Director Sam Raimi’s film Darkman was first released in 1990, and in recent years Scream Factory has brought that movie and its direct-to-video sequels Darkman II: The Return of Durant and Darkman III: Die Darkman Die to Blu-ray. Last month, the company announced that they’ll be giving Darkman a 4K release on February 20th – and since then they’ve revealed that this release will include deleted scenes that weren’t on their previous Blu-ray release of the film, plus a fan commentary by Scare Me and Werewolves Within director (and Darkman superfan) Josh Ruben!

Before he made his Spider-Man trilogy and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but after he unsuccessfully tried to get the job directing a Batman or The Shadow movie, Sam Raimi made his debut in the superhero world with a character he created: Darkman. Raimi’s film Darkman was first released in 1990, and in recent years Scream Factory has brought that movie and its direct-to-video sequels Darkman II: The Return of Durant and Darkman III: Die Darkman Die to Blu-ray. Veering sharply away from the visceral horror that put him on the map, Wes Craven followed up the game-changing The Last House on the Left and The Hills Have Eyes with the one-two punch of the silly, surreal Deadly Blessing and the comic-book adaptation Swamp Thing. An enjoyable enough romp if taken as an amiably lunk-headed action flick, Swamp Thing starts off with an effectively mounted first act that soon gives way to a lot of splashing around in the swamps, punctuated with some incongruously poetic (and oddly endearing) Beauty and the Beast-type moments, and liberally peppered with all the airboat crashes and cigar-chomping David Hess close-ups you could ever want. Add to that running tally Adrienne Barbeau doffing her wardrobe for some tastefully lensed skinny-dipping and an ultra-suave, Nietzsche-spouting turn from Louis Jourdan as villainous Dr. Anton Arcane and it all adds up to a surefire cult film in the making.

Mvd Entertainment will release Swamp Thing on July 25th , presenting 4K Uhd and Blu-ray editions that contain both the US theatrical PG cut, along with the unrated international version of the film:
Press Release: Swamp Thing is an American superhero horror film written and directed by Wes Craven, based on the DC Comics character of the same name created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson. It tells the story of a brilliant scientist, Dr. Alec Holland and a government agent, Alice Cable who have developed a secret formula that could end world hunger and change civilization forever. Little do they know, however, that their arch nemesis, Arcane is plotting to steal the serum for his own selfish schemes. Looting the lab and kidnapping Cable, Arcane douses Holland with the chemicals and leaves him for dead in the swamp. Mutated by his own formula, Holland becomes “Swamp Thing” - a half...

Just a couple days ago, DC Studios head James Gunn announced that a Swamp Thing movie will be part of the first slate of DC films he will be producing as he reboots the DC Universe. Yesterday, we heard that Logan director James Mangold is in early talks to direct the Swamp Thing movie. So today seemed like the perfect time to release a new episode in the Revisited video series that looks back at the 1982 film adaptation of Swamp Thing (watch it Here). To find out all about the version of Swamp Thing that reached theatres over forty years ago, check out the video embedded above.
The 1982 Swamp Thing was written and directed by legendary genre filmmaker Wes Craven. His film has the following synopsis: Deep in Florida’s darkest everglades, a brilliant scientist, Dr. Alec Holland, and a sexy government agent, Alice Cable, have developed a secret formula...

We’ve got a ton of great titles on the docket for this final week of home media releases in August. Michael Dougherty’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters is hitting various formats on Tuesday, and if you’re looking for some oddball entertainment, The Banana Splits Movie should undoubtedly do the trick. In 2015’s Curve, starring Julianne Hough, the pervert drifter antagonist stomps her phone, snuffing out its electronic life and hampering her escape plans—no further explanation required. A phone ends up in a punch bowl in David Gordon Green’s Halloween to explain its later critical absence, disappointing given the original’s iconic phone scene (a ghostly Michael Myers murders Lynda with the cord).
The babysitter lifeline, the emergency call, originated in London in 1936. According to a BBC report, “Police stations during the 1920s and ’30s were often receiving too many visitors alerting them to emergencies.”
While first responders immediately embraced the utility of the technology, there were concerns on the consumer side. According to the book America Calling: A Social History of the Telephone to 1940, in 1919, North American Bell executives were concerned that they “never thoroughly educated the public to the possibilities of the use of the telephone.”

Slaves Of Hollywood - A 1993 film about Hollywood Assistants ripped from today's headlines, sort of.
by Terry Keefe
Back in the mid-90s, Michael Wechsler, Brian Grossman, and myself collaborated with a bunch of great young actors and crew for this micro-budgeted feature film about tortured Hollywood assistants. Alex Simon makes a few cameos also!
As we were going for "theater of the absurd," and (mostly) dark laughs, it isn't the perfect companion to today's headlines, but some of the milieu will be familiar. The stories about Harvey Weinstein abounded even then. In total honesty, I had great bosses in Hollywood, and the film is all based on stories we had heard about Other bosses. The ones you didn't want to work for. There but for the grace of God went we. But Meryl Streep did later call Harvey "God," so it all gets confusing.
We shot this two years before Kevin Spacey tore up the screen as the abusive producer in Swimming With Sharks,...

What an amazing week for TV fans. As if you didn’t have enough stacking to do with the new, brilliant season of “House of Cards” on Netflix, there are four other full seasons in this week’s What to Watch that you really should watch front to back. And then there’s the still-amazing “Darkman,” a cult classic that perfectly captures Sam Raimi’s skill at controlled chaos. Finally, we have two ’80s horror flicks in one set in “Bad Dreams” and “Visiting Hours.” Check ‘em all out (Ok, you can skip the genre stinkers).

“Don’t Answer the Phone!” (1980) Film Review
Directed By: Robert Hammer
Written By: Michael D. Castle & Robert Hammer
Starring: James Westmoreland (Lieutenant Chris McCabe), Ben Frank (Sergeant Hatcher), Flo Lawrence (Doctor Lindsay Gale), Nicholas Worth (Kirk Smith),
I honestly didn’t know what to expect by watching another movie that has the infamous “Don’t [do this]” in the title. I was pleasantly surprised; despite its imperfections, it was better than I thought it was going to be. I tend to be a lover of these type movies so I can certainly understand the dislike. The movie was first released on VHS by Media Home Entertainment and released several years ago on DVD. Don't Answer the Phone! reminded me of another movie that came out the same year: “Maniac.”
The plot revolves around an ex-Vietnam vet and current photographer who goes around strangling women. The killer Kirk...

Two cinematic blasts from Hollywood’s not-too-distant Cold War-inspired past are re-packaged together as a post-apocalyptic tag team on this two-for-one offering, which was made available by the folks at Image Entertainment just a few weeks ago (release date December 13, 2011). Each feature on this single-sided disc comes with its own title screen, scene selections, and a theatrical trailer. The DVD itself plays a few other vintage trailers (C.H.U.D., anyone?) before the main film selection menu. Otherwise, it’s all a pretty bare bones affair. But with mega-blockbusters like these,...
