- Violin virtuoso from early childhood. Later toured as jazz violinist, then formed his own jazz trio, the 'Rhythm Aces', in the 1920's. Performed on radio for NBC and CBS.
- Long with MGM as conductor, arranger and musical director (1937-1966). Most notably associated with the Arthur Freed production unit. Stoll worked on many of MGM's most lavish musicals, winning an Academy Award for Anchors Aweigh (1945). Also conducted "The Trolley Song" in Meet Me in St. Louis (1944). Retired after 1964.
- Composed the "Cyclone" music for "The Wizard of Oz" 1939.
