Exclusive: For at least the last three years, Latino Hollywood has been abuzz about a Chalino Sanchez biopic that has been in the works though nothing solid emerged — until now.
The new indie film Chalino will tell the story of Rosalino Sánchez Félix, better known as Chalino and “El Rey del Corrido,” an antihero who achieved superstardom and attained legendary status for his contributions to the popularity of the Regional music subgenre Narcocorridos.
For the lead role, David Castañeda was the standout among thousands of Latinos who auditioned for the role, sources tell Deadline. He has been circling the role for months with talks currently heating up, we hear. However, no deal has been signed. Production is said to be targeting the start of production for later this year.

A gritty Los Angeles crime drama that (very) slowly becomes a kind of “Batman in the barrio,” Ben Hernandez Bray’s “El Chicano” seldom amounts to anything more than a crude prototype for the kind of Latinx-driven superhero movies that Marvel and DC should already be making by now. Maybe, if Hollywood didn’t so consistently underrepresent the country’s most significant audience of non-white moviegoers, Bray would have been able to scrounge up more than $7 million for his chintzy-looking debut. Maybe, if backwards industry logic didn’t require people of color to substantiate their own existence, this cheesy (but ultra-violent) vigilante saga might’ve been more than a proof-of-concept for an idea that never should have needed one in the first place (Bray and producer Joe Carnahan were forced to finance the film with Canadian oil money after local investors large and small balked at the idea of an all-Latinx cast).

The superhero film craze has proven to be popcorn-pleasing box office gold over the last several years or so within Hollywood circles. Plus, street cred dramas basking in drugs and gangs tend to capitalize on the gritty, realistic aspects of confrontational entertainment. Additionally, what are the chances that supplying your superhero spectacle with macabre edginess drenched in hard knocks with an ethnic twist would find some kind of distinctive appeal? It can be accomplished if one looks at the recent success of another ethnocentric superhero flick that took the cinema scene by storm in the 2018 Oscar-nominated Black Panther. Well, co-writer/director Ben Hernandez Bray's El Chicano looks to be an unconventional kind of action adventure Latino superhero flick that combines the aforementioned components mentioned above. As inventive and...

Joe Carnahan has deleted his Twitter account after lashing out at a film critic who gave the new film “El Chicano” a mixed review. Carnahan produced the superhero movie and co-wrote the script with first-time director Ben Hernandez Bray. Film critic Carlos Aguilar reviewed “El Chicano” for the Los Angeles Times, calling the film “solidly acted” and a “technically accomplished spectacle” despite a troubling script that creates “separation between Mexican Americans and Mexican nationals, presented only as demonized, criminal, carnage-friendly, nationalist invaders.”
Aguilar submitted his review to Rotten Tomatoes as a positive one, but his criticisms clearly rubbed Carnahan the wrong way as the filmmaker used Twitter to attack the critic. Carnahan responded to Aguilar’s tweet about the review by saying, “You suck as a writer.”
“This motherfucker is proof that the days of Pauline Kael, Roger Ebert, and Andrew Sarris are dead,” Carnahan wrote about Aguilar in a now-deleted post.

“El Chicano” opens deep in the heart of East Los Angeles — or East Los, if you’re local — as a group of Latinx kids watches an act of vigilante justice in their neighborhood. A masked figure frightens off most of the gang members by making the sound of a cucuy — a boogyman — and striking his target with a deadly Aztec sword before disappearing into the night.
Twenty years later, it’s still in their memories. Diego has grown up to become a handsome Lapd cop with a promising career ahead of him. His superior, Captain Gomez (George Lopez), seems especially fond of Diego and tries to help him get a leg up on solving a few career-making cases. Diego’s boyhood friend now goes by the name of Shotgun and has since gotten wrapped up with the Mexican cartel. It’s the same doomed path that claimed Diego’s twin brother,...

A cop thriller promoted as the first Latino superhero movie, “El Chicano” would seem to be arriving at the right time, with “Avengers: Endgame” having made the genre appear fail-proof and “Black Panther” recently proving that an ethnocentric tilt is among the paths to success. But Ben Hernandez Bray’s long-aborning debut feature, co-written with producer Joe Carnahan, turns out to be a pretty weak kickoff to a would-be franchise. It’s hardly fair to expect the production values of those top-shelf major studio efforts, but the problem here isn’t the fairly apparent budgetary limits — it’s the limitations of style and imagination.
Launching on 600 screens nationwide, “El Chicano” isn’t much distinguished by the fact that our less-than-super police hero sometimes wears an identity-hiding mask. Nevertheless, if the box office cooperates, the boilerplate origin story could at least lead to sequels that hopefully take greater risks and demonstrate more personality.

Now that Kara has successfully made sure that her adoptive sister, Alex, remains among the living for the foreseeable future, she’s once again ready to embark on adventures that are a little more science fiction in nature. And should next week’s episode of Supergirl, “City of Lost Children,” live up to its trailer, we’ll get just that.
With only three episodes remaining this season, it looks as though Rhea is beginning the first phases of whatever her endgame may be. Whether General Zod factors into her plans remains to be seen, as we all know that Kryptonians and Daxamites aren’t exactly on the best of terms, but we could very well be looking at an “enemy of my enemy” scenario.

With just a handful of chapters left in each series before they wrap up for the year, big things are on the way for our beloved heroes, something which is evident from each of the synopses below.
For starters, we have Supergirl. In “City of Lost Children,” James Olsen’s Guardians will take centre stage as he steps up to help save National City alongside Kara.
When an alien attacks National City, Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) and the Deo learn the alien is a Phorian, an otherwise peaceful race with telekinetic powers. Guardian (Mehcad Brooks) gets a lead on the Phorian’s address but instead of finding the culprit, he finds a very scared boy named Marcus (guest star Lonnie Chavis). Marcus will only trust James so it is...

It’s not often that Oliver Queen and his cohorts venture overseas, so it goes without saying that we should all tune in for tonight’s episode of Arrow, “Bratva.” And if you’ve been following the series to this point, you know from that title we’re going to be seeing the titular hero’s past exploits with the Russian mafia come home to roost.
In the newly released sneak peek, we join Team Arrow 2.0 as they settle into their temporary digs after Oliver has apparently taken a punch to the face, probably courtesy of his old pal Anatoly. But what’s particularly exciting to see is that Dinah Drake, the new Black Canary, is already taking part in the action. Now begins the countdown to seeing her in full costume.

Sneak Peek footage, images and synopsis fom the "Arrow" episode "Bratva", written by Oscar Balderrama, Emilio Ortega Aldrich and directed by Ben Bray, airing February 8, 2017:
"...a mission takes 'Oliver' (Stephen Amell), 'Felicity' (Emily Bett Rickards) and team to Russia where they meet up with Oliver's old friend, 'Anatoly' (David Nykl).
"Meanwhile, fresh out of rehab, 'Lance' (Paul Blackthorne) returns to the mayor's office ready to get back to work. However, when 'Susan' (Carly Pope) asks for an interview with Lance to discuss his addiction, he balks and it's up to 'Rene' (Rick Gonzalez) to help keep things on track..."

It’s not too often that Oliver Queen does some globe hopping outside of flashbacks, but when he does, odds are that something important will happen. As such, it’s highly recommended that you don’t miss next week’s episode of Arrow, which is naturally titled “Bratva.”
Now that Tina Boland has been revealed to be, in fact, Dinah Drake and is set to become the next Black Canary, she joins the gang as they head to the other side of the world and wastes no time getting in on the action. Aside from that, I’m interested to see if indeed Oliver’s alliance with Anatoly will become strained and if the latter will ever become KGBeast in this universe.

The CW’s DC TV offerings return next week, but the network has today released the official descriptions for the episodes of Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow and Supergirl which will air the week beginning February 6th. There aren’t too many major reveals here, but each of them sounds pretty fun in their own way.
First up is Supergirl. In an episode titled “The Martian Chronicles,” it sounds like we should expect the Girl of Steel to find herself caught in a crossfire between Martian Manhunter and the White Martians, the villainous alien race who wiped his people (and family) out on Mars.
White Martians Attack The Deo — Armek (guest star Terrell Tilford), a White Martian, descends on National City intent on taking M’gann (guest star Sharon Leal) back to Mars to face her punishment as a traitor. Hank (David Harewood) and Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) determine the...

In one of his best violent performances since 2010’s “The Killer Inside Me,” actor Casey Affleck shows the audience his great acting range in this year’s revenge drama “Out of the Furnace.”
Affleck played an angry, frustrated former Iraqi veteran who turned to illegal bare knuckle fights to cope with his depression and personal problems. As he participated in these fights, his character mysteriously disappeared after a fight and his brother must seek the truth in the Appalachian Mountains.
Latino-Review had an exclusive sit-down interview with Affleck during the press day late last month. We discussed about Christian Bale’s presence on the set, his research on war veterans and his experience in training as a bare knuckle fighter. And for giggles, I’ve even asked up on who will make a better Batman between his brother, Ben Affleck and Bale.
“Out of the Furnace” is currently in theaters.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has revealed its 276-member-strong class of 2013.
The list, published by The Hollywood Reporter, includes actors, cinematographers, designers, directors, documentarians, executives, film editors, makeup artists and hairstylists, "members-at-large," musicians, producers, PR folks, short filmmakers and animators, sound technicians, visual effects artists, and writers.
Jason Bateman, Rosario Dawson, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Milla Jovovich, Lucy Liu, Jennifer Lopez, Emily Mortimer, Sandra Oh, Jason Schwartzman, and Michael Peña are among the roster of actors, while "The Heat" and "Bridesmaids" helmer Paul Feig made the directors' cut.
"We did not change our criteria at all," says Academy president Hawk Koch of this year's larger-than-usual class. "Yes, this year there is a tremendous amount of women, a tremendous amount of people of color, people from all walks of life. This year, we asked the branches to look at everybody who wasn't in the Academy but who deserved to be.

Chicago – Joe Carnahan’s “The Grey” is one of the first great surprises of 2012, a thriller more interested in the inner turmoil of its characters than gratuitous bloodletting. The cynical bait-and-switch of its marketing campaign is easier to forgive considering the superior nature of the actual film. It’s vastly more thoughtful and moving than one would expect.
Of course, moviegoers have every right to be disappointed if they saw “The Grey” solely on the basis of its underwhelming trailer, which showed Liam Neeson strapping broken bottles to his fists in preparation to fight a large wolf with digital features no more convincing than Taylor Lautner’s pack in “Twilight.” If you can get past the fact that no such brawl takes place (at least onscreen), then you will start to appreciate this film on its own merits. Nearly every person I know who had seen the film in theaters...

The Movie: From the very first moments of The Grey, there is a stark realization that the stark bleakness of the film’s setting is directly complimentary to the story being told. The cold, harsh, brutal weather of the northernmost wilderness sets the stage for a tragic journey of survival. Co-written and directed by Joe Carnahan (Smokin’ Aces, The A-team) and written by Ian MacKenzie Jeffers, the film is adapted from Jeffers’ short story entitled “Ghost Walker.”
The Grey, at it’s most primal, is a story of man versus nature, but more specifically man versus beast, as a handful of oil workers who survive a place crash must battle the bitter cold and a relentless and hungry pack of wolves for survival. Led by Ottway, the group of men must comes to terms with each other and their own demons as they witness their own numbers gradually decline by...

Only a handful of women appear on screen in the male-dominated hit The Grey starring Liam Neeson. But what if the movie were remade starring only women? The Grey director Joe Carnahan tells us what the movie would look like if the women were given the task of surviving a plane crash and hungry wolves.

The action thriller stars Liam Neeson, Dermot Mulroney, Frank Grillo (Warrior), Dallas Roberts, Ben Bray, James Badge Dale and Nonso Anozie.
