If you rememer, we on Fiction Horizon have written a lot about Furiosa and its result at the box office. We have reported that George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga managed to win the Memorial Day weekend box office ahead of The Garfield Movie, but the overall result was disappointing and based on the current numbers, which we have also reported on, the movie is unlikely to break even, which is somewhat strange. Namely, as we have reported, everyone is praising Furiosa, and we know that the studio is proud of the project, it hasn’t drawn a lot of people to cinemas, which is why these disppointing box office results seem strange.
We have also reported that the future of the Mad Max franchise might depend on the financial success of Furiosa, but while it has not been confirmed, Tom Hardy, who played Max Rockatansky in Fury Road,...

Jeff Nichols’ The Bikeriders is throwback filmmaking at its finest, so much so that Jodie Comer’s signature accent work essentially serves as one of the film’s primary special effects. The crime drama, which is a mostly fictionalized take on Danny Lyon’s seminal 1968 photojournalistic book of the same name, chronicles the rise and fall of a Chicago outlaw motorcycle club. Framed through a series of interviews with a fictionalized Danny Lyon (Mike Faist), Comer’s character, Kathy, recounts the story of how she became the protective wife of Benny (Austin Butler) and why she went to great lengths to shield him from the club leader’s (Tom Hardy’s Johnny) attempts to have Benny succeed him.

Le sigh… It’s been a terrible year for movies at the box office and audiences just haven’t been coming out for good movies. One of them neglected by the moviegoing public is George Miller’s “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” the prequel movie to “Mad Max Fury Road” starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth (read our review).

George Miller’s Mad Max Saga has been a long-standing franchise, which he started back in 1979 with Mad Max. The movie starred Mel Gibson in the lead role, and continued for two more movies till 1985. Then Tom Hardy came into the picture with the Mad Max reboot in 2015, which became a box office hit worldwide. But instead of continuing on its success, Miller decided to do a prequel movie with Anya Taylor-Joy as Furiosa.

In Mad Max: Fury Road, Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron came together as Max and Furiosa to deliver a blockbuster. Unfortunately, Miller was unable to recreate the same magic with Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, starring Taylor-Joy in the lead. And with the mediocre response of the latest movie, things are not looking too good for the franchise, which had plans to continue after the prequel movie.

In an early scene of Mad Max: Fury Road, the warrior called Furiosa (Charlize Theron in that film) stands in a shadowless patch of barren desert alongside several women who have been sheltered from the heat, if not misery, all their lives. One of them laments about a flesh wound she just suffered as they watch their last ride out of the Wasteland vanish into the horizon. “It hurts,” she whispers. “Out here everything hurts,” Furiosa responds. “Now pick up what you can and run.”
Fans and admirers of George Miller’s Mad Max films can probably relate to that feeling these days. In an act that still defies the rules of convention applied to aging artists—and certainly those prescribed by Quentin Tarantino—Miller has labored away at building his beautiful nightmare vision of our post-apocalyptic future for nearly 50 years. And in that time, a case can be made...

Back in 2010, it was reported that director George Miller would be shooting two new entries in his post-apocalyptic Mad Max franchise back-to-back: the sequel Mad Max: Fury Road and a follow-up called Furiosa. But things didn’t work out that way, and making Mad Max: Fury Road on its own proved to quite a struggle – a five month shoot in the deserts of Namibia, with two lead actors (Tom Hardy as Max Rockatansky and Charlize Theron as Imperator Furiosa) who couldn’t stand each other. Miller didn’t let the grueling process put him off making more Mad Max movies, though. Immediately after the release of Mad Max: Fury Road in 2015, Miller announced that he had already written a screenplay and a novella of further stories… and Max himself would return in a film called Mad Max: The Wasteland. But nine years have passed, the Fury Road prequel Furiosa is now in theatres,...

Oh, George Miller, the genius that you are. The 79-year-old Oscar-winning filmmaker has played in multiple genres, giving us plenty of masterpieces and films that pushed the medium forward, from "The Road Warrior" all the way to "Happy Feet." This is, after all, the mad man who gave us "Babe: Pig in the City," arguably the closest predecessor to "Fury Road" — one of the best movies of all time (according to the /Film team).
Now, nearly a decade after welcoming us to Valhalla in "Fury Road," Miller is back in the Wasteland with "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga," an epic tale that follows Imperator Furiosa on a quest for vengeance. As our own Bj Colangelo wrote in her review, "'Furiosa' is somehow bigger, more imaginative, and yes, better, than what came before. George Miller has given us a scorching, rip-roaring, and downright breathtaking odyssey that serves as his finest work yet.

Director George Miller decided to continue the Mad Max franchise with the Mad Max: Fury Road prequel Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga… and while the movie got good reviews (like the 9/10 review from JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray), the box office numbers fell short of the $168 million budget, so it’s clear that the Furiosa story was not something a lot of movie-goers were exceptionally eager to see. At least, they weren’t eager to see it on the big screen. We’ve learned that Furiosa will be receiving a VOD next Tuesday, June 25th, and it’s even available for pre-order on Amazon. Maybe more Mad Max fans will check this one out now that they’ll be able to watch it in the comfort of their own homes.

Computer-generated and visual effects in movies have reached peak saturation over the past couple of decades. Seemingly every other “exterior” scene is shot against a digital background nowadays, and most action sequences look more like flashy video game cutscenes than genuine cinematic moments.
Amid the deluge of CGI sadness, however, there are still filmmakers and stunt people committed to filming action in the purest way, capturing stunts in-camera, on location, and with trained professionals. As much as visual effects have advanced over the years, there’s still nothing better than the real thing, and the movies on this list prove that the art of in-camera stunts is as potent and powerful as ever.
Tom Cruise Hangs on Side of Plane — Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation
A case can be made that Tom Cruise hanging off the side of an A400 Atlas military plane as it takes off is the most iconic modern movie stunt there is.

Hideo Kojima, the innovative creator responsible for renowned video game series such as Metal Gear Solid and Death Stranding, is recognized for his unconventional narrative style and limitless imagination.
Recently, his appreciation for director George Miller, the genius behind the Mad Max universe, peaked with the debut of Miller’s most recent movie, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.
Hideo Kojima’s Growing Admiration for George Miller’s Cinematic Mastery
Game Designer Hideo Kojima is an avid film buff.
Kojima started publicly showing affection for Miller even before Furiosa. After the Mad Max reboot with Tom Hardy came out in 2015, Kojima expressed his appreciation for the film on Twitter, describing it as “a masterpiece that will remain in cinema history.”
This initial praise led to a friendly interaction between the two directors on social media, with Miller acknowledging Kojima’s positive comments.

Despite the emotional turmoil of growing up, it would seem little Riley of the Inside Out flicks is living her best life. She’s certainly bringing a much needed win to Pixar Animation Studios. After what has undeniably been a rough post-covid era for the house of Woody, Buzz, Coco, and so many other beloved animated characters, the return of Amy Poehler’s Joy had no sadness in sight when Inside Out 2 opened to $155 million this past weekend.
Debuting to the second best animated opening day of all-time with $62 million—behind only another Pixar sequel, 2018’s Incredibles 2—the film went on to gross the second best weekend ever in animation, again behind Pixar’s Brad Bird-directed superhero sequel. This debut is also above last year’s animated juggernaut, The Super Mario Bros. Movie. It’s in fact the best opening of any movie since Barbie last July.

Not so long ago, it was in late May, we reported that George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga managed to win the Memorial Day weekend box office ahead of The Garfield Movie, but that the overall results were disappointing and that the whole weekend was the worst in 30 years, as far as the box office is concerned. We know that Furiosa has been praised by both fans and critics, but the box office numbers aren’t even close to justifying these praises and the movie is struggling to earn money in theaters.
This was recently evidenced by the fact that the movie was removed from almost 1,000 US theaters, and while the movie did earn something in theaters, many are wondering if the movie will ultimately be declared a flop, as far as the financial side of the deal is concerned, or not. We at Fiction Horizon have the numbers and answers for you.

Chris Hemsworth found it "somewhat liberating and refreshing" to ditch the "heroic Thor space" and play a villain in 'Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga'.The 40-year-old actor has starred as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since the 2011 film of the same name and reprised the role in several subsequent movies, but he was grateful to step away from playing a hero to star as Dementus, the warlord leader of the Biker Horde, which abducted Furiosa, and eventual ruler of Gastown, in George Miller's fifth instalment in the blockbuster post-apocalyptic action franchise.Speaking to SFX magazine, he said: "It was somewhat liberating and refreshing to kind of shed the heroic Thor space and transform into something different, and not have to be restricted by the expectations of the hero, guess. The first time I read the script, I felt a huge amount of creative impulses and ideas bubbling up,...

George Miller’s Furiosa may be struggling in cinemas, but that doesn’t mean it won’t ultimately make money for Warner Bros. A few thoughts on the modern approach to box office reporting:
There’s a sense of ‘here we again’, as headlines emerge about George Miller’s latest movie, Furiosa.
Off the back of terrific reviews, the fifth film in the Mad Max saga arrived in cinemas with the promise of a sixth movie – The Borderlands – ready to go. George Miller said as much in his collection of pre-release interviews, the assumption being that Warner Bros would fire the starting gun should Furiosa’s box office receipts be solid enough.
Yet, as you likely know, the numbers aren’t looking good. The chances of Mad Max 6 are beginning to look incredibly slim.

Actor Tom Hardy once picked up where Mel Gibson left off by starring in 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road. But he once revealed there might’ve been more Mad Max sequels in his future.

Hardy had been attached to Mad Max for a number of years before it officially hit theaters. The actor confided that he couldn’t have been more excited to be a part of the franchise. Although he admitted there was a lot of pressure in doing the movie, and inheriting the role that helped make Gibson famous.
“There were many, many actors that would probably be right for Mad Max and there’s many out there who could probably do an exceptional job to portray him. It’s especially a challenge to step in the shoes of such an iconic character. I...

"The problem with dialogue is that it tends to slow things down," director George Miller said, in a recent interview with The Telegraph. "Film is a medium often best enjoyed at high speed."
Few films move at a higher speed than Miller's "Mad Max" series, which came tearing back into town after a 30-year break with "Mad Max: Fury Road" and revved its engines again this year for "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga." The movies are set in a post-apocalyptic Wasteland that was created by devastating wars over dwindling resources. Somewhere in the middle of all those wars, people decided to take their anger out on books, resulting in mass book burnings that left the remains of human civilization with a paucity of vocabulary. The old words are carefully preserved by the History Men, who tattoo them on their skin. Meanwhile, the denizens of the Wasteland concoct new phrases...

In 2015, George Miller shocked Hollywood when he reignited the Mad Max franchise with Mad Max: Fury Road. After two decades away from the franchise, many were skeptical how the universe would work in today’s age – but Miller delivered and brought forth one of the finest action movies of all time. In 2024, he further expanded upon his universe by exploring the origin story of Furiosa. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is a sprawling epic that charts the childhood of Furiosa (Anya Taylor-Joy) as she is taken from her homeland. Desperate to get back home, as she ages, she...

The box office is not being kind to Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga as the numbers are not so encouraging for this Chris Hemsworth and Anya Taylor Joy-led dystopian movie. Even though the film has excellent visuals and Hemsworth gave one of his best performances, it did not liven up the summer box office. Keep scrolling for more.

Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy’s differences on the set of Mad Max: Fury Road have become common knowledge now. Although both have sorted out their differences and accepted where they were wrong, the whispers of what went down on the sets of the film continue to be brought up to date.

Chris Hemsworth is having a resurgence after his days as Thor in the MCU. The actor was recently seen in George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga as the antagonist Dementus. Hemsworth’s performance as the unhinged warlord in a post-apocalyptic wasteland was universally acclaimed, and many considered it to be the best part of the film.
Hemsworth’s next release of the year will be his animation debut, Transformers: One. The animated film will feature the actor as a younger Optimus Prime, i.e., Orion Pax, along with actors such as Scarlett Johansson, Brian Tyree Henry, Steve Buscemi, and Keegan Michael-Key. The film’s premiere at the Annecy Animation International Film Festival was reportedly received with fanfare.

"I consider myself, I call it, a 'full contact composer.' I'm not a guy that sits behind a piano with a piece of paper..." Now playing in theaters worldwide is the newest awesome George Miller post-apocalyptic action movie - Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. The movie kicks ass and so does its score. Just like with Mad Max: Fury Road, Furiosa features a score composed by Dutch musician Tom Holkenborg. Before getting into composing scores for movies, Holkenborg went under the moniker "Junkie Xl" and was a techno DJ and producer crafting electronica remixes and tracks galore. After achieving mega fame as Junkie Xl, he moved into composing - one of his first scores is for the video game movie Doa: Dead or Alive (2006). He later composed the scores for the sequels 300: Rise of an Empire (2014) and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014), before being hired by George Miller...

Will Smith has starred in the biggest blockbusters in Hollywood as well as character-driven dramas that have shown his range as an actor. The actor has also worked with some of the most talented actors in the industry who have influenced him as well as inspired the young lot of performers who came after him.
Will Smith as Robert Neville in I Am Legend | Warner Bros. Pictures
One of Smith’s most popular films was the post-apocalyptic thriller I Am Legend where he played Robert Neville. Much of the film saw the actor sharing screen space with his companion canine named Sam. Smith was in awe of Sam’s intelligence and grew emotionally connected with her, so much so that he even tried to adopt her.

Despite big stars such as Henry Cavill and Ryan Gosling having blockbuster releases this year, the first half of 2024 seems to be a lackluster year for Hollywood. The industry has seen many sure-shot films bomb at the box office this year. While Dune: Part Two remains the highest-grossing film of the year, it was released in March.
Films such as The Fall Guy and The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, which were touted to be huge hits have all taken a huge loss at the box office, making studios reconsider their strategies. Making it worse is the success of small-budget films such as Tarot, which has become the year’s most profitable film with a $45 million box office against an $8 million budget.

Warner Bros.’ Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and A24’s Civil War have both gotten off to a slow start at China’s box office. Furiosa, the first movie of George Miller’s Mad Max saga to be released theatrically in China, opened in sixth place with $3.7 million over the country’s Dragon Boat Festival holiday weekend as a batch of local releases dominated ticket sales. Alex Garland’s Civil War, meanwhile, debuted to just $2.4 million for eighth place, according to data from consultancy Artisan Gateway.
Civil War, made for about $50 million, was already an international hit with $69 million in total ticket revenue in North America and $114 million worldwide. But Miller’s Furiosa certainly could have used a bigger boost from China, as its $144 million total at the global box offices still lags behind its hefty $168 million production budget. Chinese ticketing app Maoyan forecasts Furiosa to finish its run with...

Will Smith’s latest action film Bad Boys: Ride or Die seems to have hit it big at the box office. The fourth installment of the action film franchise which made Smith a star reportedly had a great opening weekend of $104 million at the international box office. The film also starred Martin Lawrence, Vanessa Hudgens, and Eric Dane in lead roles.
The film is Smith’s first release since 2022’s Emancipation, which was on the heels of the infamous slap at the 2022 Oscars. Will Smith was banned from attending the ceremony and he even resigned from the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences. However, Bad Boys: Ride or Die’s box office performance implies that the slap was not as big of a career-ender.

The first full weekend of June brought a modicum of hope to the summer box office, as Will Smith and Martin Lawrence reunited for the fourth installment of their popular “Bad Boys” action-comedy franchise. Read on for the weekend box office report.
“Bad Boys: Ride or Die” had been planned since 2020’s “Bad Boys for Life” became the highest-grossing blockbuster that year, partially due to Covid shutting down theaters a few weeks after its release. Opening in 3,885 theaters, including IMAX and other premium screens, “Ride or Die” received mixed reviews with 64% on Rotten Tomatoes, although it was expected to be fairly review-proof with the popularity of its two stars. It ended up making $5.88 million in Thursday previews beginning at 3pm, and $21.6 million on Friday, including those previews.
Sony is estimating it to make $56 million in North America its opening weekend, which is less than the previous movie’s $62.5 million holiday opening,...

Speculations swirled about Mel Gibson’s return to the Mad Max saga, particularly with rumors suggesting Furiosa might entice his comeback, but these hopes were dashed soon after the audience saw the movie.
Despite Mad Max: Fury Road revitalizing the franchise, Gibson wasn’t tapped to reprise his role as Max Rockatansky, instead, Tom Hardy took the reins, while Charlize Theron played Imperator Furiosa.

George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga returned to the wasteland and the grungy dystopian environment fans loved in 2015’s Fury Road. Alyla Browne and Anya Taylor-Joy took over the role of young Furiosa from Charlize Theron and the film explores her origins and adventures over 15-20 years.

Anya Taylor-Joy has won great acclaim from fans of the Mad Max franchise for her portrayal of Furiosa in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road. Taylor-Joy had some big shoes to fill, as Academy Award winner Charlize Theron played the older Furiosa in Fury Road. However, audiences have embraced her take on the iconic role. Taylor-Joy said taking on the role was exciting and that she dedicated herself to training, noting the support of director/writer George Miller. As Dementus put it, hate is “one of the greatest forces of nature.” But he did miss just how closely hope can be tied to it – and George Miller has displayed this in a pretty incredible way, casting a bullied teen in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. If you remember, Quaden Bayles appeared in a heartbreaking viral video back in 2020, expressing how hurt and despondent he was over being teased for his dwarfism. But now you can see him as War Pup (master of the Bommy Knocker) in Furiosa, showing that hope should always win out over hate.
Alongside Quaden Bayles, George Miller also cast Sean Millis, a singer with Hunter’s Syndrome, in Furiosa. Millis, like far too many, was also bullied online for his looks, with rather disgusting comments hurled at him over his appearance. Fortunately, people like Miller continued to stand up for him, with even Furiosa...

Forty-five years after George Miller first brought audiences into the world of Mad Max, the latest installment, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, has set a new milestone for the franchise. Despite its lukewarm box office performance, the film has achieved an impressive 90 percent positive audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Box Office Performance Causes Concern The film’s financial performance has not been as stellar. Opening with $32 million domestically and $36.5 million overseas during the four-day Memorial Day weekend, it fell short of expectations and raised doubts about the future of another potential Mad Max project, The Wasteland. Forty-five years after George Miller introduced audiences to Mad Max, the auteur faces a potential new challenge in his storied career. The revered filmmaker’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga debuted with a modest $32 million domestically over the Memorial Day weekend and an additional $36.5 million overseas. This performance well below expectations casts doubt on Mad Max: The Wasteland, another installment Miller has been developing for years. Nico Lathouris and George Miller penned both The Wasteland and Furiosa during the making of the 2015 blockbuster Mad Max: Fury Road. That film, recognized as an awards season juggernaut, snagged six Oscars...

Mad Max franchise mastermind George Miller recently brought us a new addition to the series with the release of the Mad Max: Fury Road prequel Furiosa (read our review Here) – and while that movie struggles to draw in viewers during its theatrical run, we have decided to take a look back at the first Mad Max sequel, the 1981 classic The Road Warrior (watch it Here). You can hear all about it in the embed above!
Directed by Miller from a screenplay he crafted with Terry Hayes and Brian Hannant, The Road Warrior – which is also known as Mad Max 2 outside of the United States – has the following synopsis: After avenging the death of his wife and young son at the hands of a vicious gang leader, Max drives the post-apocalyptic highways of the Australian outback, fending off attacks from nomadic tribes that prey on outsiders. Falling into an encampment...

Thanks to photorealistic tech advancements, George Miller evolved his approach to VFX on the “Mad Max” franchise in the nine years since “Fury Road.” Which is why he was much more comfortable using CG in post on “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.” His thrilling stunt-driven chase sequences were shot in-camera with as many practical effects as possible, but CG enabled him to achieve greater dynamic energy while enhancing his stylized world-building.
Back from “Fury Road” was production VFX supervisor Andrew Jackson of Dneg, who was eager to play with a bigger digital toolbox. This not only encompassed more realistic fire, water, dust, and smoke but also allowed the VFX team to extend the Wasteland desert landscape and skies and embellish the newly created Gas Town and Bullet Town environments. Plus, they were able to replace or augment the iconic vehicles (especially the multitude of motorcycles) for the action set pieces.

With the underwhelming box office of the latest film in the decade spanning Mad Max franchise, Furiosa, there may be no more of these wonderful, experimental, and auteur-driven action films made. That is a shame. But we can dream. As did this anonymous artist-designer who reimagined what the O.G. vehicle stunt spectacular auteur, Buster Keaton, might have made in the 1920s. Either way, it is pretty clear Silent-Era cinema masterpiece, The General, was a major influence on the Max Max franchise; particularly so as George Miller leaned more and more into vehicular...

Forty-five years after George Miller introduced audiences to Mad Max, the filmmaker may have hit a rough patch in the postapocalyptic wasteland unless he finds some high-octane gasoline soon. George Miller, renowned for bringing the post-apocalyptic world of Mad Max: Fury Road to life, is back with Furiosa. This prequel explores the origins of Imperator Furiosa, famously portrayed by Charlize Theron. In the new film, Anya Taylor-Joy steps into the role, a decision rooted in Miller’s choice to avoid de-aging technology. Chris Hemsworth plays the warlord in the upcoming Furiosa film. While fans eagerly anticipate Taylor-Joy’s performance, many are excited about a rumored Mad Max cameo. This brief appearance by Max Rockatansky heightens expectations for those hoping to see Tom Hardy reprising his role. Nonetheless, Furiosa stands strong as...

With legacy sequels being all the rage in Hollywood, it’s within reason to imagine that perhaps a world exists where George Miller asks Mel Gibson to return for a new ‘Mad Max’ film in the future. If “Ghostbusters” can do it, so can ‘Mad Max.’ Well, there’s one problem, though–George Miller hasn’t thought about what an elderly Max would be like.

It's easy to blame spin-offs for trying to cash in on popular franchises. The worst of them rely too much on what came before and offer nothing of their own. But the best of them find an unusual perspective, create new circumstances for familiar characters, or invent new characters for a familiar universe.
The writers of Young Sheldon deliberately avoided trying to replicate the style of their predecessor, instead offering a warm, nostalgic show about a child prodigy who is not always understood by those around him.
George Sr. Had Been Young Sheldon's Biggest Problem All Along
However, one fan complaint has lived with this undoubtedly outstanding series for all seven seasons – the personality of Sheldon's father, George Sr.
In the early seasons of The Big Bang Theory, Sheldon Cooper regularly mentioned the difficult trials that befell him in his childhood. There are also numerous references to Sheldon's father being a drinker.
