Thank You For Coming
Starring Bhumi Pednekar, Shehnaaz Gill, Dolly Singh, Kusha Kapila, Shibani Bedi
Directed by Karan Boolani
In my favourite moment in this amiably anarchic rom-com, the well-behaved utterly devoted fiancé to out uncontrollable tantrum-throwing heroine, after she breaks their engagement , says to her, “Don’t worry about me. I am happy the way I am. It is you I am worried about.”
What does one do with the craziness of Kanika Kapoor?
Amidst all the beery, blaring bacchanalia and shrieks of inebriated joy Thank You For Coming has a sensitive heart beating gently, reminding women that the biological clock need not dictate the way they lead their lives.
Bhumi Pednekar, in a rousing performance, plays Kanika Kapoor the youngest in a family of women where the grandmother (Dolly Ahluwalia) is chilled out but in a restrained way. The mother played with passionate intensity by Natasha Rastogi is the wild one.

There is a visible dearth of chick flicks, and more so, films that celebrate woman and womanhood happen few and far between. ‘Thank You For Coming’ is one such film with a gang of girls who smash the patriarchy and share such a bond that they talk about everything – life, life-partners, individual problems and so much more. For the uninitiated, the pun in the title might be a hint for the audience, especially the extrovert females, about a sense of what they can expect – female friendships, relationships, marriage, dating, sex, orgasms, et al.
Tyfc (Thank You For Coming) opens up about men getting wrong or rather misunderstood thinking women don’t have needs at all. It seldom occurs to them that women too, crave for sexual pleasures.

When it seems that every Indian or Pakistani romance coming down the pike centers on the traditional patriarchal values of arranged marriages and dowry (even when their message is about escaping those constraints), finding a story that refuses to use such notions as anything more than a distraction proves refreshing in the best way. Because that’s what it is for Kanika Kapoor (Bhumi Pednekar) in Karan Boolani’s Thank You for Coming. She’s rejected that path her entire life. The only reason she’s even considering it now is because she’s already tried everything else. Well… almost everything else.
Despite the synopsis for Radhika Anand and Prashasti Singh’s script distilling it down to Kanika’s alcohol haze making her forget who helped her reach her first orgasm at age 32 on her engagement night and the subsequent adventure to discover the culprit’s identity, that event doesn...

Funko is making its move into the makeup business with the recent acquisition of cosmetics company HipDot, which will release a collection inspired by Netflix’s smash-hit “Wednesday” as its first project under Funko ownership.
The cosmetics line is just one of several offerings in an upcoming collaboration between Funko and the Jenna Ortega-led MGM TV series, with products that span Funko’s iconic Pop! figurines, as well as its Loungefly accessories and high-end collectibles from its Mondo brand.
Per Funko, “Celebrating Wednesday Addams’ allergy to color and inspired by the Nevermore Academy uniform, Loungefly’s new accessories will feature a grayscale color palette. Featuring a stripe pattern, the mini backpack, crossbody, wallet, and cardholder are made of twill with a vegan leather trim. The collection will also include a mystery box of pins inspired by Wednesday; and makeup items, marking Loungefly’s first forray into the category.”

Bollywood has found a safe haven on the streaming platforms and is hell bent upon exploring themes that were earlier either forbidden or had no takers. After the huge success of ‘Vicky Donor’, a film about sperm donation, a number of so-called taboo subjects have found their way into mainstream narratives. ‘Shubh Mangal Savdhan’ on erectile dysfunction, ‘Padman’ on menstrual hygiene and ‘Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui’ on gender diversities, to name a few.
In the latest, ‘Chhatriwali’, the themes are male contraceptives and safe sex. No harm in dealing with a subject that may not be still discussed openly in families, although everyone seems to be aware of condoms in big and small towns alike.
Set in Karnal, Haryana, the film is about Sanya Dhingra (Rakul), an unemployed chemistry whiz, who is looking for a job and uses her skills to fight an important social taboo by taking sex education classes for young people.

BellBottom
Starring Akshay Kumar, Lara Dutta
Directed by Ranjit Tiwary
I braved Covid to see Bell Bottom. The attendance was not unimpressive. Considering…. The atmosphere was subdued, almost reverent. I could hear murmurs all around me about returning after two years, etc etc.
The mood was that of a temple. Sadly BellBottom rings too many familiar bells. It doesn’t really match up to the expectation of the expectant crowds, some of who had almost forgotten what a movie feels like in a theatre. BellBottom is halfway exhilarating.
Aptly, much of the plotting and planning takes place in the prime minister’s chamber. Prime Minster Indira Gandhi, that is. Yes, this is the 1980s when bell bottoms were already on the way out. Perhaps the fact that the hero, a reluctant Raw agent named Anshul Malhotra, played by the habitually equanimous Akshay Kumar, goes by the code-name BellBottom is an...

A film on surrogate motherhood for Mother's Day. Sounds just like what the doctor ordered. And?Badnaam Gali, now streaming on ZEE5, does mean well. It displays an exacerbated empathy for the unwed mother, played with endearing artlessness by Patralekhaa, who is a target of vicious gossiping in her Delhi locality.
She is of course not what she seems. Never! And it takes a rough rural Punjabi bloke to set her reputation right and earn himself the honour of being the first social reformist of the live streaming platform, a la Guru Dutt (Pyaasa) and Sunil Dutt ("Sujata?and Sadhana).
Redeeming the 'Fallen Woman' has always been a looming concern in the patriarchal setup of Indian cinema. Making films about women who have restored their dignity through the good offices of a 'progressive' male, makes the patriarchal entertainment industry feel good about itself.

I wonder why filmmakers shy away from narrating tales about elderly people with senior actors in the lead roles.
Well-narrated stories revolving around ripe old age have takers, but such efforts are few and far between.
Remember how much everyone appreciated and enjoyed watching the funny mother-in-law and daughter-in-law's bantering and drinking sessions in "Vicky Donor" played by Kamlesh Gill and Dolly Ahluwalia respectively?
And how can we forget middle-aged doctor Baldev Chaddha, essayed by Annu Kapoor to the hilt, who was central to the hit movie on sperm donation that released in 2012 and pleased all and sundry..

That Bollywood is starving of a good comedy is no breaking news. Between ‘strictly adult’ tagged sex comedies and the slapstick ones, it’s been a while since we’ve had a good clean laugh-out-loud film. With the promos look as promising as ‘Bajatey Raho’ did, does the movie deliver as promised?

Film: "Bajatey Raho'; Cast: Tusshar Kapoor, Vinay Pathak, Ranveer Shorey, Ravi Kishan, Brijendra Kala; Director: Sashant Shah; Rating: ***
For the second time this week Ravi Kishan gets it bang-on. Playing a vicious entrepreneur with a marriageable daughter, Kishan is an energetic ball of agile evil.
The same goes for the rest of the arresting ensemble cast of very capable actors who get into the mood of the con-job without fuss and with a flair for acting funny without toppling over into parody.
I call it Fukrey-land. Welcome again to the comic world of lovable losers. The cast here is older, if not wiser than in "Fukrey". Mummyji (delightfully droll Dolly Ahluwalia) and her family of sons and son-like wanderers.

Time and again, Honey Singh has been dragged into the limelight for all the wrong reasons but then how does one justify the hoards of offers that he is flooded with from Bollywood to compose music. After hearing Honey Singh’s next romantic track for Shashant A Shah’s Bajatey Raho titled, ‘Kudi tu Butter’ with which he will also make his debut as a singer in Bollywood will change nothing but add another feather to his hat. Yo Yo Honey Singh who is known to feature in songs and rap in between has for the first time sung an entire song. Mumbai, July 8: Roping in Dolly Ahluwalia as the leading lady for "Bajatey Raho" didn't entail any risk, says director Shashant Shah and adds that she is running the show.
"I was very clear about it. I wanted a very strong woman in the film and I was convinced that Dolly will pull off the role very well. She is the heroine of my film who is running the entire film. I didn't see any risk factor in casting her as the lead in my film," Shah told Ians.
He further added: "Hats off to Eros, backing the project, who agreed to my idea. I told them, I want her to be in the front in all the posters. She is the mastermind in the film."

“Mere paas Ma hain!” This iconic line once defined an a whole age of cinema (mainly the 60s and 70s) which was dedicated to upholding the mother’s wishes but is one which – according to actress Dolly Ahluwalia is deteriorating in this new era of film, where the focus is at times on the ‘item’ numbers of a film rather than the actual plot itself (Tees Maar Khan anyone?).
“There are not many roles for senior artists currently, and the significance of mother in present films is lost. The mothers of the 1960s used to play central characters but now we are losing that”, Dolly stated in a recent interview.
Dolly Ahluwalia who recently starred in, Vicky Donor and Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana, says that there are fewer roles for senior female artists nowadays.
The actress said that earlier roles for women used to be much stronger, but not anymore.

"As an actor I can't draw lines. I take up every project as a challenge, but the character has to be real. I enjoy doing real characters. I cannot be artificial. When I speak of being real, the script has to touch me deep inside," Ahluwalia told Ians.
After her role, she gives importance to the director and co-actors.
"Once the script is there, then the director matters and co-actors too...if I am giving the best, then the other person should be able to receive.
