The sidelines at the University of Colorado football games have resembled Grammy and Oscar week in L.A. since Deion Sanders, aka “Coach Prime,” took over as head football coach this season. A-listers from Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson to Lil Wayne, Rick Ross and Kawhi Leonard have shown up to see the Buffaloes run the field, and the star power is poised to continue as the team takes on UCLA at the already sold-out Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena on Saturday.
“I can assure you as a sports commentator and reporter for years, I’ve never had any reason to talk about the University of Colorado football,” says Stephen A. Smith, host of ESPN’s First Take. “Never thought about it until he arrived there. I’d never been to Boulder, Colorado, in my life. I’ve already been there twice. Ok, let's be honest - did we really expect the MTV VMAs, of all award shows, to deliver the best hip-hop 50 tribute of the year? The "all-star finale performance" MTV touted ahead of the Sept. 12 event included Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne, LL Cool J, Dmc (of Run-d.M.C.), Doug E. Fresh, and Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five as performers. The 10-minute tribute intended to honor the culture's entire 50-year history, but with a lineup that shallow (and New York-skewed), is that even possible?
The VMAs aren't alone: it seems every award show's hip-hop 50 tribute has missed the mark this year. The Grammys kicked off the milestone celebration in February with an old school-meets-new-school performance, which featured everyone from Missy Elliott, Busta Rhymes, and De La Soul to Lil Baby, GloRilla, and Lil Uzi Vert. The BET Awards followed suit in June with a "non-stop party" of medley performances from folks like Warren G,...

Recognition of hip-hop’s 50th anniversary has been in full force throughout 2023, but writer Kiana Fitzgerald’s celebration started almost a year early, in February 2022. That’s when she began crafting Ode to Hip-Hop, out now on Running Press. Her debut book chronicles “50 albums that define 50 years of trailblazing music,” spanning nearly the entire timespan of the genre: as early as Kurtis Blow and as recent as Megan Thee Stallion (who joins Lil Wayne, Lil Kim, Missy, Tupac, and Lil Nas X on the Yay Abe-illustrated book’s cover).

The 2023 BET Awards honored the 50th anniversary of hip-hop with dozens of performances that played like a musical family reunion as pioneers of the genre blazed the stage during a hostless but party-filled show held during the writers strike.
The Sugarhill Gang, Big Daddy Kane, Mc Lyte, Doug E. Fresh, Erick Sermon and Keith Murray performed Sunday at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, celebrating rap music and honoring its roots as well as its domination in pop culture.
Ja Rule, Red Man, E-40, Master P, Fat Joe, Remy Ma, Styles P, T.I., Fabolous, Trick Daddy, Trina, Uncle Luke and Skillz hit the stage, helping the four-hour-show flow during the writers strike, which several presenters acknowledged before giving out awards, including Grammy-winning singer Muni Long.
“Let’s take a moment to acknowledge and stand in solidarity with the artists who make us laugh, cry and, most important, think — our Writers Guild of America family.

Juneteenth, which falls on June 19, commemorates the fall of slavery in the United States.
It celebrates the anniversary of the order made by Major General Gordon Granger on June 1965 that proclaimed freedom for slaves in Texas. The order was actually made two years after Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.
In a tweet Monday, former President Obama explained it as the “delayed but welcome news of freedom reaching the enslaved Black folks in Galveston, Texas.” In 2021, President Biden made Juneteenth a federal holiday.
Many networks are marking the occasion with Juneteenth TV specials or movie marathons showcasing Black talent and/or excellence. See our viewing guide below:

William Wyler’s Dead End made its screen debut on Aug. 27, 1937. The film adaptation of Sidney Kingsley’s Broadway play starred Sylvia Sidney and Joel McCrea, and featured Humphrey Bogart in third billing. But the movie was stolen from them all by a gang of upstart juvenile delinquents, who nicked audience attention like a fancy watch mugged off a clueless rich brat.
Billy Halop, Huntz Hall, Gabe Dell, Bobby Jordan, Bernard Punsly, and Leo Gorcey were the original teen menaces who terrorized theatergoers when the play opened on Oct. 28, 1935. Directed by the playwright, Dead End ran for 684 performances, and is still the longest-running play in the Belasco Theater’s history. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt saw it three times.
Nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture, Dead End isn’t the greatest gangster movie of all time. It followed the classic era of the genre; it was produced by Samuel Goldwyn for MGM studios,...

Five months after Master P’s daughter, Tytyana Miller, died, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s office has confirmed the cause of her death.
According to the official coroner’s report released on Tuesday, Miller died from fentanyl intoxication on May 27, confirming reports that the 25-year-old had died as a result of drugs.

George Floyd was remembered by family and friends at a memorial service on Thursday that mixed poignant memories and humorous moments of his life with calls for genuine social justice.
The Rev. Al Sharpton, speaking to a crowd of family members, friends and political leaders, told mourners that “for those who agendas that are not about justice, this family will not let you use George as a prop.”
Speaking of props, “I’ve never seen anyone hold a bible like that [and] I’ve been preaching since I was a little boy,” said Sharpton in a veiled reference to President Trump. “If he is watching, I’d like him to open that Bible and reach Ecclesiastes 3: ‘To every season, there is a time.’ I’d like him to understand what time it is.”
“Ya’alll talk about making America great, said the reverend. “Great for who and when?”
“We gonna make America great for everybody.

When Master P decided to make I Got the Hook-Up 2, studios didn’t exactly jump at the chance to finance a sequel to an urban comedy that grossed $10 million at the box office in 1998. The rap mogul wasn’t deterred, though, and instead put up his own money to produce the film, and tapped into the power of social media to fill the cast and market it.
“The studios are not going to let us in,” Master P, real name Percy Miller, told Deadline this week. “They don’t understand that it’s a market for urban movies, urban comedies, all of that.”
Bob Johnson’s Urban Movie Channel in partnership with Rlje Films released I Got The Hook-Up 2 in theaters and VOD on July 12.
The sequel, directed by Corey Grant, grossed $149,036 from 37 theaters its opening weekend, a per-screen average of $4,028.

In mid-summer, 2019 finally delivered a breakout specialized hit. Lulu Wang’s Sundance breakout “The Farewell” (A24), which is neither a documentary nor a wide release, drew a stellar response from arthouse moviegoers. Produced in America and set in China, this family dramedy marks one of the best platform openings ever for a film outside the year-end awards season. That the movie comes from a little-known director makes its initial response all the more gratifying. The standard arthouse release formula can still work.
Bleecker Street also scored better than average initial results for “The Art of Self Defense” with an eclectic set of initial theaters. A24 is on a roll, as “The Farewell” joins the still-limited “The Last Black Man in San Francisco” (A24) in fighting to keep the specialized narrative brand alive.

The Farewell (A24) – Metacritic: 89; Festivals include: Sundance, San Francisco 2019
$351,330 in 4 theaters; PTA (per theater average): $87,833
