The Dragon Ball franchise has amassed a large fanbase over the years and Hollywood had its eye on adapting the popular franchise in live-action. There were a lot of expectations and with the negative track record of manga adaptations on the big screen, it was a big responsibility that 20th Century Fox and director James Wong took with the film.

Twenty years ago this month, the fairy tale-like romantic comedy “13 Going on 30” starring Jennifer Garner made its way into cinemas. The actress played Jenna Rink, a socially awkward soon-to-be 13-year-old who quickly realizes that she “hates being 13.” She makes a birthday wish to be “thirty, flirty and thriving.” With the little help of some wishing dust, she wakes up the next morning to discover that her wish has come true.
It was a defining moment in Garner’s early career. Her role as Sydney Bristow in the television action thriller series “Alias” had made her a breakout star (including at awards shows) just a few years earlier. She won the Golden Globe for Best Drama Actress in 2002 and had competed again in 2003 and earlier in 2004. She had also been nominated for two Emmy Awards one Screen Actors Guild trophy.

Toriyama, like any other Dragon Ball fan, had criticized the 2009 film starring Justin Chatwin and Emmy Rossum, Dragon Ball: Evolution.

In a statement released by Bird Studio, the studio that he founded, they expressed their gratitude to fans who supported his work for over 45 years. Gene Simmons, Sharon Osbourne, and Boy George are among the celebrities who have signed an open letter rejecting a movement to prevent Israel from competing in the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest.
The annual Eurovision song contest welcomes different nations to compete, and includes countries outside of Europe, including Israel and Australia, among others. There have been calls from artists from countries such as Sweden and Finland demanding Israel’s exclusion from the contest due to the latter’s current military action in Gaza.
Last month, a letter was issued on behalf of more than 1,000 Swedish artists — signed by music acts like Robyn, First Aid Kit, and Fever Ray — reading in part, “Allowing Israel’s participation undermines not only the spirit of the competition but the entire public service mission. Fans of Judy Blume’s “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.” had to wait more than 50 years to see the classic children’s novel transferred to the big screen, but their patience was finally rewarded this spring. Written and directed by Kelly Fremon Craig (“The Edge of Seventeen”) and featuring such A-listers as Rachel McAdams and Kathy Bates, the faithful film adaptation boasts an awe-inspiring Rotten Tomatoes critics score of 99% and was even described by its source’s author in a “Today” interview as “better than the book.” As the 2024 movie awards season begins, its best shot at a Golden Globe nomination lies with its 15-year-old star, Abby Ryder Fortson, who would be the fifth youngest contender in the history of her category.
At this point, Fortson is hovering directly outside of Gold Derby’s predicted six-person Best Comedy/Musical Actress lineup with the support of just over a quarter of our oddsmakers.

Sam Esmail is baffled by the desire for adaptations to be faithful to their source material. “That’s not the point,” says the man who brought us Mr. Robot and Homecoming. “The point is, you’re making a great film, and if you’re handcuffing yourself to the source material, you’re going to get into a lot of trouble.”
With Leave the World Behind, Esmail says he was eager to adapt Rumaan Alam’s examination of class and race relations because he knew he could tell a different version of the story for film. He immediately enlisted frequent collaborator Julia Roberts, who stars opposite Ethan Hawke and Mahershala Ali in what is, spoilers aside, a tale of two families as they fight for survival amid an inexplicable blackout. Netflix jumped aboard the apocalyptic thriller and will drop it on the service Dec. 8 after a brief run in theaters. Then,...

Emmy Rossum as Fiona Gallagher For nine seasons, Emmy Rossum captivated audiences as Fiona Gallagher, the resilient and complex heart of Showtime’s Shameless. The story of The Phantom of the Opera has been around since the original novel was written in 1910, but the version we know best came to life in 1986, when Andrew Lloyd Webber transformed the story into a musical. In 2004, Hollywood finally caught up, making a film version of the musical, starring Gerard Butler and Emmy Rossum in the lead roles of The Phantom and Christine, respectively. Prior to starring in the film, Butler had never sang on the screen before, but — as he said at the time of the film’s opening — there was something irresistible about the idea of performing Phantom’s songs. The show had to tie most events to Danny's perspective to keep most things as mysterious as possible. It was more of a weakness than a strength for the first half of The Crowded Room Season 1.
The format, however, paid off on The Crowded Room Season 1 Episode 6 when the story was told from Rya's perspective, focusing a little on her personal life and what was at stake in dealing with Danny's case.
The show introduced her both personally and professionally. She was a mother going through a divorce which didn't do anything to serve the story, even if it felt like a personal touch to give depth to the character.
Her primary shortcoming was her lacking abilities as a mother. She was always focused on getting through the immediate moment to leave for work. If a parent won't spend time with their child, the bare minimum would be ensuring they eat healthily,...

A group of more than 400 actors — including Oscar winners Meryl Streep, Jennifer Lawrence and Rami Malek — are urging SAG-AFTRA leaders to take a harder line as contract talks reach a critical point.
The members sent an internal letter Tuesday to the union’s negotiating committee and the leadership. They emphasized that “we are prepared to strike if it comes to that.”
“And we are concerned by the idea that SAG-AFTRA members may be ready to make sacrifices that leadership is not,” they continued.
The contract expires on Friday, and the leadership has the power to call a strike as soon as Saturday if no agreement is reached.
In the letter, the members urged their negotiators not to settle for anything less than a “transformative deal.”
“This is not a moment to meet in the middle, and it’s not an exaggeration to say that the eyes of history are on all of us,...

Tom Holland made some pretty rare comments about his superstar girlfriend Zendaya.
The English actor, who’s been dating his “Spider-Man” co-star since at least 2021 when news of their romance broke, commented on their relationship in a new interview with BuzzFeed.
When asked what the secret to his rizz — charisma or charm, especially when flirting — is, Holland quipped: “I have no rizz whatsoever, I have limited rizz.

“I need you to fall in love with me, really, for it to work,” he continued, before essentially crediting Zendaya playing his love interest — Michelle “Mj” Jones — as his way of winning over his now-girlfriend. “So, long game. Probably making a movie with each other — it definitely helps when the characters are falling in love with one another, you can sort of blur the lines a little bit.

The first three episodes of Apple TV+’s psychological thriller, The Crowded Room, are finally here and are bound to grip audiences with their intense storytelling and mystery. The 10-episode limited series stars Tom Holland (Spider-Man: No Way Home) as Danny Sullivan, a man who is arrested following his involvement in a shooting in New York City in 1979.
Den of Geek had the opportunity to speak with Holland and Emmy Rossum about their characters’ mother-son relationship, why the show was such a big acting challenge, and what to expect from the rest of the season.
Along with starring in the show, Holland also serves as an executive producer, which he called a “really great privilege.”
“I think why it was so important for me to have the EP credit here was to protect myself,” Holland says. “You know, this is a really, really daunting task, playing this character. It’s TV,...

Spoiler Alert: This review contains spoilers from “The Crowded Room.”
Over 20 years ago, screenwriter Akiva Goldsman penned the script for “A Beautiful Mind,” the Oscar-winning biopic of mathematician and diagnosed schizophrenic John Nash. To convey Nash’s subjective experience of his condition, “A Beautiful Mind” pulled a bait-and-switch. Early in the film, we meet Nash’s college roommate, who becomes his lifelong friend; later, it’s revealed the roommate was a figment of Nash’s imagination. At the time, the twist was effective enough to earn Goldsman an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.
The limited series “The Crowded Room,” created by Goldsman for Apple TV+, attempts the same trick to greatly diminished returns. A simple Wikipedia search shows that “The Crowded Room” was inspired by Billy Milligan, the first defendant acquitted by invoking a case of dissociative identity disorder in the late 1970s. But ahead of the show’s release,...

Perhaps it’s only fitting that I’m of two minds about The Crowded Room on Apple TV+, an ultimately haunting limited series inspired by Daniel Keyes’ The Minds of Billy Milligan. The psychological puzzle begins when troubled youth Danny (a pitch-perfect Tom Holland) is involved in a shooting incident in midtown Manhattan in 1979. It’s clear that Danny has issues: social anxiety at school, an abusive bully of a stepdad (Will Chase), repressed childhood trauma. We learn early on that Danny’s unhappy home life, where he’s unable to protect himself or his unhappily submissive nurse mother (a heartbreaking Emmy Rossum), has led him to move into a neighboring building known by locals as the “ghost house,” where he rooms with the mysterious and alluring Ariana (Sasha Lane) and the brutish Yitzak (Lior Raz). The frustration I have with series creator Akiva Goldsman‘s (A Beautiful Mind) empathetic...

The opening minutes of Apple TV+’s The Crowded Room suggest a thriller.
In 1979 New York, a disturbed young man, Danny (Tom Holland), and his agitated companion, Ariana (Sasha Lane), open fire near Rockefeller Center. When only Thomas is captured — Ariana having disappeared without a trace — the cop in charge of his case (Thomas Sadoski) practically salivates at the idea that they might have nailed a serial killer.
But his colleague, Rya (Amanda Seyfried), isn’t so sure. Over long conversations with Danny, now in prison awaiting his trial date, she begins to weave together a picture of his life — how he got to where he is, why he did what he did. As his truth is revealed, The Crowded Room pivots from gritty crime drama to something altogether sadder and more sentimental, with unfortunately mixed results.
Part of the issue is simply that The Crowded Room, created by Akiva Goldsman,...

Los Angeles, June 6 (Ians) Actors Emmy Rossum and Tom Holland play mother-son in the show ‘The Crowded Room’. The ‘Shameless’ star has talked about being cast in the role while only being 10-years-older than the Spider-Man depicter.
“It makes sense when I read the script,” Rossum told Entertainment Tonight, reports Deadline.
“Candy’s a super young mom, she’s almost a child in her own right when she becomes pregnant at age 16. You watch as I age from 25 to 35, which is actually younger than I am now.”
Rossum is 36 years old while Holland is 27 in real life. One thing that drew Rossum to playing the role of Candy was “the relationship between mother and son and the closeness and everything that they’re grieving in later episodes.”

Emmy Rossum spoke about playing Tom Holland’s mother in “The Crowded Room” during a chat with Et Canada’s Morgan Hoffman.
Rossum is 36 years old in real life, while Holland is 27, meaning there’s just a nine-year age gap.
However, the actress told Hoffman the casting makes sense, sharing: “You know, when I read the script, I was so moved by the mother-son relationship.
“We watch this character, you know, as a really kind of… has this childish energy herself. She’s a young 25-year-old mom with an 8-year-old son, a single mom working two jobs, trying her best to love and protect a child who is full of creativity and imagination, but a little bit different.
“And we watch over time, over 10 years as their relationship erodes. And there’s an incredible poignancy and sadness,” she continued.

Tom Holland put his all into The Crowded Room
The Spider-Man actor recently opened up about balancing — or not balancing — his duties as an executive producer and star in the first installment of the AppleTV+ anthology series.

Tom Holland (Spider-Man: No Way Home) doesn’t look dangerous in the first trailer for Apple TV+’s The Crowded Room, but is his youthful, innocent-looking face just a disguise? That appears to be what Amanda Seyfried’s attempting to figure out in the intense first look at the 10-episode series.

Tom Holland’s mind holds a secret that Amanda Seyfried tries to unlock in the first trailer for The Crowded Room, a new psychological thriller series hitting Apple TV in June.
The 10-episode series focuses on Holland’s Danny Sullivan, who is tied to a series of crimes and shootings in 1979 New York City, even though he has no memory (or “blank spots”) of the incidents. It’s up to Seyfried’s interrogator to solve the mystery before Sullivan is convicted of a crime he potentially (or at least didn’t intentionally) commit.
