After being diagnosed with cancer, Dallas actor Larry Hagman went on a vegan diet. It was his co-star Linda Gray who suggested he make the switch.
"When I was diagnosed, Ms. Gray said, 'Well you've got to be a vegan now.' I said, 'Are you kidding?' She says, 'No it'll help you. It'll get rid of all those steroids with meats and turkey and chicken and beef and stuff and it'll cleanse your body," Hagman said.
Grey helped Hagman find a personal chef who makes sure the actor follows his new diet.
"So [Gray] got me a chef named Nancy Anderson who knows more about vegan diets than anybody in the world I've ever met," Hagman said. "She put me on this diet. I drink these diet things and they're kale and spinach and cucumber."...

Bobby Steggert and Ivan Hernandez in the Off-Broadway premiere of Yank!
(Photos credit: Carol Rosegg)
You know, they just don't make musicals like Yank! anymore.
And that's a real shame, because Yank!, now in previews at the York theater, succeeds on just about every level that a musical can.
The show opens with a present day San Franciscan kid finding a journal in an old junk shop, and upon reading it is sucked into the world of which it speaks: the life of an innocent young World War II private named Stu. We see the army through Stu's eyes, and in the grand tradition of old-school musicals like South Pacific, boot camp is the perfect place for a bunch of green soldiers to burst into cleverly choreographed song and dance.
And that's really what's so refreshing about Yank!. In an era of ironic, self-aware musicals, where much of the comedy...

"I'd say that actors appear to be more serious about their craft. With all the great training, schools, etc., I've found that those who really desire to learn come and live here." -- James Dickson Manhattan "The community. You see the same actors at every audition, you bump into friends on the street, and you never feel alone in the struggle. It's easy to make friends, and it's easy to see the choices to make. Everyone around you is working toward the same goals, so the community starts with the first audition you go to. Even the horrid lines you wait in for non-Equity summer stock are part of the journey -- that's where you can make friends for life!" -- Nancy Anderson Manhattan "My friend Joe wrote a play, and he wanted to hear it out loud. And in a couple of short emails, he assembled a table reading...
