Byron Janis, the celebrated classical pianist who studied with Vladimir Horowitz, recorded previously unknown Chopin waltzes from manuscripts he unearthed and became a cultural hero in the U.S. after performing in the Soviet Union during the Cold War, has died. He was 95.
Janis died Thursday at The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, his wife, Maria Cooper Janis, daughter of two-time Oscar-winning actor Gary Cooper, announced.
“I have been blessed with the privilege for 58 years of loving and being loved by not only one of the greatest artists of the 20th century, but by an exceptional human being who took his talents to their highest pinnacle,” she said in a statement.
During his 85-year career, Janis covered composers from Bach to David W. Guion and performed major piano concertos from Chopin, Mozart, Rachmaninoff, Liszt and Prokofiev. He occupied two volumes of the 1999 Mercury Philips series Great Pianists of the...

Seeing as Cate Blanchett has been one of the most respected actresses for more than a quarter-century now, it’s best not to set her off. But it’s possible. And while Lydia Tár has her own musings on life, technology and Bach, what might get Cate Blanchett showing disgust than anything is trigger warnings.
Speaking with The Times, Cate Blanchett noted that difficult conversation is necessary in our society but is so rarely implemented, adding that so-called trigger warnings aren’t helping. “Culturally we are terrified of tough conversations. Boss to employee. Employee to boss. Friend to friend. But we need them. We talk about radical candour, but when there’s a trigger warning in front of something you are implying that there is a lack of mutual respect or that the subject hasn’t been properly interrogated.” Oh, we can just hear those words coming out of the mouth of Lydia Tár.

Yoko Ono co-wrote John Lennon‘s “Imagine,” one of the most popular anti-religious songs ever written. Despite this, she still spoke of The Beatles in supernatural terms, saying they were like mystics who could conjure ghosts. She also explained why the Fab Four had such chemistry during their peak years. Her comments are interesting, considering that each of The Beatles had different things to say about their spiritual lives.
Yoko Ono said The Beatles had ‘a kind of chemical’
The book All We Are Saying: The Last Major Interview with John Lennon and Yoko Ono features an interview from 1980. In it, John was asked about numerous things, but he was asked about The Beatles more than any other topic, including his solo music, his family, and his political activism. After a certain point, he said that talking about the Fab Four was boring him “to death.”

Few actors have embodied the full range of modern German history on screen as has Christian Friedel.
In Jonathan Glazer’s Holocaust drama The Zone of Interest — a dark horse candidate for the best picture Oscar this Sunday (where it is also nominated in four other categories, including best international feature), Friedel plays Rudolf Höss, the notorious commandant of Auschwitz who, together with his wife Hedwig (played by Sandra Hüller), built an idyllic villa with a pretty garden for their five children right next to the death camp.
But before Zone, the 45-year-old German actor was best known for playing famed anti-Nazi resistance fighter Georg Elser in 13 Minutes, Oliver Hirschbiegel’s 2015 drama about Elsner’s attempt to assassinate Adolf Hitler in 1939, before World War II and before the Holocaust. In 2012’s Closed Season, Friedel plays a young Jewish refugee hiding from the Nazis. And in his film debut, in...

Prosecutors in the trial involving handwritten lyrics from the Eagles’ 1976 classic Hotel California dismissed the case on Wednesday in a surprise decision that seemingly puts an end to one of the more unusual music-related criminal trials in recent years.
In the criminal case, three men were accused of conspiring to possess stolen property. That property in question was over 100 pages of drafts of songs from the Eagles’ landmark album, written by Don Henley and Glenn Frey. The trial was heading into its third week on Wednesday when, in a letter to Judge Curtis Farber,...

True crime is always a genre that dips into controversy, but HBO's upcoming docuseries "Savior Complex" is raising even more questions than usual. The documentary traces the story of Renee Bach, an American evangelical missionary, and the nonprofit she ran that has been accused of providing unlicensed - and allegedly deadly - medical care to Ugandan children. While the documentary aims to provide commentary on the white-savior complex, the trailer has prompted criticism from many who believe the documentary is platforming Bach and giving her a microphone to "defend" her actions, which is offensive considering the immense harm she allegedly caused. Before the series arrives, let's take a look at what we know about the devastating true story.
Who Is Renee Bach?
According to a 2020 article in The New Yorker, Bach was "a homeschooled missionary who had arrived in Uganda at the age of 19 and started an N.G.O.

In her adoptive country, Tina Turner was more than just a swivel-hipped rock, R&b and pop superstar. She unapologetically moved to Switzerland for its discretion and calm, carrying her very public persona into a very private country. She relished her life as a Swiss citizen — and the feeling was mutual.
It seems love’s got to do with it, too: In her 2018 memoir, “My Love Story,” Turner shared her emotion for longtime boyfriend-turned-husband Erwin Bach — a German record producer who had set up in Switzerland. She moved to join him in the mid-1990s, nearly a decade after they first met.

Tina Turner was a legend in every sense of the word, and her death at age 83 on May 24 sparked countless tributes, as well as a renewed interest in her life story. Turner's life was marked by incredible resilience, and the comeback she launched in the 1980s after leaving her abusive husband in 1976 made her a prime example of how to rise from the ashes after hardship.
Fortunately, Turner seemed to find new love and peace - as well as a new home - in the last few decades of her life. Turner died at her home in Küsnacht near Zurich, Switzerland, but she first moved to the country in 1995. As it turned out, love had something to do with her decision to leave America, but her own desire for peace and privacy also played a role.

They enjoyed a close and loving relationship, and in 2017, Bach even donated his kidney to Turner. Throughout her relationship with Bach, who she met in 1985, Turner dealt with a series of health issues. These included intestinal cancer, vertigo, a stroke, and kidney failure. In 2017, Bach donated his kidney to Turner.

Tina Turner is well-known for being a legendary singer, rock 'n' roll icon, and trailblazing artist who inspired generations, even after her death was announced on May 24. She was 83 years old. Beyond her many accomplished titles, Tina was also a mother of four with her two biological sons and two others, whom she adopted from her ex-husband Ike Turner Sr.
Tina welcomed her first son, Craig, with saxophonist Raymond Hill - who served in Ike Sr.'s band Kings of Rhythm - in 1958 when she was 18 years old. He was the only child the two shared together before Tina started seeing Ike Sr., whom she had her second child, Ronnie, with. She then adopted Ike Sr.'s two sons, Ike Jr. and Michael, whom the blues musician had from previous relationships, and raised them like her own. 12 May 2023 — Three-time Grammy® Award-winning violinist Hilary Hahn has announced her latest album with Deutsche Grammophon: a recording of Eugène Ysaÿe’s Six Sonatas for Violin Solo, op. 27, to be released July 14 on CD, a 2-lp gatefold vinyl edition, and in digital formats including a Dolby Atmos version. Composed beginning in 1923, these six sonatas are among the supreme feats of technical virtuosity in the violin repertoire. Hahn’s interpretations, recorded last fall in the lead-up to this year’s centenary, see her come full circle as a direct musical descendant of Ysaÿe himself.
“Just as Eugène Ysaÿe was inspired by Bach to write these six sonatas—and in doing so set a crucial milestone in the evolution of the violin—so too am I inspired by Ysaÿe to continually grow as an artist, to pour all of myself into this music and to commit myself fully to the pieces appearing on this recording,...

Never mind the Blues-, here are the Techno Brothers, and they are ready to conquer Japan. The music band in the film pronounced as a trio of geniuses on a par with Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, The Beatles, Miles Davis and Bob Dylan by their agent Himuro (Asuna Yanagi), consists of real life Watanabe brothers (Hirobumi and Yuji) and Kurosaki Takanori, dressed up as if they came out of the Kraftwerk impersonators' competition. In case anyone wonders, yes – they are dressed in the signature red shirts and black ties, and they perform long electronic numbers in the most unlikely of places such as a recreation park and a green house to a very small, mostly unwilling audience.
