns to great masses, possibly to majorities. And that's even the case with culture-watching professionals. Take Britt Robertson. I didn't see many "Tomorrowland" reviews calling her an unknown or even a newcomer, thankfully, but plenty of critics are still bending over backwards to reference credits like "Dan in Real Life" or "Delivery Man" as if audiences may struggle to place her. I hear her name and I think of an actress who has been the unquestioned star of at least two network TV shows and one of the stars (if only for a for a season) of a bona fide hit. In the sphere of what I do,...

Marilyn Monroe was a study in contradictions. She was the giddy, cooing blonde who became one of America’s haughtiest sex symbols, as well as a woman haunted by a thorny relationship with her mentally ill mom and the pressures of fame. The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe, a two-night mini-series on Lifetime, tries to peer into the woman behind the legend, opening up the scars that most viewers couldn’t see under the flash and sizzle of the big screen. However, the mini-series is too disjointed and melodramatic to completely work as a biopic. Nevertheless, Kelli Garner is masterful as Monroe, digging into the pain and vulnerability of a cultural icon without ever succumbing to mere impersonation. It’s a terrific performance, the magnetic core of an otherwise muddled misfire.
