Many credit Disney’s Haunted Mansion, as well as the mainstreaming of the horror genre and the increasing commodification of Halloween, for creating the modern haunted house industry. And yet, the movies based on the ride will leave you with the same question: Does Disney even understand its most popular attraction?
The Haunted Mansion is essentially a “ghoul tour,” dating back to the 19th century–to Madame Tussaud’s gruesomely guillotined aristocrats and the exaggerated torture porn found onstage in the Grand Guignol. The public has always–and will always–pay good money to be frightened out of their wits. Walt Disney, a consummate showman, knew this from the birth of his career; Mickey Mouse followed his 1928 debut in Steamboat Willie with a trio of horror shorts: the creepy Haunted House, (1929), The Mad Doctor (a Frankenstein spin-off) and The Gorilla Mystery (no less than a Disney Murders of Rue Morgue...

Robert Downey Jr. had serious discussions with action star Sylvester Stallone about doing an Edgar Allen Poe movie. But Stallone wasn’t sure Downey might have been a big enough star for the film to work.

At the height of Stallone’s career, the famous Rocky franchise wasn’t the only material the actor was focused on. His growing megastar status didn’t distract Stallone from his passions as a writer. So Stallone was still penning a variety of scripts during and after his Rocky success.
One of those scripts focused on the life and death of one of history’s most influential literary authors.
“The one thing I’m not gonna do is, I’m not gonna be Eugene O’Neill and write about my private demons.

We’ve covered plenty of obscure films available on iTunes in previous From VHS to VOD columns but Apple’s digital service is not the only VOD service making waves into the strange and obscure – there’s plenty of odd, unseen and unreleased (well unreleased on disc formats) films available on Amazon Video.
Unlike iTunes, a lot of the more obscure titles are only available for streaming rather than purchase, though the wide variety of films you don’t, and probably won’t see elsewhere makes up for that. Like iTunes there are some truly obscure films hidden away in the depths of Amazon’s vast collection of movies. Some of which have been made available in the UK for the first time since VHS and a Lot that have been added to the service in their original uncut form!
So, with that said here’s highlight some of the best (well,...

First off, here's a poster for serial-killer-thriller The Raven that showcases John Cusack... thinking? Oh, but I'm sure that since this is the story of Edgar Allen f***ing Poe helping to track down a murder inspired by his stories he's thinking about something suitably grisly and serious. I mean, look at him. He must have just realized a vital new clue in the case, something essential such as: "You know, I could really go for a glass of Amontillado right...

On the audio commentary for his Pixar film ‘The Incredibles’, director Brad Bird proclaims that he will punch the next person he hears refer to animation as a genre rather than an art form. Often belittled as an attraction aimed primarily at young audiences, over the past decade animation has found a wider and more adult audience on the big screen. World cinema has acted almost as a breading ground for animation directors creating vibrant, emotional, funny and engaging films. Chico & Rita from Spain, Persepolis from France and Waltz with Bashir from Israel were all award winning, highly regarded and best of all, widely distributed animation films aimed at an adult audience. Pixar’s Up, a computer-animated feature, even opened the Cannes Film Festival in 2009! So why is it that at this exciting time two of North America’s most interested and talented animation directors take the leap from one...

Today is the 162nd anniversary of Edgar Allen Poes death and to commemorate the event theres a whole lot of The Raven action going on. While marking a death date rather than a birth date may seem macabre, considering the subject at hand it seems more than appropriate. Earlier this morning the trailer hit and a little bit later a group of journalists was ushered onto a conference call with the film's director James McTeigue and star Luke Evans to discuss the film. "Evans plays a detective who partners with Poe (John Cusack) to search for a serial killer who has kidnapped the author's fiancee (Alice Eve) and has gone on a murder spree that mimics the author's work." Hit the jump to check out some excerpts from the interview interspersed with some cool Edgar Allen Poe factoids.

The trailer for John Cusack’s The Raven is so Raven, the only way the film could be more Raven is if Raven-Symoné was cast as Poe. And why wasn’t she? The Disney star probably would have been a better pick to play the famous mystery author, considering Cusack seems to be on Bearded Autopilot for most of the trailer.
Set to be released March 9 of next year, the film revolves around Edgar Allen as he works with Baltimore authorities to solve a string of serial killings that seem to be based around his gruesome fictional stories, in addition to romancing a beautiful blond played by Alice Eve. Granted we’ve only seen a few minutes of the film, but part of us thinks they might as well as have cast Nic Cage in the lead role. Oh, now that would have been Raven.

Haywire Kicks into Hall H Mod: Anthony Panel: Stephen Soderbergh, Gina Carano, Channing Tatum Mod: What's weird, there's a bunch of Hershey kisses up here, anybody want them? Oooops, I almost hit someone! I have a question for Hall H...do you like scary stories? Okay, that's a yes. Do you like girls that kick ass? Those are the best kind. What I love about Comic Con is that we are all bound by a common love of story telling. Relativity brings together very two cool movies together. These two movies exist because of two real life people who if they existed in the same time and place they probably wouldn't have a lot in common. Here is mixed martial arts fighter Gina Carano who inspired Stephen Soderbergh to create Haywire. Its a kickass movie! Then we have The Raven and Edgar Allen...

In today's India Times, Oscar-winning (for Slumdog Millionaire) sound recordist Resul Pookutty discusses an intriguing-sounding new project on which he's just signed, a film about a real-life incident that happened to Edgar Allan Poe, starring as Joaquin Phoenix as the legendary writer. Get the deets after the jump. "It is a very special challenge," says Pookutty in The Times, "because I have to recreate the sound textures of New York in 1854. It's an adaptation of The Beautiful Cigar Girl by Daniel Stashower and based on an eerie real-life experience of author Edgar Allen Poe which happened just months before his death. Edgar Allen Poe.s famous quote .Sleep, those little slices of death; Oh how I loathe them. really makes the dream state seem creepy. Dreaming, of course, is a normal part of the sleep pattern, but that hasn.t stopped science-fiction and horror visionaries from exploring the possibilities of this state of being. Dreaming is a part of the consciousness that we frankly know little about. It has been examined by great minds such as Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung. Certainly, the sleep process and its varying stages have been thoroughly researched, and sleep clinics treat people with various sleep disorders. Medications fill pharmacy shelves helping people achieve a good night.s sleep. Book stores and library shelves have no shortage of books that not only detail the sleep process, but attempt to apply ...
