When you’re reading a good book, you can picture it in your mind. And the same goes for cinematographers when they read a script. “It’s inevitable that you imagine things as you read the script,” M. David Mullen (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”) tells Gold Derby at our Meet the Experts: Cinematography roundtable with fellow Emmy nominees Christian Sprenger (“Atlanta”), Igor Martinovic (“George and Tammy”), Anastas N. Michos (“Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities”), Sean Porter (“The Old Man”) and Jon Joffin (“Schmigadoon!”).

Mullen tries hard not to visualize the script if he has not met with the director yet. “You want to talk to the director and get a sense of their vision first before you’re too far on the wrong track,” he says. “I...

“Elvis” director of photography Mandy Walker won Feature Film at the ASC Awards March 5, when the American Society of Cinematographers handed out its honors at the 37th annual awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
Walker’s win in the feature film category could prove prescient; 17 out of the last 36 years found the ASC film winner winning the Academy Award. But it’s worth noting that Oscar nominees “Tár” and “All Quiet on the Western Front” were not among the ASC nominees.
In the TV categories, “The Old Man” took awards for Motion Picture, Limited Series, or Pilot Made for Television and Episode of a One-Hour Television Series – Commercial, while “Barry” won Episode of a Half-Hour Television Series for its Season 3 finale and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” won Episode of a One-Hour Television Series – Non-Commercial for its Season 4 finale.

Elvis cinematographer Mandy Walker cracked a glass ceiling on Sunday, becoming the first woman to win the American Society of Cinematographers Award in the feature competition during the 37th ASC Awards.
The crowd at the Beverly Hilton’s International Ballroom erupted with applause and gave Walker a lengthy standing ovation as her name was called.
“This is for all the women that win this award after me,” she said to enthusiastic applause, and she looked for to more women breaking more glass ceilings. “Thijs is an inclusive, representative community,” she said, adding, “I didn’t cry, I thought I was going to cry.”
She thanked Elvis director Baz Luhrmann for allowing her to “create magic with him;” Catherine Martin for her “support and inspiration; and her crew for “dancing with the camera and flying with the camera” during Austin Butler’s performance as Elvis.

Mandy Walker has won the American Society of Cinematographers feature-film award for “Elvis,” making her the first woman ever to win that award. She is only the third female nominee in the category, after Rachel Morrison for “Mudbound” in 2018 and Ari Wegner for “The Power of the Dog” last year.
Walker now has the chance to become the first woman to win the Oscar for cinematography, where she is also the third female nominee in the gender-neutral Oscars category that took the longest to nominate a woman. Her competitors at the Oscars include two who were also nominated by the ASC, Roger Deakins for “Empire of Light” and Darius Khondji for “Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truth,” along with James Friend for “All Quiet on the Western Front” and Florian Hoffmeister for “Tar.”

The cinematographers of “The Batman,” “Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths,” “Elvis,” “Empire of Light” and “Top Gun: Maverick” have received nominations from the American Society of Cinematographers, the ASC announced on Monday.
Last year’s winner, “Dune” cinematographer Greig Fraser, was nominated again for “The Batman.” Darius Khondji received the nomination for “Bardo,” Claudio Miranda for “Top Gun,” Mandy Walker for “Elvis” and cinematography legend Roger Deakins received his record 17th ASC nomination for “Empire of Light.”
The nomination makes “Elvis” cinematographer Mandy Walker only the third woman to be nominated in the top feature-film category by the ASC, after Rachel Morrison for “Black Panther” and Ari Wegner for “The Power of the Dog.” No female cinematographer has ever won in the category.

Roger Deakins (“Empire of Light”), Greig Fraser (“The Batman”), Darius Khondji, Claudio Miranda (“Top Gun: Maverick”), and Mandy Walker (“Elvis”) were nominated Monday for the 37th annual ASC Awards (to be held March 5 at the Beverly Hilton and live streamed).
For the legendary Deakins, who finds himself in the underdog position for exquisitely lensing Sam Mendes’ underappreciated ode to cinema, this marks his ASC-leading 17th nomination. The two-time Oscar winner (“1917” and “Blade Runner 2049”) has won five times, tied with Emmanuel “Chivo” Lubezki, the three-time Oscar winner, who didn’t make the cut for “Amsterdam,” which never got any critical traction. Fraser, last year’s Oscar and ASC winner for “Dune,” has two wins and three noms. For Matt Reeves’ “The Batman,” he provided a gritty noir look. Mandy Walker’s bold lensing of Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis made her the third woman to ever be nominated in the feature category of the American Society of Cinematographers’ ASC Awards, which announced it nominations on Monday.
The feature nominees in the competitive 37th ASC Awards race are Walker; Roger Deakins for Empire of Light; Greig Fraser for The Batman; Darius Khondji for Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths; and Claudio Miranda for Top Gun: Maverick.
Walker is now in a select group of just three women who have been nominated in the ASC feature competition. Rachel Morrison was nominated in 2018 for Mudbound, followed by Ari Wegner, who was nominated in 2022 for The Power of the Dog. Morrison and Wegner both went on to earn historic Oscar nominations.
With his work on Sam Mendes’ drama Empire of Light, Deakins extends his record number of ASC feature nominations to a remarkable 17 noms.

[Editor’s Note: The following interview contains spoilers for “Guillermo Del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities” Episode 3, “The Autopsy.”]
A little while ago, director David Prior got an unexpected gift. A package showed up in the mail. Inside was a tiny figurine of a bearded man.
“I got it in the mail before I even knew what it was. I thought, ‘Oh, that’s nice. A little souvenir. Did Guillermo whittle this himself?’” Prior said. “I assumed it was Dr. Winters when I got it.”
Dr. Winters is the main character in “The Autopsy,” the episode of the Netflix series “Guillermo Del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities” that Prior directed. In this version of Michael Shea’s short story, adapted with the help of screenwriter David S. Goyer, Winters is called on to help an investigation into what local police believe is a tragic mining explosion. By the time he gets a chance to examine the bodies pulled from the wreckage,...

The Movie: "Death to Smoochy"
Where you can stream it: Free with ads on YouTube
The pitch: Kids' show host Rainbow Randolph (Robin Williams) finds himself going from the high life to the gutters after he's caught taking bribes from parents to get their kids on his show. It turns out that children's television is rife with criminal activity, and the studio, Kidnet, needs to replace Randolph with someone truly squeaky clean. Enter Sheldon Mopes (Edward Norton), a vegetarian bleeding heart who dresses up as Smoochy the Rhino and performs at bar mitzvahs and the Coney Island Methadone Clinic.
Producer Nora Wells (Catherine Keener) hires Smoochy and helps him become Kidnet's biggest star, but there are a few problems: she both loathes and lusts after Sheldon, his idealism ends up taking a big bite out of Kidnet's bottom line, and Randolph's out for revenge. In fact, after a few failed attempts at humiliating Sheldon,...

During a seminar at EnergaCamerimage Film Festival on Friday, described as “the best event of the festival” by one of the participants, Oscar-winning French cinematographer Philippe Rousselot shared his thoughts on working alongside a camera operator.
“Philosophically, I hate the idea of power, command, obedience. It’s not in my DNA. But when I think of my attitude on set, I have to remind myself that I have been very dictatorial, almost tyrannical. This contradiction is the origin of this conversation,” he said.
Rousselot, who also celebrated a retrospective at the Polish event, shot seven films with operator-turned-cinematographer Anastas N. Michos, including “The People vs. Larry Flynt” and “Interview With the Vampire.”
“I remember being in a confessional with Brad Pitt, and every time they would say ‘cut,’ Philippe kept on asking: ‘Can you see anything?’ ‘Hmm, maybe his right eye.’ What that speaks to is the level of trust...

From its auspicious beginning as a novel written by then-15-year-old author Beth Reekles on the self-publish site Wattpad, to its wildly popular film debut on Netflix, “The Kissing Booth” has proven itself a hit. It spoke to its target audience without speaking down to them, telling the story of a young woman confronted with the challenge of choosing between a longterm relationship with her male best friend or a budding romance with his hotter older brother. Though its imaginatively named sequel “The Kissing Booth 2” hits similar beats, themes and emotional touchstones, it delivers a few refreshing details by giving the heroine more agency in her quest to find happiness — yet not quite enough to justify its interminable run time.

How did we get here? That’s something I have honestly asked myself nearly every single day over the last two years, and it’s a question that The First Purge poses as well – after three movies centered around the violence that people are willing to perpetuate against each other in the name of “freedom,” just how did all of the madness start in the first place? The answers might seem pretty obvious, but The First Purge director Gerard McMurray delivers up a gritty and sometimes surprising exploration of the genesis of the New Founding Fathers of America and how they managed to get an entire nation to go along with the idea of “The Purge” in the first place.
Writer James DeMonaco (who has been the driving force behind The Purge franchise through all four films) sets this prequel on Staten Island, where the Nffa, who has recently taken over the White House,...

Texas Chainsaw continues the legendary story of the homicidal Sawyer family, picking up where Tobe Hooper’s 1974 horror classic left off. Because there's never enough Danny DeVito in the news, Twentieth Century Fox recently released two of DeVito's films, 1989's "War of the Roses" and 1992's "Hoffa," on Blu-ray. The discs are part of the Fox Home Entertainment "Signature Series," which feature a new video introduction from DeVito and both picture and sound quality that come literally stamped with his approval. (A copy of DeVito's signature is emblazoned on the packaging.)
To celebrate the release, HuffPost Entertainment spoke with DeVito about … well, almost everything. Ahead, DeVito's thoughts on digital filmmaking, his next venture as a director, the fiscal failure of the underrated "Death to Smoochy" and why you should always bring cash to the French Riviera.
What made you want to revisit these films?
When the laser disc came out, I did the same thing: I had this rush about wanting to be on the best delivery system available. I know...

Janie Jones writer/director David M. Rosenthal
In David M. Rosenthal’s latest feature, Janie Jones, we meet Ethan Brand (Alessandro Nivola), a petulant beer-guzzling indie rocker on the verge of being washed-up who is suddenly confronted with a reality beyond sound checks and publishing issues: he is abruptly introduced to the daughter he birthed 13 years prior, Janie Jones (Oscar nominee Abigail Breslin). The introduction is accompanied by abandonment by Janie’s mother (fellow Oscar nominee Elisabeth Shue), a once groupie who is still hooked on that lifestyle’s accessories: mainly drugs and a bad choice in men. What follows is more than a look into the budding relationship between a father and daughter, we see Ethan recognizing his place in the world a little more clearly and a young girl discovering her talent has great value to many people.

Known for his comedic turns in such features as Romancing the Stone and Throw Momma from the Train (among others) and on television for his roles in "Taxi" and the currently airing "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia", it may come as a surprise to some that actor, comedian and Oscar-nominated producer Danny DeVito relishes in cinematic gore with the same vigor as he does laughter.
Speaking with the diminutive-in-size yet statuesque-in-personality DeVito early this March, the sixty-six-year-old actor chatted with Dread regarding his just wrapped Skin Deep, a Splatter Cut short film (as he refers to them) which will serve as the fifteenth entry in his ever-growing library of personally produced and directed horror shorts (which are streamed digitally via his The Blood Factory website.
“I work with John Albo, who has been a friend of mine for many years,” said DeVito of the core creative team behind The Blood Factory.
