From the ‘70s on calendar horror was all the rage with the slasher crowd; Black Christmas begat Halloween which gave us Friday the 13th and on and on, a red ‘X’ flooding the dates throughout the year. Of course we can’t forget birthdays either, so after Happy Birthday to Me we were offered Sweet Sixteen (1983), an interesting, sometimes icky film that leans closer to murder mystery than it does slasher.
Released in mid September by Century International, Sweet Sixteen got lost amid the masked mutilators and supernatural shenanigans of the day, but that shouldn’t deter any ardent fan of the era and those seeking a horror film grounded in story more than exploitation – depending on how it’s viewed.
The story of Sweet Sixteen has an air of Choose Your Own Adventure about it depending on which version you watch – the theatrical cut or the director’s cut.

— which is to say, it brings Champagne-rush sex appeal and neon-lit style to a wild case in which a crew of enterprising female dancers stripped several rich Wall Street clients of a fortune. Flashy, fleshy and all-around impossible to ignore, “Hustlers” amounts to nothing less than a cultural moment, inspired by an outrageous New York Magazine profile (which serves as the sturdy six-inch stilettos on which the movie stands) adapted by writer-director Lorene Scafaria at her most Scorsese, and starring Jennifer Lopez like you’re never seen her before.
“This whole country’s a strip club. You’ve got people tossing the money and people doing the dance,” Lopez’s Ramona tells Julia Stiles, who plays a version of nonjudgmental journalist Jessica Pressler, investigating the case. Practically everyone in “Hustlers” is playing some version of a real person, although Stiles is just about the only one whose casting doesn’t amount to a million-dollar makeover.

The first trailer for Proud Mary hit the internet in July of 2017. After that came a few badass 70s-style James Bond-like posters with star Taraji P. Henson in shadows, gun drawn. It was hard not to get excited for what appeared to be a stylized assassin flick in the vein of John Wick with a bona fide bankable black woman in the lead, Tina Turner’s emotional adaptation of John Fogarty’s anthem rocking in the background. But then the release date hit with a January bow. Critics were told it wouldn’t screen for them even in the big cities. And Thursday night shows were canceled despite ticket buyers arriving with excitement. It’s one thing to block out press, but a whole other to do so to the public.

A dreary mess of missed opportunities, “Proud Mary” isn’t quite as bad as some of the other glorified direct-to-video dreck that’s slipped onto screens in recent months (shout out to the likes of “Marauders” and “Collide”), but it’s nevertheless significantly more disappointing. This should have been a sure thing, especially at a time that feels ripe for a modified revival of blaxploitation cinema; to paraphrase Jean-Luc Godard: “All you need to make a movie is Taraji P. Henson with a gun and a good reason to use it.”
Throw in a soundtrack that can keep up with the “Empire” star’s natural swagger and you’re really cooking with gas. How the hell do you mess that up? How do you start with “‘Foxy Brown’ meets ‘John Wick’” and end up with a bargain bin action vehicle that will bore fans of either and frustrate fans of both?...

You might not remember him by his real name but instead by the name of Troy, the jerk from The Goonies that was bound and determined to make Brandon’s life miserable and wasn’t above picking on younger kids. If you don’t recall this scene from the movie that’s because it was one of the many deleted scenes that didn’t make the final cut. Troy encounters the younger boys in a local convenience store and decides to have a little fun at their expense. He was without a doubt a worse jerk than the Fratelli’s. They would at least just threaten

After five decades in show business, Cher is funnier and more outspoken than ever. She talks about Miley Cyrus, America's lurch to the right – and whether Dalí really gave her a vibrator
Cher walks into a London hotel room looking brilliantly Cher-like. She is wearing a leather jacket, tiny skirt, fishnets and big, buckled biker boots. She's got the blow-dried bouffant and pristine makeup of a pop star, but also the subtle swagger of a rock star – just witness the way she instantly dismisses the swarm of managers buzzing around her: "I hate talking with a thousand people around me."
Even more brilliant is how unintimidating Cher is. Up until a year ago that might have been a surprise, but when she joined Twitter in 2012, her public image was transformed. This, for instance, is her current Twitter biography:

Stars: Lawrence Monoson, Steve Antin, Diane Franklin, Joe Rubbo, Kimmy Robertson, Louisa Moritz | Written and Directed by Boaz Davidson
I’ve long been a fan of The Last American Virgin, no doubt due to my obsessions as a teenager with the ingenue that is Diane Franklin. Having enjoyed Better Off Dead (where she played a French exchange student Monique Junot) and then caught her “stirring” performance in Amityville 2: The Possession I was eager to see more of the sctresses ample charms. And that’s how I discovered Boaz Davidson’s The Last American Virgin…
The film follows three friends, Gary (Monoson), Rick (Antin) and David (Rubbo), as they stumble from one sexual escapade to the other, taking in nymphomaniac Latin dance teacher Carmilla (Moritz), a red-headed hooker who gives them crabs and a bevy of teenage girls eager and willing to give it up for a line of coke and a dance.

★★☆☆☆ Unlike the majority of previous films to have resurfaced via the esteemed Arrow Video label, the years haven't been particularly kind to 1982's The Last American Virgin - a grandiose title which suggests some kind of a smutty coming-of-age epic, but in reality only manages to deliver the grubby goods sporadically. Brought to the screen by infamous eighties producers Yoram Globus and Menahem Golan, the film is almost a virtual shot-for-shot remake of Lemon Popsicle, their bawdy paean to sixties American youth culture which was shot in their home city of Tel Aviv (and effectively launched the duo's careers).
Transplanting the tale of three shamefully horny teens to actual American soil - and set a couple of decades later than the original - Popsicle's director Boaz Davidson was also lured back on-board. With a budget which looks to have been mostly swallowed up by the purchasing of major jukebox hits...

Kurt here with a new Cinema de Gym, the first to focus on a movie I never knew existed before my cardio session. Is everyone familiar with Opportunity Knocks? It's a 1990 comedy noteworthy for being the breakout film for SNL alum Dana Carvey. With his straw-blonde hair styled into what I remember to be an almost-mullet, Carvey plays Eddie Farrell, a California con man whose slovenly style (oversized shirts, khakis with sneakers) is used to convey an enviably carefree outlook (as opposed to Steve Carrells's version of the same style in this week's Crazy, Stupid, Love., which is used to convey unenviable cluelessness). I entered the movie just as it was starting (another first), and got to see the unremarkable opening credits blip onto the screen as Carvey strutted down the street in his lazy dude's attire. There was no telling why he was carrying a potted plant.

You could say I like camp films. I’m a massive, unashamed fan of Moulin Rouge and of musical theatre as a whole (you may strike me down now, I couldn’t care), and I’m also a fully paid-up member of the burlesque scene fan club- so I must love Burlesque, surely?
But wait… Cher? Christina Aguilera? Something must be wrong here. And mark my words, something is very, very wrong here.
It’s certainly got the glitter and the sequins, but the film feels a lot like they thought that, plus the “wow” factor of Christina Aguilera and Cher being involved was enough to paper over the huge, yawning gaps that are all over the movie. But nothing could hide the fact that the script is terribly cliched, the acting stunted and one-dimensional and the musical set-pieces oddly off-putting. I’m pretty sure they wanted it to be a story of female empowerment,...

Chicago – If a musical miscalculation as epic in ineptitude as Steve Antin’s “Burlesque” is considered eligible for a Best Musical or Comedy Award, then the Golden Globes are officially advised to a.) Retire the outdated category, or b.) Retire the entire hopelessly corrupt awards show. Either decision is guaranteed to prove beneficial in the long run.
“Burlesque” is the sort of turgid pop star vehicle that has its own built-in applause track. Characters repeatedly assure each other of their brilliance while lame gags are rewarded with extreme close-ups of audience members spitting up water into the lens. Every frame reeks of desperation, as glittery divas Cher and Christina Aguilera struggle to solidify their reputations as movie superstars. Yet while Cher has already earned her stripes as a gifted actress, the big-voiced, dead-eyed Aguilera has unwisely chosen this film to make her acting (if you can call it acting) debut.

Film: ‘Burlesque’, Director: Steven Antin; Cast: Cher, Christina Aguilera, Alan Cumming, Stanley Tucci, Cam Gigandet; Rating: ***
Much like the ‘nautanki’ in India, burlesque was a form of fun music, dance and comedy that kept America entertained from the mid 19th century to the 1960s. The film, that takes its name from this form does just that, without being serious about itself.
Aspiring to become a dancer, Ali (Christina Aguilera) leaves her small town.

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation has announced its nominees for the 22nd Annual GLAAD Media Awards. It unraveled on Thursday, January 20 that Emma Stone-starring teen comedy movie "Easy A" and Lea Michele-led musical comedy series "Glee" are among those getting a nomination.
"Easy A" will compete for Outstanding Film in the Wide Release category. This Will Gluck-directed film is up against Lisa Cholodenko's lesbian family drama "The Kids Are All Right", Steven Antin's musical "Burlesque", Daniel Alfredson's crime thriller "The Girl Who Played With Fire" and Edgar Wright's video-game-inspired "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World".
The Limited Release category, in the meantime, pits prison romance "I Love You Phillip Morris" against "Howl", the much talked-about movie about the life and works of 20th century American poet, Allen Ginsberg. They are also listed along with Peter Bratt's "La Mission", Ella Lemhagen's "Patrik,...

Alec Baldwin and Jennifer Lopez present Diane Warren with the Golden Globe for Best Original Song – Motion Picture. The winner was Warren's "You Haven't Seen the Last of Me" from Steve Antin's musical Burlesque, starring Cher, Christina Aguilera, Stanley Tucci, and Twilight's Cam Gigandet. Burlesque caused quite a sensation when it was nominated for a Golden Globe in the Best Picture – Comedy or Musical category. Considering that the film itself was shortlisted, some were surprised that Cher didn't get a Best Actress nomination as well. In her acceptance speech, Warren thanked Cher for her efforts in keeping the winning song in the film. Photo: © HFPA. Click on the image to enlarge it.

Diane Warren was the 2011 Golden Globe winner for the song "You Haven't Seen the Last of Me," sung by Cher in Burlesque. Steve Antin's campy musical co-stars Christina Aguilera, Stanley Tucci, and Cam Gigandet. In addition to its Best Song nod, Burlesque earned (an eye-brow raising) nomination for Best Comedy or Musical of 2010. In her acceptance speech, Warren thanked Cher for fighting to have the song incorporated into the film and then fighting to keep the song in the movie. Warren had been previously nominated for Golden Globes for her songs in Pearl Harbor (2001), Up Close & Personal (1996) and a couple of others. Burlesque was her first win. Photo: © HFPA. Leonardo DiCaprio, Marion Cotillard in Christopher Nolan's Inception (top); Cher, Christina Aguilera in Steve Antin's Burlesque (bottom) The Social Network, Natalie Portman, Colin Firth: Critics Choice Awards Predictions In all likelihood, Christopher Nolan will take home the Best Original Screenplay for Inception, which should also top the Best Cinematography (Wally Pfister), Best Art Direction (Guy Hendrix Dyas, Larry Dias and Doug Mowat), Best Editing (Lee Smith), Best Score (Hans Zimmer), Best Sound, Best Visual Effects, and Best Action Movie categories — thus becoming the evening's top winner. Even though it's ineligible for this year's Oscar, expect The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo to win as Best Foreign Language Film because it's by far the most popular movie in that otherwise undervalued category. Lee Unkrich's Toy Story 3 will win for Best Animated Feature. Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland should top the Best Costume Design (Colleen Atwood) and Best Makeup categories.

2010 was an unremarkable year in Film; brilliance was isolated. Prominently a year of superb acting: Leonardo DiCaprio gleamed in both Shutter Island and Inception; The Social Network had the most outstanding cast: Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield, and Rooney Mara; Ryan Reynolds’ performance piece in Buried; Emma Stone’s iconic teen role in Easy A; Chloe Grace Moretz’s beautiful evil in Let Me In and Hailee Steinfeld robust close-up in True Grit. Also, good direction excelled voluminously in films by Christopher Nolan, David Fincher, Edgar Wright and the Coen Brother’s.
Sadly, there were only sporadic injections of greatness in film; at this moment in cinema there should be a bastion of inspiration – with the complexity of the world, ideas and contemporary special effects. There is less of a harmony of all the great elements in films these days. Cinema is about escape; it’s a foolish notion that just...

Tron: Legacy (PG)
(Joseph Kosinski, 2010, Us) Jeff Bridges, Garrett Hedlund, Olivia Wilde. 125 mins
Less a brand-new vision of the future than an upgrade of the old one, this reboot delivers digital thrills beyond your wildest electric dreams, but ties itself in knots with an analogue-era plot. There's sleek, sexy design, gladiatorial arcade game action and Daft Punk-scored retro styling, but questions pile up as Hedlund seeks to rescue his long-lost Zen-spouting dad (old Jeff Bridges) from Tron-world and its evil techno-führer (young Jeff Bridges).

Who is Steve Antin?
Much like the oft-asked rhetorical question from Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged ("Who is John Galt?"), it is not one that will provide you with any conclusive answers to the mysteries of our world, like how a movie like Burlesque got funding. But the answer is that Steve Antin both wrote and directed this Cher-Xtina sh*tshow, and that's who he is.
In the interest of full disclosure, I would like to mention I was both drunk and heavily drugged during the screening of this film.
