When Tony Scott died in 2012, he left behind more than a few unfinished projects, including a remake of Sam Peckinpah’s iconic Western, The Wild Bunch.
L.A. Confidential screenwriter Brian Helgeland was attached to write the script for the remake of The Wild Bunch for Tony Scott, and he spilled a few details about the project while speaking with Inverse, including that it would have been set in the modern day.
“I also wrote 45 pages of The Wild Bunch for Tony to direct before he died. Sadly, I always say that I’m still on page 45 of that project,” Helgeland said. “It’s pretty violent and set in the modern day. The plot revolves around L.A. rampart cops that were being sent to prison, but during the trial, they’re still technically free. So, they decide to head down to Mexico and rob a bank before scattering to the...

Deadline hears that Michael Fassbender, Jamie Foxx and Peter Dinklage are in early talks to take part in the contemporized remake of the 1969 Sam Peckinpah Western about a group of aging outlaws looking for one last score.

Even Mel Gibson wasn’t initially sold on his latest filmmaking project. Late last month, the “Hacksaw Ridge” and “Passion of the Christ” filmmaker was confirmed to direct and co-write a remake of the 1969 Western “The Wild Bunch,” originally directed by Sam Peckinpah, but at a recent event, he admitted that his take on the classic film originally sprung from “a bad idea.” Gibson will handle screenplay duties with Bryan Bagby and also executive produce the film, which is set up at Warner Bros.
On Tuesday evening, Gibson made a surprise appearance at the U.S. premiere of S. Craig Zahler’s film “Dragged Across Concrete,” in which Gibson stars alongside Vince Vaughn as a pair of crooked cops planning a major heist. Deadline reports that Gibson, Zahler, and the rest of the cast sat for a “lengthy post-screening stage interview,” during which talk inevitably turned to Gibson’s imminent remake.

Sarah Silverman Reacts Against Mel Gibson’s ‘Wild Bunch’ Remake by Calling Out His Anti-Semitic Past
Warner Bros. has hired Mel Gibson to co-write and direct its upcoming remake of Sam Peckinpah’s 1969 Western “The Wild Bunch,” but the news wasn’t exactly met with cheers on social media. Gibson has a history of controversial behavior, ranging from making anti-Semitic comments to being convicted of battering his ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva. The director’s past reemerged on social media in reaction to his high profile new directing gig.
Sarah Silverman took to Twitter to call out Gibson’s anti-Semitic past, sharing an article about Gibson’s “Wild Bunch” remake with a caption that read, “Fucking Jews. The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world.” The words are Gibson’s own from when he was pulled over in 2006 for speeding and drunk driving. Silverman was joined by numerous film writers in rallying against the news of Gibson’s latest directing project.

Mel Gibson has announced that he will co-write and direct a remake of Sam Peckinpah's controversial 1969 Western classic "The Wild Bunch". We can hear retro movie lovers around the globe shout "Oh, no!" But Gibson, who is enjoying a career renaissance since making some drunken, racist rants years ago, has a knack for making hit films out of seemingly unpromising ideas. He won the Oscar for Best Director for "Braveheart" and turned "The Passion of the Christ" and "Apocalypto" into surprise boxoffice hits. Still, tampering with Peckinpah's revisionist Western, which is better regarded today than it was at the time of its release, will be seen as treading on dangerous ground. No details are known at this time, as Gibson is working on a WWII film, "Destroyer" after which he is to commence work on "The Wild Bunch". Gibson's co-scripter Bryan Bagby, has a slim list of credits on IMDb.

Regardless of what you think about Mel Gibson as a person, the guy is an extremely talented director that has made one great film after another. According to Deadline, his next film project is a remake of the classic 1969 western The Wild Bunch! He is set to direct the film from a script that he will co-write with Bryan Bagby.
I’m a big fan of the original film and I guess it was only a matter of time before it got remade. Warner Bros. has been trying to get the project off the ground for years. I guess if anyone is going to do it and do it right, it’s Mel Gibson. I normally don’t care for remakes, but I can’t help but be a little excited to see how Gibson handles this movie.

For the fourth consecutive year Hollywood has selected its Black List, a compilation of the top unproduced screenplays for 2009. Over 300 film professionals were asked to submit the titles of up to ten of their favorite screenplays. The only condition for the picks were that the projects would not be released in theaters this year. That means some of the Black List honorees may be in the process of being turned into movies but by far the majority remain thoughts on digital ink, a blueprint for grand dramatic ideas, high-reaching adventure and controversial ideas waiting to be burned to light.
For a screenplay to have made it onto the Black List it must have received at least five votes for it. Some scripts have five votes while the top-rated screenplay received 47 votes. That doesn't mean that the script with the most votes is the best screenplay of the year; it means...
