In early May, sandwiched between the NewFronts and the traditional broadcast (and now streaming) upfronts, a new showcase for pitches to major advertisers will make its debut.
Billed as The Way Upfronts, the series of virtual presentations slated for May 7 and 8 is a hybrid of the annual springtime spectacles of ad-supported television and the supercharged energy of a festival marketplace. Plans call for making them quarterly, in-person events, with next month’s launch edition meant to increase visibility at a time when talent will already be making the rounds and fully emerging from a strike-impaired 2023.
Oscar-winning producer and manager Michael Sugar’s company, Sugar23, is leading the new initiative, which has secured attendance from brands representing some $120 billion in spending. Those Madison Avenue dollars are drawn to the talent in the Zoom. While organizers have not shared the names of presenters to the public, the host committee for the event includes Scarlett Johansson,...

Larry David reflected on his 24 years and 12 seasons of working on HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” sharing with the guys at “Smartless” that he only had buyer’s remorse for casting actors who were bad a improv “a couple of times.”
“It’s only happened a couple of times in the show where people were trying to be funny. And that’s, like, the worst thing you can do,” David told Jason Bateman, Will Arnett and Sean Hayes (the latter of whom actually guest starred on the comedy’s final season earlier this year) on Monday’s podcast episode.
“Not many,” he said, “but there have been a few who really couldn’t do it.”
Loosely fictionalized around David’s own life as an actor and writer in Los Angeles, “Curb Your Enthusiasm” costarred Cheryl Hines, Susie Essman, J.B. Smoove, Jeff Garlin and the late Richard Lewis and was famously improvisational,...

What if Superman had turned out to be evil? That was the idea explored by director David Yarovesky’s super-powered horror film Brightburn, which was released back in 2019. Even though the movie made under $33 million at the global box office, the budget was low enough (somewhere in the range of 6 to 12 million) that producer James Gunn said they were talking about a sequel just a couple months after the film reached screens. Then we went a long time with no mentions of Brightburn 2 – until production company The H Collective, which was also behind Brightburn, confirmed that a sequel was in development last September. Things got confusing last month when Gunn took to Threads to say there are “no plans at all” for a Brightburn 2 right now… but Gunn has cleared up some of the confusion by revealing that a sequel is unlikely due to a complicated rights situation.

Prince will be the subject of a new jukebox musical movie distributed by Universal Pictures, with Black Panther filmmaker Ryan Coolger set to produce.
The script was written by Bryan Edward Hill, who previously worked on television series Titans and Ash vs. Evil Dead.
The news was first reported by Jeff Sneider and confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter.
Prince, who died in 2016, has a long cinematic history. 40 years ago this July, Warner Bros. distributed his classic film, Purple Rain. In recent years, he’s been a popular potential subject for projects, including an Elizabeth Banks-starring film that was hinted at in 2018 and an upcoming stage adaptation of Purple Rain.
As for additional details about the forthcoming jukebox musical — like casting, release date, and more — we’ll have to wait and see. If they haven’t nailed their leading actor yet, perhaps a scene akin to SNL’s 2021 Prince biopic skit is playing out now.

Zach Galifianakis has been cast in Season 4 of Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building,” Variety has learned.
Like recently announced cast member Kumail Nanjiani, Galifianakis’ role in the mystery-comedy series is currently kept under wraps. However, an individual with knowledge of the situation can confirm his character is “integral to the twist and turns of this season’s investigation.”
The three series leads remain Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez as true crime-obsessed neighbors that get caught up in real cases. Additional new faces in Season 4 include Eugene Levy, Eva Longoria and Molly Shannon. Meryl Streep, who first appeared in Season 3, will also reprise her role. Little is known about the upcoming season aside from the fact that the mystery-solving trio will make a trip to Los Angeles before returning to their native New York.

Oscar week is finally here! Ask anyone who has been in the thick of awards season and they’ll likely let out a huge sigh followed by exasperated admission that this has been one of the most hectic runs in recent memory. The condensed calendar, forced by last year’s dual strikes, could translate to more lively bashes, however, as there’s light at the end of the tunnel with Sunday’s Oscars. That can only mean that champagne is currently popping at A-list bashes across Los Angeles, and The Hollywood Reporter is on the scene everywhere from Vanity Fair and Elton John to MPTF’s Night Before. See below for the roundup of all the red carpet action.

Despite the open disdain expressed by lead stars Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, The Twilight Saga is embarking on a new show. The news could come as a bit of a shock to viewers who remember Pattinson openly roasting the series every chance he got and Stewart making every effort to distance herself from Bella Swan’s image.
Both actors have made a concerted effort to move away from the $3.3 billion blockbuster franchise that made them household names. Pattinson has ventured into more complex, edgier roles in mainstream films (Tenet), while Stewart has also made her name in challenging roles (Still Alice) in indie projects as well.

So, despite the cast’s dislike for the franchise, Twilight is getting a new show? It could be a case of nostalgia, or the makers see the potential for expanding the Twilight universe beyond the original films.

Cooper, whose biographical drama Maestro has been awarded seven Oscar nominations ahead of this year’s Academy Awards, was speaking at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, when he looked back to his brief time on the hit show, back in 1999. On Thursday, we predicted that this weekend would look the same as the previous two weekends with the only shake up coming by way of the fourth and fifth spot (Migration and Anyone But You) switching positions. Well, there may be another position switch as currently Mean Girls and The Beekeeper are locked in an epic battle of wills where each film is currently looking at first place with around $6.4 million in projected weekend grosses.
That would be quite the feat for the Jason Statham/ David Ayer pairing. Numbers have finally come in for this weekend and much like we said in our Thursday predictions, this weeks top five will be a repeat of last weeks champs. That leaves Mean Girls coming in first place with what is looking like an $11 million weekend, representing a drop in the 60% range which makes sense when you consider the films so-so audience score (currently at a 66%). It seems that 94% audience score is helping sell some...

Adam Schiff, Katie Porter and Barbara Lee and Republican Steve Garvey on the same stage, the coming weeks will see an accelerated schedule of events, advertising and fundraising.
