If 25 years ago, producer Dick Wolf had stuck with the original subtitle of his first Law & Order spinoff, which was inspired by the prosecution of “Preppy Killer” Robert Chambers, this story may not have been written. After all, recommending a show subtitled Sex Crimes to your parents might have elicited a certain “ick” factor. Luckily, that wasn’t a problem when the drama, retitled Special Victims Unit, premiered on September 20, 1999. Most critics praised the show, even with its “squirm-inducing cases,” and over 14 million viewers tuned in and became regular watchers despite the “heinous” crimes on display, to quote the show’s weekly opening prologue. Svu won new fans in Season 3 when it deviated from the original Law & Order’s all-about-the-case content and delved into what made the unit’s detectives, as well as the criminals, tick. Admitting that the earliest episodes were “a bit too sensational,” Wolf hired...

Exclusive: Queer advocacy group Out in Hollywood released its second annual list of the best unproduced queer-focused television pilot scripts of the past year.
The 2022 Out Loud List was selected from among hundreds of nominations submitted from across the industry and evaluated based on criteria including the strength of the writer’s voice, viability of the project to be sold in today’s marketplace, and conceptual freshness. A group of readers (including proudly out network/studio execs and producers) helped narrow down the list, which was then curated by Out in Hollywood’s board of directors.
“As challenges continue to present themselves against fundamental rights in our country and abroad, it’s more important than ever to continue championing marginalized voices,” says Logan Kriete, founder of the organization. “Lack of representation and advancement of our basic humanity becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy when we don’t tell these stories, and it...

Hollywood has an apprenticeship drought. In this tumultuous year, there is more work available for episodic TV writers than ever before.
Yet, industry veterans warn that the shifts toward streaming and fewer episodes per season is creating a concerning lag in the training pipeline for future showrunners.
For baby TV scribes, the chance to be “on set” during the production of their first “written by” credit can be a life-changing experience on par with marriage and parenthood. But increasingly, staffers have moved off the show’s payroll before production is completed. There’s not much time for a less-experienced writer to watch a seasoned showrunner navigate the rigors of talent relations or adjust Rookie writers miss out on opportunities to garner invaluable on-set experience on the fly on location, let alone post-production.

For many in Hollywood, it’s time to get ready for the red-eye again.
As Hollywood emerges from the Covid bubble, showrunners and other industry professionals are preparing for the return to frequent travel for shows in which the location of the writers room and the production offices are separated by thousands of miles.
The portability of production these days and the lure of tax incentives in states like New York, North Carolina and Louisiana has drawn many shows far from Los Angeles. The increasingly global nature of the content business is evident in hits like HBO’s “Succession,” which had its writers room led by showrunner/creator Jesse Armstrong in London while lensing is largely done in New York. More such set-ups are surely coming as the streaming revolution revs up content production around the world.

Georgia’s Senate runoff races on Tuesday will determine control of the chamber, a hugely important vote that could determine the extent to which President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris can enact their agenda.
That fact has been top of mind as Democratic showbiz activists pour money and time into the races of Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock at a level greater than any recent runoff election. Although this typically is time for donor fatigue, recent weeks have seen a flurry of activity, including cast reunions of Elf, Hamilton and Veep. Members of The Wire cast reunited for a virtual get-out-the-vote event over the weekend. Outside groups like MeidasTouch.com quickly set their sights on the runoffs after the November election, and on Monday night, Alyssa Milano is headlining a national call-a-thon for the group Indivisible.

Can technology and human beings become effective partners in rating Hollywood movies?
And, more importantly, should they?
Researchers at USC’s Viterbi School of Engineering think artificial intelligence has a future place in Hollywood’s ratings process. A new AI tool is intended to rate a movie’s content at the script stage, allowing screenwriters and producers to edit or adjust the screenplay to achieve the desired rating from the Motion Picture Association’s ratings board, making desired changes before the movie is shot.
The AI project focused on the presence of violence, drug abuse and sexual content, areas that traditionally play a role in a film’s rating. The tool, researchers say, has the potential to provide instant feedback to storytellers and decision-makers.
Researchers told TheWrap they are currently testing the technology with various partners to make the AI tool available soon to the general public.

Wednesday saw a unique red carpet unfold in Los Angeles. It had actors and interviewers, but there was no premiere or awards show. And the real stars were the reporters.
The reporters were 10 students from the Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies (Laces), a public high school in Mid-City Los Angeles. The occasion was the conclusion of the inaugural Micheaux Project, the outreach program launched earlier this year by Variety and the African American Film Critics Assn., designed to introduce high school students from Bipoc communities to potential careers in the entertainment industry.
Laces is the first school to host Micheaux Project workshops. The eight-week course covered such topics as film criticism, interviewing, finding a point of view and working with a newsroom. And though the students had dipped their toes into interviewing over seven previous workshops, with the virtual red carpet assembled for the final installment, the budding reporters...

The cop show is almost as old as television itself. The earliest police dramas birthed the idea of a narrative in which good (police) and bad (criminal) were clearly defined.
But fast-forward to the present and mass protests across the United States following the deaths of Black men and women including George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Michael Brown Jr. at the hands of police officers, and the role that cop shows — both fictional and nonfictional — play in forming ideology and normalizing police brutality is under heightened scrutiny.
Paramount Network recently canceled the long-running series “Cops” after more than 30 years and 33 seasons. Then A&e followed suit by axing “Live Pd,” one of its highest-rated shows. The cast and showrunner of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” made a very public donation of $100,000 to the National Bail Fund Network on June 2, in a move condemning Floyd’s killing. The adaptation of Korean post-apocalyptic film “Snowpiercer” into an American television series took a tumultuous, multiyear journey. And that was even before the coronavirus pandemic brought a dose of real-life calamity into the world right before launch.

But rather than shelve the show, the network is leaning into the unexpected timing, and has even moved up the premiere from May 31 to May 17.

Neal Baer is among the few people in the world who can list “licensed physician” and “experienced showrunner” on his resume. With that background, it’s telling that Baer’s most recent TV effort — steering the third season of Kiefer Sutherland drama “Designated Survivor” — revolved around the theme of a pandemic breaking out in the U.S.
The extraordinary global response to the coronavirus threat has appeared to lift viewership and social media traffic on the Entertainment One series, which premiered its third (and final) season on Netflix in June 2019, after two seasons on ABC.
Baer, who previously worked on “ER” and was showrunner/executive producer of “Law & Order: Svu” and “Under the Dome,” knew that the threat of a bio-terror attack and the nation’s lack of preparedness would be meaty subjects for a political drama series because they have been a growing focus for real-life public health experts.

“ER” producer Neal Baer is among the creatives teaming with Endemol Shine North America’s Authentic Entertainment on a new unscripted series entitled “The Mystery of the 1957 Gay Wedding Photos.”
The series investigates a collection of photos which are among the first to document a gay wedding in the U.S., printed circa 1957 at a neighborhood drugstore in North Philadelphia. Filmmaker P.J. Palmer and writer Michael J. Wolfe are also developing the project with Baer.
The images capture special moments between two men tying the knot, including an exchange of rings in front of witnesses, an officiant leading the ceremony, and the first kiss. The owner of the drugstore allegedly judged the photos to be inappropriate and refused to return them to the wedding couple and now, some 60 years later, the images have resurfaced and have left people searching for answers as to who the men are.

Netflix will not be picking up new seasons of D.C. drama series Designated Survivor starring Kiefer Sutherland, or freshman adult animated comedy series Tuca & Bertie, headlined by Tiffany Haddish and Ali Wong.
Netflix rescued Designated Survivor, picking it up for a third season last September after its cancellation by ABC following months of complex dealmaking. At the time, the streaming service and studio eOne made one-year deals with the cast for a third season only. Some of the actors have already moved on — for instance Kal Penn is toplining a new comedy series on NBC — but they were open to doing more Designated Survivor. The three produced seasons will continue to be available on Netflix globally.

Benjamin Charles Watson didn’t just join Designated Survivor for Season 3. No, he found himself jumping in with both feet, as White House Digital Officer Dontae Evans got pulled into the frenzy of an election campaign (and the illegal antics that can come with it), endured a daylight mugging and also tumbled into a torrid romance with Secret Service agent Troy Bae.
Watson also landed smack dab in the middle of some of the more mature themes that Season 3 embraced in its new, more liberal Netflix home — whether partaking in the saltier language or breaking down the complexities of an undetectable,...

When Designated Survivor Season 1 debuted, Tom Kirkman did not have to run for President of the United States.
On Designated Survivor Season 3, premiering Friday, June 7, on Netflix, Tom has to sway public opinion in his favor with the aim of keeping the coveted title that fell on his lap at the start of the series.
It's an interesting direction, but it also presents many opportunities for him to be skewered in the media for past actions.

President Kirkman “really screwed” up his State of the Union address to the nation — but that doesn’t mean he’s ready to throw in the towel on his first presidential campaign. Just yet, anyway.

There is a lot to process in the first full trailer for Season 3 of Designated Survivor, which hits Netflix on Friday, June 7.
For starters, you’ll see Tom Kirkman (played by Kiefer Sutherland) wonder if he has already screwed up his reelection campaign. You’ll also see who his pick for a running mate is… and the crisis that results. Hannah (Maggie Q) is offered a plum new gig with apparently very high stakes, and Seth (Kal Penn) unleashes quite a tirade about the state of journalism from the press room. In addition to Sutherland, Penn and Q, returning cast...

Beginning a TV series with everyone in the presidential line of succession being murdered in an explosion sets some pretty high expectations for the rest of the series. After two seasons of navigating the aftereffects of that consequential debut episode, the President is making his way to Netflix.
After a two-season run on ABC, the political drama is launching Season 3 with its first episodes being made directly for the streaming platform. The first trailer for the new season follows the public fallout after President Tom Kirkman (Kiefer Sutherland) derails his own bid for reelection with a confrontational State of the Union speech. Throwing his anger directly toward Congress has soured public opinion and caused the Kirkman campaign to second-guess its overall strategy.
The uncertainty looks like it’s also causing rifts for Kirkman’s staff. Stalwart speechwriter and now-press secretary Seth Wright (Kal Penn) seems to be taking the same...

The streaming service had been in talks with eOne, which produces the show, since it was canceled by ABC back in May. The political thriller was one of many broadcast TV shows to get the ax last spring during the pre-upfronts bloodbath.

Designated Survivor is living up to its name! The Kiefer Sutherland-led series has officially been spared from the chopping block and picked up for a third season, thanks to Netflix. The streaming service revived the series after ABC canceled the political drama in May due to low ratings.
According to Deadline, the third season will have 10 episodes and be a global Netflix original. The series will take on a new direction under Law & Order: Svu alum Neal Baer, who will serve as its fifth showrunner. Core cast members are set to return, including Sutherland, Kal Penn, Adan Canto, and Italia Ricci. Deadline reports that production is set to begin later this year for a season premiere in 2019, so you won't have to wait long to see more of the story.
"I am thrilled to have the opportunity to play President Kirkman for season three of Designated Survivor," Sutherland said in a statement.

Netflix, after arranging a deal to stream reruns of the first two years beginning in the fall, has given the green light for a third season of new episodes. The premise of the show is that on the night of the State of the Union, everybody in the line of succession is killed from a terrorist explosion — with the exception of Thomas Kirkman (Kiefer Sutherland), the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. This unlikely "candidate" suddenly finds himself in the position of President, and must try and pick up the pieces of the country while dealing with dissension from without and within. In Season 3, while continuing his efforts to keep the principles of democracy alive, Kirkman has a new challenge, which Netflix describes as follows: "Campaigning. What does it take to make a leader?...

Rumors had been flying since its cancelation that Netflix might swoop in and save the Presidential drama, and they are rumors no more.
Not only has the streamer saved the series, but its survival comes with a whopping fifth showrunner as the series heads into its third season.
