Paramount+ today announced that the critically acclaimed documentary Kiss the Future, which made its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival and opened the Tribeca Festival in 2023, will premiere exclusively on the service in the U.S. and Canada on May 7. The documentary features interviews with Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, Christine Amanpour, Bill Clinton, and more.
Produced by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon for Artists Equity and Sarah Anthony, Kiss the Future was directed by Nenad Cicin-Sain and written by Bill S. Carter and Cicin-Sain. It is based on Carter’s memoir Fools Rush In.
The film tells a story of defiance amid the 1990s siege of Sarajevo during the Bosnian War, focusing on a vibrant, underground community that used art and music to affect change; a community that garnered global attention by ultimately inspiring an American aid worker to reach out to the band U2 to help raise awareness of the devastating conflict.

Formosa Group executive vp Matt Dubin is “taking over operational responsibilities and reporting structure” previously held by founder and CEO Bob Rosenthal, who caught many by surprise when he resigned on March 31, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
Dubin is a familiar face at the leading audio postproduction company, where he has worked since it was founded in 2013.
The company was contacted but declined to comment.
Bill Romeo, CEO of parent company Streamland Media, announced the news to staff on Monday, THR learned. “I am confident that Formosa Group will benefit from the dedication and leadership that Matt has demonstrated since the inception of the company and that Formosa Group will continue to thrive in his capable hands,” he wrote in a memo.
Also on Monday, Romeo announced that Tim Nett, one of the original partners and founders of Formosa Group and sister companies Picture Shop and Picture Head, has been named Streamland’s COO.

Following what was described as Formosa Group CEO Bob Rosenthal’s emotional last day with his team, there’s more developing at the leading audio postproduction company.
Rosenthal’s last official day at Formosa Group was Friday. A day earlier, a so-called “Formosa Group Collective” — a name being used to include employees from “all divisions, domestic and international,” including its award-winning sound talent — sent a petition to top brass at parent company Streamland Media, urging it to keep the company under Rosenthal’s “unhindered leadership,” The Hollywood Reporter has learned. THR has obtained a copy of the petition (below, in its entirety).
As THR understands it, the employees received a response from the company, but Streamland declined a request for comment.

The 2022 Oscar winners have been revealed! A whopping 276 films were eligible to be voted on by members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, but only 120 entries made the final cut across 23 categories. "Dune" cleaned up six wins for best sound, best original score, best production design, best film editing, best cinematography, and best visual effects. Will Smith took home to award for best actor in a leading role, and Ariana DeBose won for best actress in a supporting role for "West Side Story" - making history as the first Afro-Latina to win an acting Oscar.
Despite its 12 nominations, "The Power of the Dog" only snagged an award for best directing. "Belfast," which tied with "West Side Story" for seven nods, only won for best original screenplay. But overall, Netflix was this year's powerhouse, racking up 27 total nominations.

Denis Villeneuve was not nominated for Best Director, but his sci-fi epic “Dune” swept the Oscars Sunday night with six wins — the most of any film. Most quick to point out this disparity were Villeneuve’s below-the-line collaborators, who headed backstage after accepting their trophies with a common refrain: It’s all thanks to Villeneuve.
“Denis is the man,” Best Cinematography winner Greig Fraser said. “Every article or everything that is written about ‘Dune’ must start with the words ‘Denis Villeneuve.'” During his televised acceptance speech, the Australian Dp referred to Villeneuve as “Master Denis.”
“Dune” also won awards for Visual Effects, Production Design, Editing, Original Score, and Sound. It was also nominated for four other awards, including Best Picture.

It was a “Dune” crafts celebration Sunday at the Oscars, with Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi powerhouse from Warner Bros. grabbing six out of eight wins for cinematography, production design, editing, original score, sound, and visual effects.
“Dune” was the big screen event of the season, ushering in the reopening of theaters after the pandemic with its heady mix of politics and religion wrapped around a hero’s journey in the desert. It only came up short in costume design and makeup and hairstyling, where it got overshadowed by three-time Oscar winner Jenny Beaven’s ’70’s punk look for Emma Stone in “Cruella” (Disney), and the transformation of Best Actress winner Jessica Chastain into the infamous televangelist for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” (Searchlight Pictures).

Dune won the Oscar for Achievement in Sound, in one of tonight’s category outcomes that had been widely predicted.
The statuette was one of eight being handed out in a non-televised series of announcements leading up to the main broadcast. While the decision to cut the categories from the main telecast has drawn a fierce backlash, the recipients’ 45-second speech did not include any mention of the controversy.
Theo Green, one of the five specialists cited by the Academy, thanked director Denis Villeneuve in edited remarks shown during the Oscar broadcast. “You, sir, were like the spice flowing through our brains, turning our humble ideas into your imaginary world.” He also thanked composer Hans Zimmer and editor Joe Walker, who also won Oscars for their work on Dune and “treated us as fellow artists. Powerhouse “Dune” (Warner Bros.) took the early lead, grabbing four out of five craft Oscars after the controversial pre-taped ceremony of eight categories an hour before the ABC broadcast at 8 p.m. Et/5 p.m. Pt. Ahead of the 2021 Oscars, the academy made the decision to merge the Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing categories into one. The films vying for the second annual Best Sound prize are “Belfast,” “Dune,” “No Time to Die,” “The Power of the Dog,” and “West Side Story.” Our current odds indicate that “Dune” (31/10) will be victorious, followed in order of likelihood by “West Side Story” (39/10), “No Time to Die” (4/1), “The Power of the Dog” (9/2), and “Belfast” (9/2).
The craftspeople included in the current lineup have collectively amassed a staggering 86 previous nominations and 16 wins for their sound work in 57 films. Those responsible for the largest chunks are Andy Nelson and Gary Rydstrom, whose shared bid for “West Side Story” brings their respective individual totals to 22 and 19. Rydstrom has collected seven trophies over the years, including two each for “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” (1992), “Jurassic Park” (1994), and “Saving Private Ryan” (1999) and one for...

Updated March 21: “Dune” got two big boosts with Mpse and Cas wins, bolstering its Oscar chances on Sunday. The sci-fi epic took feature effects/foley at the virtual 69th annual Mpse Golden Reel Awards on March 13, and then live-action sound mixing at the 58th annual Cinema Audio Society Awards at the InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown.
Updated February 11: The sound Oscar nominees — “Belfast” (Focus Features), “Dune” (Warner Bros.), “No Time to Die” (MGM/UA), “West Side Story” (20th Century/Disney), and “The Power of the Dog” (Netflix) — provide a range of imaginative soundscapes that connect to the personal stories in fresh ways.
However, the sonic power and complexity of Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune” is going to be hard to beat. Its great achievement is creating a grounded reality that is both innovative and believable. “Dune” (Warner Bros.) was the big live action sound mixing winner Saturday night at 58th annual Cinema Audio Society Awards at the InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown. Other winners included “Mare of Easttown,” while “Summer of Soul” took home the awards for Motion Pictures: Documentary, and “Ted Lasso” scooped Television Series — Half Hour.

The most shocking snub of this year’s Oscar nominations was Denis Villeneuve’s omission from the best directing category for his science-fiction epic “Dune.” “It’s better to be in that position than the opposite,” Villeneuve tells Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast. “I prefer people say you should have been there instead of ‘what the hell are you doing there?’ I’m not making movies to get awards recognition. If you do that, you’re not walking the right path. I make cinema because I love the art form of cinema. I love making movies. If you had told me a year ago that we would get 10 nominations, including best picture, I would have laughed and said, ” You are out of your mind.”
On this episode of the award-winning “Variety Awards Circuit Podcast,” double Oscar-nominee Villeneuve discusses his passion for creating the world of “Dune” and that best director snub.

“Dune” was the big winner at the 2022 BAFTAs with five wins in the craft categories. Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog” won the coveted best film BAFTA and best director.
However, Campion could not be present at the awards, and her lead Benedict Cumberbatch collected the award on her behalf. Another notable absentee was Will Smith, who won best actor for “King Richard.” Both Campion and Smith were in Los Angeles attending the Critics Choice Awards, where they also won.
The evening was otherwise star-studded, with a full house at London’s Royal Albert Hall. The awards were hosted by Rebel Wilson, who was at her irreverent best. Her targets included the Royal family and 10 Downing Street.
The ongoing war in Ukraine was also acknowledged on at least three occasions during the awards evening. Wilson, while introducing Emilia Jones’ performance of Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now” from “Coda,...

BAFTA award winners Tom Cross and Elliot Graham have decried the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ decision to cut eight different Oscar categories, including film editing, from the live telecast.
Although “No Time to Die” is not nominated for best film editing at the Oscars, the duo said they were unhappy with the Academy’s decision to remove craft categories from its live awards broadcast during the BAFTA winners press conference after picking up their award.
“I’m glad you asked that,” said Cross in response to Variety’s question about the Academy’s decision. “I mean speaking for myself, I’m not a fan. I think it taints the entire proceeding, I think it’s not what the Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is about in my opinion. I feel lucky to have attended before and I just think that every Academy statue is gold. It’s not silver,...

In conjunction with Hans Zimmer’s inventive score, the innovative sound design of “Dune” helps drive the mystical journey of Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) on the desert planet Arrakis, where he bumps up against the unshakable force of nature. Indeed, score and sound blend together seamlessly into an organic soundscape, steered by editor Joe Walker, contributing mightily to Denis Villeneuve’s sensory experience. No wonder “Dune” is the frontrunner for score, sound, and editing.
“Denis wanted the sound to be gritty and realistic, and if you landed on Arrakis this is what you’d hear or what a documentary crew might’ve captured,” said supervising sound editor/designer Mark Mangini, who reunited with the Oscar-nominated “Blade Runner 2049” team of supervising sound editor/designer Theo Green and re-recording mixers Doug Hemphill and Ron Bartlett. “That initial framing of his goals informed everything that we subsequently designed and created and that Ron and Doug would mix.

The hustle and bustle of awards season is nearing an end, with Oscar voting getting underway on March 17. So naturally, every contender is looking to gain an advantage, and the BAFTA and Critics Choice ceremonies, which take place March 13, provide that opportunity.
At Cca, Kenneth Branagh’s “Belfast” and Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” lead the tally with 11 nominations apiece, including best picture. Still, with a group of more than 500 North America-based broadcast journalists and writers doing the voting, we shouldn’t expect either to triumph unequivocally.

At BAFTA, “Belfast’s” six-nom tally isn’t as robust as Focus Features would have liked, but prospects look strong for the film to pick up wins for original screenplay, outstanding British film and possibly supporting actor Ciarán Hinds, who is a legend across the pond. The best picture Oscar race is in a dead heat, with any number of paths to victory. But there’s another fierce competition, years in the making, to be the first streaming giant to win the Academy Awards’ most coveted honor.
On the television side, Netflix and Amazon each made a play to become the first streamer to win the Emmy Award for either of the top series categories, but Hulu shattered the glass ceiling with “The Handmaid’s Tale” in 2017. On the film side, could Apple Original Films be the surprise streaming giant to take home the Oscar statuette for best picture with the delightful family drama “Coda”?

The most shocking snub of the Oscar noms was Denis Villeneuve’s omission from the best directing category for his science-fiction epic “Dune.”
The film’s 10-nomination haul includes best picture and adapted screenplay, the latter perceived to be its most difficult to attain. Yet, Villeneuve’s lack of recognition for directing could rally widespread support from Academy voters and result in the film tying or surpassing a 50-year record held by “Cabaret” (1972).
Bob Fosse’s classic adaptation of the Broadway stage musical set a record at the 45th Academy Awards for the most Oscars received without winning best picture. Fosse’s film took eight trophies: for directing, actress (Liza Minnelli), supporting actor (Joel Grey), sound, art direction (now called production design), cinematography, film editing and the now defunct score adaptation and original song score. Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Godfather” walked away with three major prizes at the ceremony: picture,...

The mighty “Dune” (from Warner Bros.) affirmed its craft dominance on Tuesday by grabbing eight out of a possible nine Oscar nominations (original song wasn’t in play). Thus, Denis Villeneuve’s sweeping and heady sci-fi ran the field with everything else: cinematography, costume design, editing, makeup/hair, original score, production design, sound, and visual effects. Historically, that puts “Dune” right behind “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” and “Titanic,” which both had nine craft noms.
The closest competitors with four noms were Jane Campion’s Netflix western, “The Power of the Dog”, and Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” remake at Fox/Disney — which was two shy of the 1961 original. Landing three noms were Guillermo del Toro’s “Nightmare Alley” at Searchlight/Disney and Daniel Craig’s James Bond finale, “No Time to Die,” at MGM/UA.

Sound is one of the most important and misunderstood elements in filmmaking, and sound for sci-fi films adds another degree of difficulty.
“Dune,” directed by Denis Villeneuve, boasts two supervising sound editors, Mark Mangini and Theo Green, who worked on the film for 18 months.
“Science fiction is always complex,” says Mangini. “Theo and I called it ‘universe building.’ It’s a blank slate because nothing — people, machines, technology — exists, so all of it has to be invented. In the ‘Dune’ universe, we have ornithopters, dream sequences, the Voice, this palette of unknown things that make sound, which we had to invent from scratch.
“Denis’s mandate was to ground it in an organic reality. He didn’t want it to feel science-fiction-y. He wanted you to watch film and feel those sounds existed in acoustic reality. Theo and I had a philosophy: Fdr, or Fake Documentary Realism.”

In the ever-growing list of awards shows, American Cinematheque is throwing its clout behind a new one they call Tribute to the Crafts, an in-person celebration of the artisans behind the scenes who don’t get nearly the attention during the season that their above-the-line colleagues seem to. The ceremony, which will try to rectify this oversight, is set for Wednesday January 26, at the Cinematheque’s Aero Theatre in Santa Monica.
The new show will “honor those who are at the very heart of filmmaking, and have exhibited extraordinary work behind the camera, over the past year.” The evening will celebrate individuals in fourteen categories covering all aspects of filmmaking and will showcase clips from each of their respective films. The audience for this invitation-only event will be composed of members from AMPAS, PGA, WGA, DGA, SAG-AFTRA, BAFTA and Critics Choice.

The American Cinematheque announced today the honorees for the inaugural Tribute to the Crafts, which will take place in-person on Jan. 26, at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica, Calif.
Tribute to The Crafts will honor those who are at the very heart of filmmaking and have exhibited extraordinary work behind the camera, over the past year. Among the artisans being honored are “The Power of the Dog” cinematographer Ari Wegner, “Cruella” costume designer Jenny Beavan, “Dune” editor Joe Walker, composer Nicholas Britell for “Don’t Look Up” and the hair and makeup team behind “House of Gucci” — Jana Carboni, Giuliano Mariano, Göran Lundström, Sarah Tanno and Frederic Aspiras.

"Denis expects you to bring your A-game." SoundWorks Collection has debuted a new 30-minute making of featurette / short doc exploring the Sound Design of Dune. This is made & edited by Michael Coleman and features interviews with director Denis Villeneuve, plus many members of his crew: sound editor & sound designer Mark Mangini, sound editor & sound designer Theo Green, re-recording mixer Ron Bartlett. They discuss the creative benefits of early collaboration with Denis, the process of crafting Dune's unique soundscapes including: Arrakis desert, sandworm, ornithopter, spice, voice of the Bene Gesserit. There's So many fascinating revelations: the sound crew's early work with Denis, not just in post; Denis approached it as a documentary; they went and actually recorded sand in Death Valley (inspired by "singing sand dunes"). It all makes sense, of course, because this is Dune! I'm expecting this team to land an Oscar nom next year. Thanks to Michael...

IndieWire lists Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune” as a frontrunner to land an Oscar nomination for Best Sound this awards season, and it’s all thanks to the film’s lead sound team: Mark Mangini, Theo Green, and Ron Bartlett. The three gentlemen recently joined Villeneuve on Dolby’s “Sound + Image Lab” podcast to break down the soundscape of “Dune.” The hourlong conversation revealed one of the sounds in the film Villeneuve is most proud of: The Ornithopter. It took a “crazy recipe” of individual sounds mixed together to create the vehicle’s soundscape.
“I was terrified,” Mangini said when he learned creating the Ornithopter sound was his responsibility. “It’s an unknown method of transportation and it uses wings and we don’t even know what the propulsion is. We embarked on an extensive experimentation process of trying to find the individual elements. What could we make wings out of?...

“Us,” Jordan Peele’s second outing as a director, following his 2017 critical and box office success “Get Out,” revisits similar psychological horror-thriller territory. But this time the stakes are, well, doubled.
In the new film, to be released by Universal on March 21, Adelaide Wilson, played by Lupita Nyong’o, returns to her childhood beachside home with her husband (Winston Duke) and their two children (Shahadi Wright Joseph and Evan Alex). Suddenly they find themselves clawing to stay alive, as four people who look just like them seem hell-bent on killing them.
The main challenge for the film’s below-the-line team was to keep the story grounded in realism while escalating the horror — and keeping the characters and their doppelgängers well defined.
For production designer Ruth De Jong, “Us” represented a collision of two worlds she previously created: the tragic reality of “Manchester by the Sea” and the strange uneasiness of “Twin Peaks.

The 90th Academy Awards has concluded and I think a lot of movie geeks are happy with the way things played out! I couldn't be more excited to see Guillermo del Toro win Best Director and his film The Shape of Water win Best Picture of the year!
We also saw Gary Oldman win Best Actor, which he definitely deserved! Frances McDormand, took home the Best Actress Award and Sam Rockwell won for Best Supporting Actor for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Then there was Jordan Peele, who won Best Original Screenplay for Get Out, which so freakin' cool!
Personally, the one film that I didn't think should have won was Call Me By Your Name for Best Adapted Screenplay. Molly's Game, Logan, Mudbound, and The Disaster Artist were all better films with better scripts!
Below you'll find a full list of the nominees with the winners bolded. Are you happy with the winners?...

Sound editor Mark A. Mangini reveals that while he was inspired by the original “Blade Runner” (1982) for his work on Denis Villeneuve‘s followup, “Blade Runner 2049,” he didn’t want to copy it. “One of our early tasks was to understand what made the first film so rich and interesting sonically, and then find a way to deconstruct it and make it our own,” he explains. “We wanted to honor it in the way that it was so effective and so subversive in its use of sound.” By opening themselves up to a more musical and expressionistic style, Mangini and Theo Green reaped an Oscar nomination for Best Sound Editing. Watch our exclusive video interview with the duo above.

“‘Blade Runner’ was in our DNA,” reveals sound mixer Doug Hemphill about his work on “Blade Runner 2049.” Hemphill and his colleague Ron Bartlett previously collaborated with Ridley Scott on the 2007 final-cut version of the 1982 sci-fi classic, re-mixing the film with all the new bells and whistles available to them. When they lent their talents to Denis Villeneuve‘s 2017 followup they reaped an Oscar nomination for Best Sound Mixing. Watch our exclusive video interview with Hemphill and Bartlett above.

Their experience working on the original years after its release helped inform their work on the sequel. “It was great hearing [Scott’s] ideas,” Bartlett explains, “taking those thematic elements and moving it into this one.” This was especially true when it came to Vangelis‘s iconic score, which “2049” composers Hans Zimmer and Benjamin Wallfisch paid...

The nominations for the 2018 Academy Awards are in and Guillermo del Toro's fantastic film, The Shape of Water, did pretty damn good as it leads the pack with thirteen of the nominations! Those include Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Original Screenplay and more. This was one of my favorite movies of the year, so it was great to see it get a lot of love.
Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk ended up with eight nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri received seven nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actor. Jordan Peele's Get Out also landed a few nominations including Best Director, which was cool!
As expected, James Franco and his film The Disaster Artist got snubbed amid sexual misconduct allegations surrounding the actor.
Here is the list of 2018 Oscar nominations. Read through them and let...
