As a sports fan, “you want to pull your hair out” when trying to toggle between streaming and linear TV, in the view of Nexstar President and COO Mike Biard.
That “less-than-ideal” user experience helps explain why 60% of viewership for Thursday Night Football occurs on broadcast stations in team markets rather than on Prime Video, the exec said, citing internal research. Biard, who joined Nexstar last summer after a long career at Fox, made the comments during an appearance Tuesday at Deutche Bank’s Media, Internet & Telecom Conference.
Under the terms of the NFL’s media rights deals, any games carried on streaming or cable TV are also made available free and over-the-air via local TV stations in the two home markets of the teams playing in the game. Prime Video is two years into an 11-year deal for Thursday Night Football, and recorded a 24% jump in total viewership in its sophomore season.

When Intuit Dome — the new Inglewood home of the Los Angeles Clippers that billionaire owner Steve Ballmer has spent upward of $2 billion constructing — opens in August, it will unveil not only a state-of-the-art sports and concert venue, but also a high-end VIP club.
The Lexus Courtside Lounge — available to those with courtside seats — is being designed by London-based interior designer Rita Konig, who was also behind the look of the Hollywood-loved private members’ club San Vicente Bungalows. Gillian Zucker, president of business operations for the Clippers, says that when looking to create the arena’s courtside experience, they were inspired by the energy of the Bungalows, which is “so L.A.-vibey, and at the same time it’s comfortable. You just feel like you’re at home, or at least a place you wish were your home.”

There’s a power outlet at every seat in the Intuit Dome, along with an adjustable fan. There are twice the number of restrooms in the L.A. Clippers’ soon-to-open new home in Inglewood, Calif. than are found in a typical sports arena. The ticket entry areas and concessions stands are built for frictionless, wireless transactions – nobody has to pull out tickets or find Qr codes or wait in a long line to pay for beer and a bag of chips.
Everything about the 17,700-seat Intuit Dome, which is in the six-month countdown to its opening day in mid-August, is designed to indulge the experience of fans. And fans hate having to miss big moments on the court or the performance stage because of an empty stomach or full bladder. Nearly a decade after acquiring the NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers, Steve Ballmer is finally realizing his dream to build a bigger and better TV platform for his beloved basketball franchise.
The Clippers today are launching ClipperVision, a regional subscription streaming service that offers six channel options for watching the vast majority of the team’s home and away games – more than 70 out of 84 regular season games. The service will cost 199 per season and is available largely in Southern California. The service’s first live stream bows Oct. 22. with an away-game against the Sacramento Kings.
One of the six channel feeds will be dedicated to the team’s traditional linear cable TV coverage via Bally Sports. Two more are dedicated to Spanish-language and Korean-language coverage of live games – with the Korean team anchoring from a studio in Seoul.
Another feed is an alternative view of the game — akin to ESPN...

The board of Madison Square Garden Entertainment said today that it is considering a spinoff of its live entertainment business that would include Msg Network and NYC’s Madison Square Garden, Radio City Music Hall and Beacon Theatre, among other assets.
A deal would separate the live entertainment and Msg Networks businesses from Msg Sphere and Tao Group Hospitality to create two public companies, Msg said. No timetable for a potential transaction was set.
Shares in Madison Square Garden Entertainment jumped 6 in after-hours trading on the news.
The Dolan family, which controls Msg, previously oversaw a split of its entertainment and sports assets in 2020, and Msg Sports and Msg Entertainment have traded separately since. Cable TV was the family’s longtime focus until it sold Cablevision for 17.7 billion to French conglomerate Altice in 2016.

Nike co-founder Phil Knight and Dodgers co-owner Alan Smolinisky have offered, in writing, more than 2 billion for the Portland Trail Blazers NBA franchise according to multiple reports.
The Trail Blazers were long owned by Paul Allen, who Allen bought them in 1988 for 70 million. Since his passing four years ago, the team has been a part of the late billionaire’s estate, of which his sister Jody is trustee. While she has controlled the team for the past four years, it was reportedly always her brother’s wish that the Trail Blazers be sold off to another passionate owner or owners. They may have just arrived.

In what is said to be one of the biggest naming rights deals in U.S. history, Downtown L.A.’s Staples Center will become Crypto.com Arena, beginning Christmas Day. The deal between the Hong Kong-based cryptocurrency exchange and Aeg is worth $700 million, according to multiple reports. As part of the deal, Crypto.com becomes “an official cryptocurrency platform partner of the Los Angeles Lakers and the L.A. Kings,” said a statement from the currency trader.
The deal becomes official on Christmas Day, which just happens to be the occasion of the NBA’s highest-profile regular season game, a nationally-televised contest between the Lakers and the Brooklyn Nets at the newly-christened L.A. arena. The Los Angeles Clippers are stepping up their arena game.
Steve Ballmer, Los Angeles Clippers chairman, spoke with Variety‘s “Strictly Business” podcast about his plan to build the team a dedicated arena in Inglewood, Calif., scheduled to open in 2024. The team at present shares Staples Center with their NBA rivals, the Los Angeles Lakers.
Ballmer has been deeply involved in the planning and design for the venue, which will have state-of-the-art technology features and a host of elements that will make it purpose built for basketball and concert performances. No other sports will play in Intuit Arena, as it will be known thanks to a naming-rights deal with the software company that was announced last month.
“For basketball, that means creating a sense of community,” Ballmer says. “The more people feel like they are brought together, that makes for a better experience. I wanted to make sure it was a basketball mecca.

Bill And Melinda Gates Split After 27 Years: “We No Longer Believe We Can Grow Together As A Couple”
Bill and Melinda Gates, who built a large and multi-faceted philanthropic organization that became the focus for Bill Gates after he left Microsoft, are splitting.
The couple announced their decision on Twitter.
“We have raised three incredible children and built a foundation that works all over the world to enable all people to lead healthy, productive lives,” they said in a statement. “We continue to share a belief in that mission and will continue our work together at the foundation, but we no longer believe we can grow together as a couple in this next phase of our lives.”
Bill Gates had established himself as one of the most wealthy and successful tech executives in the world by the time the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation launched in 2000. It set out to tackle extreme poverty and health issues around the world, making strides in curbing malaria and other diseases and delivering resources.

Los Angeles Clippers coach Doc Rivers and team governor Steve Ballmer talked with Trevor Noah tonight on the Daily Social Distancing Show, revealing that the players and owners of the various teams will be working together to influence legislation and increase voter registration.
Asked why the work strike occurred, Rivers said, “The players literally need to take a breath. Like I said earlier, it’s not lost on me that George Floyd was never afforded to take that breath. But our players did. In doing that, they were able to refocus and come up with tangible things that they wanted to do.”
Rivers blamed the isolation of the National Basketball Assn.’s “bubble” environment in Orlando for how the players reacted to the shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

Multiple NBA teams have had high-level conversations about doing away with the term "owner" over the past year -- and at least two teams have already made the switch, TMZ Sports has learned. The 2019 NBA Finals are in full swing. Fans cheered for their favorite teams all season long, but it was the Golden State Warriors and Toronto Raptors that made it to end. While there's always a little trash-talking off the court, some fans take these rivalries to a whole new level. Jimmy Kimmel proved this to be true by having a few players and owners read hateful social media posts about themselves for Thursday's segment of "Mean Tweets." The Jimmy Kimmel Live! host recruited some big NBA names, too, including Kevin Durant, Charles Barkley, Ben Simmons, Chris Bosh, Bradley Beal, Dirk Nowitzki and Joel Embiid. It’s time for the 2019 NBA finals, as the Toronto Raptors take on the defending champion Golden State Warriors. Or, as Jimmy Kimmel put it during the NBA Game Night primetime special, “A team of young Canadian upstarts – versus – the team that’s gonna win.”
Kimmel was in rare form on his monologue. Some of his better lines:

National Football League owners reportedly want Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos to join the club by purchasing the Seattle Seahawks franchise.
The Seahawks were owned by Paul Allen, who passed away earlier this week from septic shock after battling a recurrence of cancer. Bezos, who may be the richest man in the world, is reportedly being prodded by several NFL owners, including influential Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.
Bezos already has ties to the NFL, as Amazon has an NFL partnership to stream Thursday Night Football. He is also based in Seattle, providing a hometown touch that the league craves in its ownership.
A purchase by Bezos would keep the team rooted in Seattle, something that Allen assured when he bought the team in 1996.
Allen’s sister, Jody Allen, is his main heir, but has not commented. It is believed she has little interest in running the Seahawks or the NBA’s Portland Trailblazers,...

Update with video Los Angeles Clippers owner Steve Ballmer said on HBO’s Real Time With Bill Maher tonight that the NBA not only has a more racially diverse – and younger – fan base than the NFL, but encourages its players to “express themselves.”
“I’ll speak for the NBA,” Ballmer said tonight. “We believe our players should express themselves. We are pleased to see our players express themselves. I encourage our players, use your platform. Speak.”
Ballmer, the former CEO of Microsoft and owner since 2014 of L.A.’s basketball franchise, made the NBA-NFL distinction during a panel discussion of conservatism in sports and the NFL’s attempts to keep players from protesting during the national anthem.
Mark Leibovich, New York Times writer and author of The Big Game: The NFL in Dangerous Times, said football is by far the “most Republican” sport, with a largely Republican fan base.

Microsoft President Brad Smith drew lessons from the software giant’s “gut wrenching” antitrust battles of the late 1990s that seem to resonate today, as Facebook faces scrutiny of its data privacy practices by regulators in the U.S. and Europe.
“If you create technology that changes the world, the world is going to want to govern you, it’s going to want in some measure to regulate you,” Smith said today, in the opening day of the Code Conference on Rancho Palos Verdes. “You have to come to terms with that.”
Microsoft was cast as a monopolist for its command of the software operating 90% of the world’s computer desktops in 1998, when antitrust regulators accused it of anticompetitive practices in its bundling of the Internet Explorer browser as part of its operating system — placing the rival Netscape browser at a disadvantage.

Billionaire businessman and CNBC’s “Billion Dollar Buyer” star Tilman Fertitta has agreed to buy the NBA’s Houston Rockets franchise for a league record $2.2 billion. That tops the previous record of $2 billion, which was the hefty price tag former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer paid for the Los Angeles Clippers in 2014. Fertitta owns the Golden Nugget Casinos and restaurant group Landry’s, which counts Bubba Gump Shrimp, Rainforest Cafe and Morton’s Steakhouse among its many establishments and chains. The Houston native actually worked for the Rockets as a director back in the mid-1990s, and was an original investor in the city’s Texans.

Microsoft announced it’s laying off thousands of workers as it reorganizes its sales force, as anticipated earlier this week. About 3,000 people will lose their jobs, with 75 percent of the cuts coming outside of the United States, according to CNBC. The Seattle-based tech heavyweight is aiming to ramp up selling Azure, its cloud service, with the reorganization. Microsoft has been a software giant for decades, but its emphasis on the cloud is a byproduct of increasing pressure from Amazon and Google in a competitive space.
