- [on Steven Spielberg] Spielberg isn't a filmmaker; he's a confectioner.
- I was the person who brought Mars Attacks! (1996) to the attention of the studio. They were bubblegum cards I had as a kid. I developed Mars Attacks! (1996) with Jon Davison, the producer of RoboCop (1987), for quite a while, but at some point my project got shut down and it was given to Tim Burton. It was a bit of a shame, but I think both the script that I wrote and the Tim Burton one suffered from not being enough like the bubblegum cards.
- Highway Patrolman (1991) is the first film I directed [that was] shot - almost - entirely in long takes...what the Mexicans call "plano secuencia". It's the first film I directed in Mexico. It's the first film I directed where I rigorously followed the script. It's probably my best film, and I'm delighted that Kino Lorber have given it a new 4K restoration and are bringing it back to the cinemas, in the US and - I hope - Mexico. [2018]
