A nurse meets a doctor for coffee and there's some flirting and he comes across as charming. Cue her running and screaming on train tracks after being attacked. The man she was with turns out to be serial rapist Andrew Jenkins (Daniel Sujata). Now in prison, Cal (Tim Roth) goes in as an inmate to garner the identity of the copycat and picks a fight with another prisoner. Cal is beaten with Andrew watching. Gillian explains since Andrew is a pathological liar he can't be interrogated in the same manner. Cal ignores him at mealtime and sits at the same table. When Lie to Me returns for its third season, Cal Lightman and his team of lie-detecting scientists will be freed from their ties to Ben Reynolds and the FBI.
But while the show's producers made that decision to allow Lightman (Tim Roth) to take on different kinds of cases, will the lack of checks and balances prove dangerous for the Lightman Group?
Lie to Me: End of the line for Lightman and Reynolds
"We are leaning into Lightman's general conflict with power and authority," executive producer Alexander Cary tells TVGuide.com. "In the first episode of Season 3, he goes too far. He sails extremely close to the wind...

The second-season finale of Lie to Me doesn't play as your typical cliffhanger, but it does bring about some big changes for the show. Chief among them: The departure of Mekhi Phifer's FBI agent Ben Reynolds from the series.
Executive producers and Season 3 showrunners Alex Cary and David Graziano made the decision to broaden their stories and character development.
Lie to Me taps new showrunner
"It hobbled us a bit," Cary tells TVGuide.com of the FBI's watchdog attachment to the Lightman Group. "It put Lightman [Tim Roth] into the sort of one-note position of having to roll his eyes. It became unsurprising, because we knew he was going to go and do whatever he wanted to do anyway."
"Lightman is like that kid in the back of class who used to sit with his feet up on the back of the desk and snarl at the teacher. He subverts authority and the FBI represents that,...

Mekhi Phifer will reportedly not appear in the third season of Lie To Me. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the show's executive producer David Graziano suggested that Phifer is leaving the series for creative reasons. He explained that the Lightman Group will no longer work alongside the FBI, meaning that Phifer's character Special Agent Ben Reynolds will not be involved in the new storylines. "We're going rogue a little bit," Graziano said. "Lightman [Tim Roth] is going to act slightly in the more old-school Pi model of a TV protagonist, [so] we're doing away with the FBI contract [and] Mekhi is unfortunately no longer going (more)...

Just when FBI Special Agent Ben Reynolds starts seeing the light of the Lightman Group, this has to happen.
Mekhi Phifer's Ben Reynolds character will not be a part of the Fox's 'Lie to Me' in season 3 due to a change in the dramatic structure of the show. The Lightman Group, which is able to detect criminals through their body language and non-verbal clues, is severing ties with the FBI in season 3, according to a report from the Ausiello Files.
Consequently Phifer's Reynolds will no longer be needed to act as a liaison between the agency and the Lightman Group, headed by Tim Roth's Dr. Cal Lightman.

Most people cannot tell from demeanor or body language when others are lying — this is best left to the experts. From executive producers of “24″ and “Arrested Development” comes “Lie To Me,” a drama of a deception expert who helps uncover the truth for the FBI, local police, law firms, corporations, and individuals. Season two arrives on DVD November 9 from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment.
“Lie to Me” stars Oscar® nominee Tim Roth (“The Incredible Hulk”, “Reservoir Dogs”) as the cheeky Dr. Cal Lightman, the world’s foremost expert on deception specializing in detecting facial micro-expressions and involuntary body-language to determine if and why someone is lying. Dr. Lightman heads the Lightman Group, a private agency assisting federal law enforcement, government agencies and local police with their most difficult cases. Joining Dr. Lightman in his work is an all-star cast of Dr. Gillian Foster (Kelli Williams, “The Practice”), a gifted psychologist; Eli Loker (Brendan Hines,...

Dr. Cal Lightman's (Tim Roth) talent is reading people's facial expressions and body language. He's the human "lie detector," and according to him, his process is flawless. But this week, when his former mentor Helen Dezkis (Rowena King) calls him in to do a lecture for her students, Lightman meets Martin Walker (Jason Dohring) and sees that his flawless process might just have a few cracks. Well, at least when it comes to reading psychopaths. Martin participates in a little experiment where he describes a picture to Lightman, and then the good doctor will tell him if he's "full of it" or not. The experiment backfires on Lightman, and after misreading Martin's cues twice, Cal is left with the proverbial egg on his face and owing the guy $200. The main draw of this show is Tim Roth’s impeccable portrayal of the grating, egotistical Dr. Lightman, and I am very...

Before the extended hiatus, Lie to Me (TV) resident deception detecting genius, Cal Lightman (Tim Roth) faces down a disgruntled farmer with a tractor load of explosives mere blocks from the Lightman Group’s building and down town Washington D.C. The farmer is complaining that due to the downturn in the economy, he lost his farm, which had been in his family for three generations. He wants to talk to the president, or he’ll set off his trailer load of explosives, which would effectively decimate the downtown area and everyone in it. Despite his partner, Gillian Foster (Kelli Williams)’s objections, Lightman strolls down to have a little chat with the irate would-be bomber, to see if the threat is real or not. Meanwhile, a group of third graders on a field trip to the Lightman Group is stuck in the building while the threat is on, and...
