Exclusive: Johnny Canales, the famed Tejano singer and Mexican American TV host who passed away on June 13, is the subject of Take It Away, a new feature doc from Adrian Arredondo and Myrna Perez that has entered production.
In a moment when Latino music and artists like Peso Pluma, Grupo Frontera, and Bad Bunny are dominating the charts, the film explores the origins of Latin music’s rise through The Johnny Canales Show — a space where, beginning in the 1980s, every Latino in America felt seen, free to be unapologetically themselves, and part of a larger movement.
Ushering in the golden age of Tejano music and the “Decade of the Hispanic,” Canales and his TV show became a microcosm of the Latino experience in America.
The film will be exec produced by Texas Monthly and Trojan Horse Media, as well as Arredondo and Perez. CAA Media Finance reps worldwide distribution rights.

Sam Mendes is bringing back his acclaimed, Tony Award-winning blockbuster production of The Lehman Trilogy for a fourth run in London.
It’s quite a thing to bring the play, considered a modern classic, back into central London when it just played a 16-week season at the Gillian Lynne Theatre, running until May of last year.
“There’s an enormous appetite for the play, even more so because its been on screen in cinemas via Nt Live,” noted Caro Newling who runs the theater division of All3Media-owned Neal Street Productions, founded by Newling, Mendes, and Pippa Harris.
The new production, produced by the National Theatre and Neal Street, will return to that same Gillian Lynne stage for a limited 14-week slot from September 24 through January 5, 2025. It will be featuring the incredible rotating glass-box scenic design created by Es Devlin, dynamic videos designed by Luke Halls, and stunning lighting design by Jon Clark.

They say every dog has its day, but one pup featured on America’s Got Talent has something else—four standing ovations from the Judges. The Israeli-born Roni Sagi and her beloved border collie, Rhythm, bow-wowed judges Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum, Sofia Vergara, and Howie Mandel with a canine routine so impressive that it brought everyone to their feet. Cowell couldn’t help but compare Roni and Rhythm’s dancing Act to the unforgettable AGT Season 18 winners, Adrian Stoica and Hurricane. Comparison to Past Winners Cowell asked if Roni and her trusted companion could top the former. Adrian is a friend of ours,...

Created by Joko Anwar, the Netflix’s anthology series, Nightmares and Daydreams, is made of seven seemingly disconnected episodes. But with each passing story, it becomes clear that all of them are connected via the shenanigans emerging from the mythological realm of Agartha. As the legend goes, Agartha is a kingdom that exists somewhere between Earth’s surface and hell, I guess. I’m sure you are familiar with the concept of the hollow Earth theory that has been popularized by MonsterVerse. So, think of it that way. Agartha is a world between worlds and is apparently home to demi-gods, also known as “asuras.” This connecting thread doesn’t become all that apparent until the seventh and last episode. But since there are subtle and not-so-subtle hints to the existence of Agartha, and how its inhabitants influence the surface dwellers, bear with me as I go episode by episode to...

Episode 3 of Joko Anwar’s Nightmares and Daydreams seems like a supernatural version of Brie Larson’s 2015 film, Room. In the third episode, Joko Anwar introduces a character named Rania Dewi, who is struggling to write another best-seller after the success of her first book, Poems and Pain. As the episode begins, Rania is seen promoting her second book, “Period,” which doesn’t go well with the public and the critics. But her publisher and close friend, Hendra, requests that Rania work on the Poems and Pain sequel. Rania doesn’t want to write anything like Poems and Pain again because the writing process on her first work left her emotionally and physically drained. It was a dark phase in Rania’s life, and she started to lose her mind, which was why she didn’t want to continue the story of her lead character, Laras Andini. However, after the success of her first book,...

“America’s Got Talent” season 19 continued Tuesday, June 11 with another two-hour episode of first-round auditions. Once again, this season’s hopefuls are judged by executive producer Simon Cowell on one end of the dais and Howie Mandel on the other. Seated in the middle are Heidi Klum and Sofia Vergara, with Terry Crews on stage as the lively host.
In the audition phase of “AGT,” an act needs at least three of the four judges to give them a “yes” vote to advance to the next round. If two or more judges buzz the act, they are immediately eliminated. For the first time ever, each judge has not one, but two chances to hit the “golden buzzer” and send an act straight through to the live performances. Terry had one chance of his own, totaling nine acts overall that will earn the special path to the final phase of the competition.

The Rocky movies are pretty synonymous with cinema. You’ve got every kind of movie you could want, the intimate Academy Award-winning underdog original and its closely knit sequel, the fun and cheesy spectacles of Rocky III and Rocky IV, the misguided attempt to recapture its roots with Rocky V, and the old war horse, broken down, one-last-fight inspiration of Rocky Balboa. The story behind the first movie is as engaging as the movie itself, which is why it will be the subject of a new movie from Peter Farrelly called I Play Rocky.
Blu-ray.com has unveiled that Warner Bros. Home Entertainment will now be releasing the Rocky series, sans Creed spin-offs, with the new 4K Ultra HD Rocky: Ultimate Knockout Collection. The set will encompass all versions of the commercially released films in Uhd, which includes both the theatrical version of Rocky IV and the recut Rocky Vs.

In a September 12, 1997 piece for The Wall Street Journal titled “Gridiron Feminism,” Camille Paglia argued that not only is football “congruent with an enlightened feminism,” but that the sport “is one of the best educational tools for showing women how to advance in the ‘hostile workplace,’—which current sexual harassment regulations try to control through intrusive, after-the-fact legal remedies.”

More photos from the set of The Witcher season 4 have been shared online, and this time we have an actual first glimpse of Liam Hemsworth suited-up as Geralt of Rivia!
The recent third season of Netflix's fantasy adventure series was original Geralt actor Henry Cavill's last, as the Man of Steel star announced his decision to part ways with the streamer's adaptation of the best-selling novels back in 2022.
Hemsworth (The Hunger Games) will take over as the titular monster hunter from season 4 on, and a recent photo from the set featured his stunt-double Joel Adrian in-costume. Adrian looked enough like Hemsworth to fool a lot of people, but these snaps spotlight the man himself.
The photos show Hemsworth as Geralt doing battle with Vilgefortz (Mahesh Jadu), and appear to be recreating a scene from season 3 which saw the mage emerge victorious. There is also one shot of Geralt...

Up until 2023, The Witcher was one of the best book-based storylines ever transformed into a live-action series, and one of the biggest reasons behind its tremendous success was Henry Cavill’s effortless performance as the Geralt of Rivia. But then Cavill was replaced, with Liam Hemsworth becoming the new protagonist of the lore — though not without earning much backlash from fans.

That being said, one of the actors from the saga, Freya Allan, seems to be quite bothered with the hate Hemsworth has been getting ever since he was announced to be the new White Wolf, even though he hasn’t even performed as the character yet. But while she continues to campaign hard for him, the latest leaked set images of the series have garnered further backlash from fans.

Hell broke lose in late 2022 when it was announced that Liam Hemsworth would be replacing Henry Cavill in The Witcher, and season 3 would serve as Cavill’s swansong from the IP. This led to a not-so-small portion of the fandom reviewing bombing season 3 upon its premiere, with some even stressing that the show should end with Cavill’s departure.
But despite the pushback from the fans, Netflix has persisted with its decision and greenlit two more seasons for The Witcher, and the filming for the fourth one began not very long ago. And the new leak from the sets has given fans how Hemsworth’s Witcher would appear in the show, which has failed to impress fans of the series.

Mother’s Day means a lot of things — and for many, it means a chance to grab some wire hangers and rekindle a love for the 1981 camp extravaganza “Mommie Dearest.” Starring Oscar winner Faye Dunaway as Oscar winner Joan Crawford, the movie adaptation of a memory by Crawford’s adopted daughter, Christina, was intended to be a serious drama. An awards-bait biopic. Anne Bancroft was attached, initially!
But things went awry, as they always do in the making of a camp classic. And while we wait for Dunaway to address the movie anew in the upcoming “Faye” documentary about her life and career premiering at Cannes, we have A. Ashley Hoff’s making-of book “With Love, Mommie Dearest: The Making of an Unintentional Camp Classic” to tide us over.

Spoiler Alert: This story discusses plot elements from “The Idea of You,” which is now streaming on Prime Video.
“Don’t you miss those bombastic, blown out pop choruses of the 2010s?” asks Savan Kotecha, the executive producer behind the music of August Moon — the fictional boy band at the center of “The Idea of You,” a new romance film on Prime Video based on a novel by Robinne Lee.
Nicholas Galitzine plays Hayes Campbell, the lead singer of August Moon, who falls in love with an older woman and single mother Solène (Anne Hathaway) after she brings her daughter to the group’s meet-and-greet at Coachella.

General Hospital fans tuned into Thursday’s (May 2) episode may have noticed something a little different about Aiden Webber; well, that’s because a brand new actor has taken over the role. Tristan Riggs, whose credits include Walker and True Lies, has taken over from Enzo De Angelis as Elizabeth Webber’s (Rebecca Herbst) son, Aiden. He made his first appearance in Thursday’s episode, and according to Soap Opera Digest, he will be playing Aiden moving forward in a permanent recasting. Aiden was born on-screen on July 19, 2010, as the son of Elizabeth and Lucky Spencer (Jonathan Jackson). Seven actors have previously portrayed the character, including twins Adrian & Brett Ritter (2010-11) and Maximo & Finbar (2011), Titus Jackson (2011-12), Jason David, and De Angelis (2021-24). Riggs marks the eighth actor to take on the role. The switch comes after Aiden recently came out as gay to his mom. Riggs will inherit a...

The thread, which has more than 20 million views, contains clips from a film titled Forbidden Desires: Alpha’s Love, about a college professor named Adrian who falls in love with his student, who also happens to be his stepsister. Also, Professor Adrian is a millionaire. And a werewolf.
The plot begs a number of questions: Why does a werewolf millionaire need to hold a salaried job as an academic,...

“Satan is his father and his name is Adrian!” shouts the coven leader Roman Castevet at the end of 1968’s. Rosemary’s Baby. “He shall overthrow the mighty and lay waste their temples. He shall redeem the despised and wreak vengeance in the name of the burned and the tortured.”
Even when making allowances for Roman’s (Sidney Blackmer) understandable delight at seeing his plan come to fruition, that’s a lot of expectation to put on a newborn, no matter who his father might be. Unfortunately, the sequels chronicling Adrian’s rise to power didn’t quite live up to those expectations. Neither the 1976 TV movie Look What’s Happened to Rosemary’s Baby, in which Patty Duke subs in for Mia Farrow, nor original author Ira Levin’s follow-up book Son of Rosemary (1997) manages to deliver what Roman promised.
But for the next film branching out of Rosemary’s Baby,...

Just like the first season, James Gunn has written every episode of Peacemaker season 2, but he won’t be able to direct as many this time around as he’s in the midst of directing Superman. “Yes, I’ve written all the episodes; but, no, in the interest of getting the show out there I won’t be able to direct them all (only some),” Gunn said last month. He added that that will be “three other great directors joining me for the season.“

These days it seems like everyone is on TikTok or has a YouTube channel. Simply talking to a camera and posting the video online will get you likes and follows and can also be your ticket to being an internet celebrity, which may or may not be a good thing. Far too many people are willing to do whatever it takes for online fame. There have been countless internet challenges leading people to film themselves doing all sorts of outrageous things, sometimes resulting in injury or death. In the age of internet culture, people have no shame and no fear, especially if it will make them famous.
In Epic Pictures’ Ghost Game, not too long after meeting on a dating app, deciding they were compatible and moving in together, Vin (Zaen Haidar) discovers his new girlfriend, Laura (Kia Dorsey), has been secretly breaking into houses at night to play the Ghost Game internet challenge.

This article contains spoilers for "Immaculate."
From the late 1960s to the 1970s, religious horror cinema reigned. Free of the censorious Hays Code, Hollywood could be transgressive again. Americans were generally more Christian 50 years ago than they are today, so scary movies where the horror literally comes from the Devil? Those struck right at the heart of the public.
"Immaculate" is the new convent-set horror film directed by Michael Mohan and starring Sydney Sweeney as the Messiah-bearing Sister Cecilia. It's also a throwback to those mid-20th-century religious horror movies. Yes, "Immaculate" takes narrative beats Dario Argento's witchy giallo "Suspiria" too (though with much earthier lighting) — an innocent American girl flies to Europe and discovers a sinister plot at the communal house she stays in and must narrowly run/fight her way out. As for what that conspiracy is though? "Immaculate" takes more after 1968's "Rosemary's Baby." Mohan thinks so,...

Grant Page, the larger-than-life Australian stunt performer famous for his jaw-dropping work in films including Mad Max, The Man From Hong Kong and Mad Dog Morgan, has died. He was 85.
Page died Thursday when the car he was driving near his home in Kendall on the coast of New South Wales hit a tree, his son Leroy Page told Daily Mail Australia.
Page worked with director Brian Trenchard-Smith on more than a dozen projects, including The Stuntmen (1973), King Fu Killers (1974), The Man From Hong Kong (1973) — where Page fights martial arts expert Jimmy Wang Yu in scenes using knives, cleavers and meat hooks — Deathcheaters (1976), Stunt Rock (1978) and Hospitals Don’t Burn Down! And for the documentary Dangerfreaks (1987), Trenchard-Smith filmed Page standing on a ledge outside the perimeter fence on the observation deck of the Empire State Building in New York.

As she delved deeper into the case, Tess uncovered a financial scam involving the owner of “the 313” restaurant, where Adrian used to work, and those people were responsible for the murder. The fourth episode centers around the murder of Olivia Banks, who worked at a delivery service and was murdered by one of her coworkers. While the investigation unfolds, the episode also explores the personal growth of Detective Tess and her trusted partner, Sunny Patel, from the EyesUp app. Sunny grapples with unresolved issues from her past relationship with her husband, while Tess contemplates joining the police force despite facing numerous challenges along the way.

The producers of “Dancing With the Stars” are responding to the controversial casting of Sean Spicer (Season 28) and Adrian Peterson (Season 32), among others.
“We’re a silly ballroom dance show, we’re teaching people how to cha cha. The country is divided, so half of the people may have one political view and the other half have the other. At the core of it, we always just go for nice, good people,” executive producer Deena Katz told Variety following ABC’s unscripted panel at the Television Critics Association press tour on Saturday.
Katz added that former White House press secretary Spicer became friends with many members of the cast during his time on the show. However, there was a great deal of controversy amid his casting, with former host Tom Bergeron among those expressing disappointment over how the show was being politicized.

The third episode of Sight Unseen left me thoroughly impressed and eagerly anticipating what twists and turns the series has in store. From the moment Adrian Temple’s body was discovered on the riverbanks, I was hooked. The layers of drama, suspense, and mystery woven throughout the episode kept me on the edge of my seat, eagerly anticipating each new revelation. What truly struck me was the meticulous unraveling of Adrian Temple’s identity by the detectives. But what really resonated with me was Tess Avery’s personal journey throughout the episode. Her determination to confront her impaired vision head-on and strive for self-reliance was incredibly inspiring. It was heartening to see her gradually come to terms with her condition, accepting it as a part of who she is rather than something to be hidden or ashamed of. I particularly admired how Tess embraced the support of her colleagues, especially Jake,...

The sixth episode of “America’s Got Talent: Fantasy League” aired Monday, February 5 on NBC with the first set of 10 Semi-finalists returning to the big stage to compete alongside the judges. At the end of the episode, three contestants advanced to the Finals round: Musa Motha via Simon Cowell‘s Golden Buzzer, V.Unbeatable via Heidi Klum‘s Golden Buzzer, and Shadow Ace via the audience vote. That meant seven acts were eliminated with no chance of winning the $250,000 grand prize.

Ginger Zee shared a throwback photo to play along with a fun trend on social media.
It might be hard to envision the Good Morning America personality with a “big” belly, but she posted proof that, at one point, she did have one.
Taking to Instagram over the weekend, Ginger had some fun with a template in her Instagram Stories, uploading a flashback photo from one of her pregnancies.
The template asks Instagram user to add a photo of themselves to pay tribute to their “big” bellies.
The 43-year-old meteorologist uploaded her photo, which depicted her casually brushing her teeth while showing off her pregnancy belly.
She lifted her orange t-shirt in the bathroom selfie to reveal her large baby bump as she smiled at the mirror.

It's been almost 50 years since "Rocky" first arrived in 1976, and in that time the franchise has changed dramatically. The "Rocky" saga has now grown beyond original star Sylvester Stallone, with Michael B. Jordan's "Creed III" barely mentioning the man who birthed the now legendary film series. Whatever you think about that, everyone can surely recognize the staying power of the "Rocky" movies, which have formed part of our pop cultural history for the better part of a half century.
None of this could have happened without the first entry in the saga, of course. "Rocky" introduced the world to the scrappy Southpaw from South Philly, who led a film that was remarkable for its realism and affecting performances. Much of that was down to Stallone who, having written the script during a particularly challenging time in his personal life, insisted on starring in the film, only to wow audiences...

I thought Lifetime Network was trying to head in a different direction after Dying in Plain Sight, which dealt with something as severe as atypical anorexia. But My Husband’s Seven Wives, their latest, seems like business as usual for the network, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, the timelessness of My Husband’s Seven Wives is a bit too in your face, which, I suppose, is the whole point. It’s not that the movie ends with any kind of ambiguity, but in case you have some doubts after watching it, I’m here to help. In typical Lifetime thriller style, a young woman gets randomly kidnapped right after finishing a run on a dark, gloomy evening. Neither the woman nor us get to see the kidnapper, unsurprisingly.

“AGT: Fantasy League” continued on January 22 with the fourth set of 10 performances in “Qualifiers 4.” The new spin-off series marks the return of former judge Mel B as she joins Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum and Howie Mandel in a head-to-head competition to mentor an all star ‘AGT’ act through the season to victory. Terry Crews is back once again for hosting duties.
Over eight weeks of shows, the judges’ Dream Teams of 10 will be narrowed down until only one stands as the newest AGT champion and takes home the $250,000 cash prize. That act will also give their mentor the first coach’s win in AGT history. In the four qualifiers, 10 acts perform with one receiving the week’s Golden Buzzer and five others advancing to the next round based on an audience vote.

Few television characters felt more appropriate to revisit in the covid era than Tony Shalhoub’s Adrian Monk, the brilliant homicide detective who suffered from debilitating obsessive compulsive disorder. Though the original run of “Monk” ended in 2009 long before the pandemic began, the character returned — like TV detectives including Angela Lansbury’s Jessica Fletcher — in a movie titled “Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie.” For his encore performance in one of his most beloved roles, Shalhoub could return to the Screen Actors Guild Awards.
According to our current combined odds, Shalhoub ranks just outside our top 10 in 11th place in the Limited/Movie Actor category. Though his movie doesn’t have the buzz like the projects of top contenders Steven Yeun (“Beef”), Jon Hamm (“Fargo”) and Matt Bomer (“Fellow Travelers”), the celebrated actor is already earning awards recognition for his performance, netting a Critics Choice Award nomination last month...

This week sees the launch of Like a Magic Spell, a new podcast which aims to unlock and share the joy of Abba.
Using the popular song-by-song format, host Adrian Stirrup (he/him) and guests deep-dive into how Abba’s songs were created and what the music means to them.
His guests for the first season include Abba superfans, journalists and the host of the Official Eurovision Song Contest Podcast, Steve Holden. As well as discussing the emotional heft of Abba’s music, they have fun dissecting the visuals of the promo videos and the sometimes-hilarious YouTube comments under the videos.
The podcast has been deliberately timed to coincide with a big year for Abba fans. 2024 sees the 50th anniversary of Waterloo winning the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest – the start of their domination of popular music that lasted well into the 1980s.
Arguably, their cultural influence has never been stronger, especially...

Chicago – Arguably, the last great movie star was Burt Reynolds. His everyman attraction, his accessibility and of course his box office made Reynolds a compelling force during his peak in the 1970s. The CW Network will show the doc “I Am Burt Reynolds” on December 30th, 2023, directed by Adrian Buitenhuis.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
With a career in Hollywood dating back to the last days of the studio system, 1950s/60s TV westerns, and hanging with the Rat Pack, Burt Reynolds epitomized Hollywood superstardom while never ceasing to be a Florida “good ole boy.” From his beginnings in TV and low budget films, through to his breakout roles in “Deliverance,” and “The Longest Yard, onto the smash hit “Smokey and the Bandit” and box office dominance, “I Am Burt Reynolds” remembers an era and the man who defined it.

John Legend and his partners at Get Lifted Film Co. are bringing some uplift to audiences with their inspiring new HBO documentary Stand Up & Shout: Songs From a Philly High School.
The film, now streaming on Max, explores an innovative music program at Hill-Freedman World Academy in Philadelphia that pairs students with local musicians who help the kids write, produce, compose and perform original songs. It culminates in the creation of an album recorded by the students that – as HBO puts it – “captures the challenging times they’re living in and the joy that music brings.”

We all make moral decisions when we engage with art, consciously or not. For some, an element of a film’s moral makeup crosses a line and makes it reprehensible. This can be in relation to the fiction of the piece or the real world events that took place surrounding the movie. If you, Dear Reader, have such strong moral convictions and/or are sensitive to taboo topics in your movies, then The Crush is not going to be the ‘90s horror flick for you.
Because The Crush is pure sleaze on the screen and even ickier behind the scenes.
The story alone will likely draw a line in the sand for more than a few potential viewers. Journalist Nick Eliot rents a guest house from a well-to-do family and runs into (almost literally) their 14-year-old daughter, Adrian. Adrian becomes smitten with Nick and his behavior doesn’t exactly discourage...

One of the most recurring trends in Hollywood right now is the horror remake, and for better, or worse, it isn’t gonna disappear (pun intended) anytime soon. David Gordon Green’s The Exorcist remake may have been met with a geyser of pea soup from the mouths of critics and fans alike, but that isn’t slowing the trend down for the foreseeable future. The Halloween franchise has been picked up by Miramax with the intention of creating a TV series, and a possible cinematic universe, and that’s just hot off the heels of Halloween Ends, erm, ending the recent trilogy with somewhat of a whimper.
