For so long, RuPaul’s Drag Race wasn’t recognized by award shows at all. The competition series was one of the only shows made specifically for LGBTQ+ audiences for years, but thankfully, the TV landscape has evolved to catch up with its viewers. And Drag Race now has 24 Emmy wins under its belt with 11 nominations at this year’s ceremony alone, and judge Michelle Visage‘s online Whatcha Packin’ has received its first ever nomination in the Outstanding Short Form Nonfiction or Reality Series category. Quite the evolution. RuPaul and Visage both rose to fame in the 1980s. While they both shot up in popularity thanks to their respective music careers (RuPaul’s solo work includes “You Better Work (Supermodel)” and Visage was in the groups Seduction and The S.O.U.L. S.Y.S.T.E.M.), they met in the New York City nightlife scene, brought together...

We already know that Naomi Smalls can bend, but are we about to see her break? TVLine’s exclusive clip from tonight’s episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars finds the lip sync savage facing the very real possibility of being eliminated — and she’ll have Valentina to thank for it.
This week’s challenge divides the queens into teams to design and host their own VIP club nights, but Valentina shows up to build the club wearing high heels (and not much else), Naomi rightfully questions her partner’s commitment to the cause.
“I am stressed, because we have silver walls…...

Almost as ubiquitous as biographies of famous musicians (several of those coming in the next month) are documentaries about party icons of queer history. We’ve already had the exploits of The Fabulous Allan Carr and Scotty and the Secret History of Hollywood in 2018 s, and now we can add two more titles: Susanne Bartsch: On Top and Antonio Lopez 1970: Sex Fashion & Disco.
Mother of the club kids, the nicknamed “Queen of the Night” and party planner extraordinaire, Susanne Bartsch is probably best known for her role in putting together the Love Ball in 1989. The AIDS fundraiser with people like Madonna in attendance (no doubt a formative moment in the creation of her single “Vogue”) was iconic in ways that likely gets forgotten about without films like this one to thrust it in their face and remind them. Footage from the ball is pivotal to...

RuPaul is honoring ’80s party icon and Lgbtq champion Susanne Bartsch in a new documentary that follows one woman’s artistic impact.
In a People exclusive clip from the documentary Susanne Bartsch: On Top, the host of RuPaul’s Drag Race speaks about the woman who played a role in launching his career.
“All the kids my age who moved to New York, we all wanted to experience Andy Warhol,” the 57-year-old says in the clip. “So from near and far people would come, change their names and want to become a Warhol star.”

If it’s the Sunday-night kick-off of Fashion Week and you’re out and about like yours truly, then the revelry begins with the queen of nightlife, Susanne Bartsch, and her coterie of “dragarellas” at the Varick Street nightclub Greenhouse. There you might have witnessed Vogue’s fashion majordomo, Hamish Bowles, holding court far past his bedtime. Mr. Bowles strolled in after one a.m., nattily attired, as always, in one of his many bespoke chalk-stripe suits. G.W. pondered, How was the Diane von Furstenberg dinner party? (The cognoscenti know that the first Sunday night of every N.Y.C. Fashion Week, D.V.F. shifts the season into high gear with her ultra-exclusive dinner party, catered by Indochine, at her “MePa” atelier on West 14th Street.) “It was absolutely fantastic!” Mr. Bowles said. Unsurprised by this news, G.W. steered the discussion to any recent fashion shows he’s liked.
