Exclusive: Winter State Entertainment on Tuesday announced two feature docs on NFL Hall of Famer Mel Blount and MLB icon Tommy John that will lead its forthcoming slate, having wrapped principal photography on each right before the launch of the WGA strike.
The first film, Mel Blount: Whatever It Takes, on longtime Pittsburgh Steeler Blount, will offer a deep dive into his life journey, from his arduous beginning in a segregated Vidalia, Georgia to getting drafted in the 3rd round by the struggling Steelers, to the next 14 years, where he won four championships and cemented himself as the best at his position as cornerback. Upon retirement, Blount shifted his focus towards kids who were stuck in the system, opening two youth homes to give them a chance to turn their lives around, even when the community and KKK pushed back against him. Now, 40 years later, Blount has afforded this opportunity to hundreds.

When the Houston Astros and the New York Yankees take the field for Game One of the American League Championship Series tonight, Johnnie B. Baker Jr. — affectionately known as “Dusty” because, as a child, he loved to play in the alluvial dirt of Riverside, California — will be there. As the Astros’ manager places that first, fresh toothpick in his mouth and sets foot on the lightly moisturized dirt of Minute Maid Park, we’ll all have the great honor of watching the man who many say co-invented the high five continue his long,...

ESPN’s “E60” will take a look at baseball great Barry Bonds as he approaches his last year of eligibility on the writers’ ballot for candidates for the Baseball Hall of Fame, a sign that allegations around his use of performance-enhancing drugs have tarnished some parts of his legacy.
The ESPN program will present “Bonds” on Nov. 7 at 9:30 p.m. Et, with Jeremy Schaap reporting. Over the course of his 22-season career, Bonds amassed a record 762 career home runs, a record 73 home runs in a single season and eight Gold Gloves. But, he was indicted in 2007 on charges of perjury and obstruction of justice during the federal government’s investigation into a steroid manufacturer. The perjury charge was dropped and an obstruction conviction was later overturned. Even so, Bonds has not played baseball for a professional team since 2007.

Cincinnati Reds 2nd baseman Brandon Phillips is in deep-fried trouble with a pro-fat person organization after blasting a sports reporter as a "fat motherf**ker" ... TMZ has learned. The National Association for the Advancement of Fat Acceptance (Naafa) had their ears (and probably their mouths) open when Phillips went off on C. Trent Rosecrans during a news conference with Reds manager Dusty Baker. Rosecrans -- who happens to sport a fuller figure -- had gotten...

Exclusive: Long before veteran hoops player Jason Collins made a groundbreaking announcement this week that he is a gay athlete, there was former Los Angeles Dodgers and Oakland A’s 70s phenom outfielder Glenn Burke. Burke, who right up front made his teammates and team management aware he was gay, back when this was really taboo. Post-retirement, he became the first baseball player to come out publicly, during a Today Show interview with Bryant Gumbel in 1982. Jamie Lee Curtis and Juma Entertainment are hoping the attention being paid to Collins will provide momentum for a story she has been trying for years to tell about Burke, based on Out At Home: The Glenn Burke Story, the autobiography written by Burke with Erik Sherman. Drafted by the Dodgers and touted as a potential star, Burke got off to a flying start when he became the only rookie to start in the 1977 World Series.

Fun fact about Clint Eastwood's last performance in "Gran Torino": Despite great reviews and $269 million in worldwide box office, the Hollywood legend was not nominated for Best Actor. Looking back, that's not too hard to believe -- Sean Penn, Mickey Rourke, Brad Pitt, Richard Jenkins and Frank Langella earned worthy nominations at the 81st annual Academy Awards -- but, still: With only four onscreen performances in the last decade, how many more chances will the Academy have to honor Eastwood for what could be a final time?
Thanks to "Trouble With the Curve," at least one more. Warner Bros. released the first trailer for the baseball drama, and it looks like an amalgam of "Gran Torino" and "Moneyball," without the racism of the former and the Moneyball techniques of the latter. In "Curve," Eastwood stars as Gus, an aging baseball scout with failing eyesight who goes out on...

This kind of thing happens all the time. Just another Brandon Phillips between-the-legs double play.
Phillips made the between the legs play against the Mets on Sunday, to start the old 4-6-3. It's a lot better than the behind the back play he made last year, when the bum didn't even get the ball to the bag on time to complete a double play. Check the video:
Brandon Phillips better not try any funny business tonight against the Indians, or he'll liable to get one in the ear from Cleveland pitcher Derek Lowe, who, like Phillips' Reds manager Dusty Baker, maintains a manic and reckless hate in the belly of his soul.

If you find yourself without much going on with your Monday night tonight, and you'd like to stand vigil grown men fighting with each other, be sure to tune in to the Indians-Reds game. Derek Lowe will be starting for the Indians, and apparently Lowe and Reds manager Dusty Baker really hate each other.
The 2012 Mlb season has been sorely lacking in good brawls, so maybe this could be good tonic.
Lowe started against the Reds last week, and in the aftermath of the game, Lowe and Baker had an amazing back-and-forth in the media, revealing a mutual hatred of mysterious origin that has been brewing for years.
Here's what happened:
When Derek Lowe came to the plate in the fifth inning against the Reds last week, Cincinnati starter Mat Latos threw a purpose pitch inside to Lowe, which Baker later admitted he had ordered from the dugout.
Lowe gestured at Baker,...

Baseball is a gentleman's game, full of long, languid moments with periods of manic energy lumped in between. It's an easy-going sport with no clock and a lot of poetic, philosophical moments. But occasionally, tempers flair up and a good old-fashioned donnybrook breaks out. Such was the case in the game between the Cincinnati Reds and the St. Louis Cardinals in Cincinnati on Tuesday (August 10). On Monday night, Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips openly said some negative things about the Cardinals, which Cards catcher Yadier Molina apparently took really seriously. So when Phillips came up to bat in the bottom of the first inning, Molina said something to him that quickly escalated into a shout-off and the clearing of both benches.
Everything looked calm and collected for a while, until somebody threw a punch and ignited a brawl (the center of which was Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter and Reds hurler...
