Back in May of 2017, a couple of weeks before the release of “The Mummy” starring Tom Cruise, Universal revealed its plans for an entire cinematic collective of monster movies under the Dark Universe banner. “The Mummy” was expected to launch the nascent franchise with future installments focused on the Invisible Man (to be played by Johnny Depp), Frankenstein’s monster (with Javier Bardem in that role), and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. But it wasn’t long before the Dark Universe became infamous. “The Mummy” was a critical flop that audiences in North America rejected and, soon enough, the entire enterprise was scrapped.
Reflecting on the film in an interview with The Playlist’s “Bingeworthy” podcast last week, director Alex Kurtzman called “The Mummy” “the biggest failure of my life.”
“I tend to subscribe to the point of view that you learn nothing from your successes, and you learn everything from your failures,...

On Victorian fantasy series Carnival Row, production designer Frank Walsh was tasked with creating a village for an ancient race of faeries, fleshing out at the same time a sense of their history and culture.
Created by Travis Beacham and René Echevarria, the Amazon drama centers on mythical creatures who have fled their war-torn homeland, gathering as mistreated immigrants within the gritty segment of human society that gives the show its name.
Immersed in the natural world, the Fae flew freely amidst the beautiful, snowcapped mountains of Tirnanoc, prior to their subjugation at the hands of humans. For Walsh, properly establishing this environment was key, in demonstrating the depth and sensitivity of these characters—qualities that set them apart from their urban oppressors. “Because without that,” Walsh says, “I think [the show] was just an odd fantasy set-up.”

In Nick Powell’s Primal, the always entertaining Nicolas Cage stars as Frank Walsh, the movie's ultimate antihero who served in the military and worked at several zoos before becoming a professional hunter. After spending some time in a Brazilian rainforest, Frank thinks he has finally “hit the motherload” because he managed to capture an extremely rare and valuable female white jaguar that should turn him into a rich man. However, once Frank is ready to travel by ship with the white jaguar and several other animals –including a group of monkeys that will get violent if they feel threatened and a couple of venomous snakes– his plan gets completely altered. Some representatives of the U.S. government, including a Navy doctor (Famke Janssen), an attorney who...

Everyone's favourite actor who excels at playing an excitable raving psycho is back in the new action-thriller Primal. Yup, it's Nicholas Cage, a little toned down from his role in Mandy, but still full of the ferocious energy and rage we've come to expect from him and love him for.
In Primal we meet his character, Frank Walsh, in the Amazon jungle. He's a big-game hunter capturing and collecting wild animals to sell to zoos. The opening scene is the first of many "edge-of-your-seat nailbiters" in the film. He's face-to-face with a snarling jaguar and in grave danger of being mangled to shreds before he can get it caged. The rewards for his risk will payoff big time...

“Primal” begins the way that every movie should begin: With a bearded Nicolas Cage sitting in a tree somewhere deep in the Brazilian jungle while smoking a cigar, reading “Real Estate” magazine, and waiting for a rare white jaguar known as “El Fantasma Gato” (“The Ghost Cat”) to emerge from the trees and eat the goat carcass that’s strung up on the ground below. Sadly — if inevitably — this schlocky genre mishmash is all downhill from there, as
The best thing that “Primal” has going for it (beyond its truly incredible poster) is a premise that harkens back to the glory days of dopey ’90s action films — a beautiful time when B-movie directors were high out of their minds on the promise of CGI, and used such digital tools to add new dimensions to otherwise staid ideas. Stephen Sommers’ “Deep Rising” is perhaps the most divine example: Just when you...

“Primal” isn’t just a title that’s been used many times, it’s now a movie that seems to have put several prior movies in a food processor — to results that are edible, but unsurprisingly don’t taste like anything in particular, let alone induce a desire for seconds. This first directorial feature by longtime stunt coordinator Nicholas Powell stars the inescapable Nicolas Cage (in at least his fifth film of the year) as a grumpier Indiana Jones-type adventurer on a boat with dangerous wild animals as well as a world-class terrorist on the loose.
That this mashup of too many familiar action-thriller elements doesn’t emerge a generic mess is a credit to all involved. That it’s passably entertaining but also instantly forgettable comes as less of a surprise.

But Primal does, Cage's new film with Famke Janssen and Kevin Durand.
From Outcast director Nick Powell Primal now has its very first trailer.

Benedict Cumberbatch is one busy guy. As well as currently holding roles in Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War and its sequel, he’s also set to feature in two more TV productions – Patrick Melrose and The Child in Time – as well as a couple of voice roles in Jungle Book and How The Grinch Stole Christmas. That’s not to mention the films that he has due out this year: The Current War and Thor: Ragnarok.
But, even with all of that on his plate, the actor is still taking on more work. Case in point: Variety is reporting today that Cumberbatch has signed on for Gypsy Boy, an adaptation of Mikey Walsh’s memoirs, which will see him playing Frank Walsh, “a demanding father and a member of the last generation of the Romany Gypsy people, known for their ability to fight.” To the Walsh clan, boxing is a...

It’s been in theatres for just one week, but the post-mortem on The Mummy has already begun. Having arrived with almost entirely negative reviews, the big budget franchise opener from Universal has greatly underperformed at the box office – prompting many to ask where the finger of blame should be pointed. Somewhat unusually, comments are now being made by people involved with the film, laying the responsibility at the door of both the studio, and the star – Tom Cruise.
According to Variety, Cruise took control of every aspect of the production – even going so far as to bring in writers to perform a script overhaul that expanded his leading role, and bringing his regular editor, Andrew Mondshein, into the post-production process while he oversaw the cutting of the final movie. While Universal has praised the “commitment and dedication” of Tom Cruise, it is, perhaps, the comments of Supervising Art Director...
